I love how yellow guy wants to hold hands when the butterfly says "but maybe I can hold your hand" he reached his hand for it, but the butterfly just flies away, this little detail, which could be unintentional, shows us the hole theme of the episode already. The cult only gives you promises but doesn't really fulfill them. They give you the idea of being loved but dont actually care about you. I just love the show and this episode particulary.

great little spot there, imo this is actually not about cults, but the cult is more a metaphor for people deluded by the idea of love (pessimism incoming, but this series is pessimistic) the idea that a soul mate is guaranteed to you, like the characters say is actually deluded. There is no guarantee you will find your "soulmate" like the characters push. It's a cult of love, people who dedicate themselves fiercely to the idea of love and soulmates and put full FAITH in it, can actually be cult like, which is why they chose to include the cult. Essentially the idea of not finding love can be a seriously hard pill to swallow, so general attitudes in society border on deluded, the story of michael in the cave and the denial of the fact he didnt actually find his soulmate emphasises this.

Not to go all MatPat, but I feel like that's a pretty accurate representation of how most cults will actually try their hardest to _hide_ the fact that they're a cult, at least until they believe they've got you caught hook-line-and-sinker. Very, VERY few people actually go out looking to join a cult on purpose, the vast majority don't realize they're in the process of joining one until much later. So yeah, the whole episode being about love and acceptance and then suddenly changing gears to "oh, and you also gotta worship this dude" seems pretty spot-on. From the accounts I've read from ex-cult members, the realization that they're in a cult was often just as sudden and jarring for them.

I like this part, "I'm hungry" "No, you're lonely" The yellow guy is genuinely just hungry, but the caterpillar disregards that and tells him how he's supposedly actually feeling to help further assimilate the yellow guy into the cult. The caterpillar is creating a problem for the yellow guy as a means for control. I know I'm pointing out the obvious here, I just thought this episode was neat. I haven't finished the series yet though, so maybe it's foreshadowing or something instead. Either way it's a nice subtle commentary on cults. It was also funny in an absurd way.
