Take the solids from your swirl filter and use them in your garden if you have one.

Don't forget that a lot of these crops can be planted in wicking beds as an alternative to back breaking labor of a typical garden.

For me if I did any of those plants it would be a modified thing right. Like if I wanted a fruit tree I would start it in aquaponics so it could grow rapidly then transplant it into soil. For root vegetables i would also do something modified where I would get a barrel filled with media and basically drip it onto that media at intervals so everything could stay well drained but still moist enough for it to grow and get nutrients. Have the barrel be a hanging barrel and definately be an aquaponics system instead of hydroponics. I think it can be done, just just in a different way.

Go back and re-watch this video. Aquaponics is a recirculating system to make it worth doing. How will you do this with fruit trees? The roots need to grow a certain way to take in nutrients from water or soil and the makeup is different to do this. If you start them in straight water, they will have a shock when placed into the ground and may not grow the right root system in time from transplant. Second part to this is starting a tree from seed till it is ready for transplant from a pot of dirt is the same time. So why do this at all in water of Aquaponics. Makes no sense to me why you would want more work or headaches?

Ahhh... so now I understand why potatoes & blurberries are so hit & miss with aquaponics. I swear I've seen farmers get a good batch followed by a dead one. Did not know it was due to the ph needs. Now as far as trees are concerned, the only ones I've seen take up entire media beds and I've often wondered what will limit the root growth. The longer roots grow, the taller the plant grows, right? So if you absolutely must have that apple tree, what happens in three years when those roots overtake the entire media bed? Not saying it can't be done; I just worry about the shock associated with eventually having to transfer the tree to another bed or even the soil....

I hear that nitrifying bacteria can work at low pH (I know of a farmer that does well at 6), especially with a high BSA, if they're given time to adapt (could take over a year, and they can't really handle any changes to the system).

Hello Brooklyn, Love your energy! I was wondering if you could go into the flow rates of a system? I heard you mention that you should aim to turn over the volume of your fish tank once per hour. How does cycling the water more ofter per hour affect the system? some ppl say higher is ok/better. Should one adapt the flow rate to the amount of nitrate in the system shortly after feeding ? Thanks for your educational videos! Whooo Christian

In Australia they are trying papaya but even though they do grow and produce well 1 tree takes up 1 media bed. So what is the case as far as earnings. Several hundred heads of lettuce vs a dozen papaya? Lettuce wins hands down. With the money you save on lettuce you can buy more papaya than you want to eat.

If i was going to plant Fruit and nut trees I would just put them in a big ass pot. And if I was worried about nutrients I always have some earthworm castings going in a bin And put those Nutrients on those trees

Hi Brooklyn my name is Dan im from Australia iv been following your channel for a long time now and im finally ready to start my own aquaponics system I've been collecting bits to start off with including my first green house which is not that big its 4.7m long and 2.5m wide I was wondering if you could give me some advice how to maximize my space I have 3 Ibc tanks and a 1200 liter rectangle shape koi fish tank. To work with. I was hoping to fit floating raft (dwc) and also flood drain gravel grow beds +fish tank +sump +filter system (I think im going with a swirl filter im not a HI class grower yet still a rookie) I will get the pump when I work out how much water I have in the system. Any thoughts or ideas to point me in the right direction would be much appreciated thanks dan praying to the aquaponics god

Awesome video. Here is a question. Why would an Aquaponics System not naturally become more acidic. I have a 3000 to 3500 gallon tank/pond with 100 hybrid bluegill that are about 6 to 7 inches long. My biological filter keeps my Nitrites down to near zero ppm. However my pH floats around 7.4 to 7.6 naturally. The system has been going for about eight months now and still the pH does not want to drop. My only additives to the water are magnesium sulfate and calcium sulfate. And I add those at a ratio to provide a neutral pH adjustment. So basically those additives do not raise or lower the ph. Any ideas?

Great Question! Same here! I have a smaller scale system and I thought maybe it was the top up water. But with a system as large as yours, that theory goes out the window

I think the calcium sulfate might be part of the issue. I use calcium carbonate to help keep my ph stable for my Aquarium. Where do you get your water from? What is the tds of the pond?
@cliff7634
@cliff7634 5 жыл бұрын
Ok First off your fish ratio is 1lb. of fish to 70 gallons. your evaporation and refill cycle with your water you use will hold this PH steady. In a commercial system fish ratio is 0.5lbs. per 1 gallon. So with he proper feeding ratio the PH will come down in time. The time for it to drop will depend on the alkalinity and the PH you start with. your pond will not have the oxygen to sustain a .5lb per gallon ratio without allot of help from you. Look up commercial ponds for fish and see what they have to do to keep o2 in the right areas.

@@TheSchoolofAquaponics Well I disagree with the large fruit trees. If you don't mind the space requirements of course. For the low PH berries you would need a dedicated system that's all.
