Personally I was not interested in a Salesforce Dev career, because world is much larger than that. But after learning few basic things from your Pluralsight course I was able to get some features done in my company. That resulted me working in a team of experienced engineers, learning front-end basics, node.js, dev processes and other different technologies. And pretty soon I will be starting working on my PhD on numerical modelling which is a big deal for me Learning Apex was not the end but the mean and a first step towards something that I've wanted to do but didn't know where to get an experience as a software engineer A big thanks to you, by the way

This video is at times misleading and other times downright wrong. It sounds like when David says “code in Salesforce” he really means the proprietary apex language or the Aura framework. Lightning Web Components are all about writing in industry standard such as JavaScript, CSS, HTML, etc, skills that are instantly transferable outside the Salesforce realm. Another thing David misses is the architect/consultant track for senior people who aren’t cut out for management. This is definitely a place where coding skills come into play when you need to design and guide the solution being developed by those offshore resources. The other factor is that although there are millions of younger or cheaper offshore coders, they lack experience which has resulted in crappy, unusable solutions or completely failed projects. Personally I would advise learning to code for Salesforce, at least to become familiar with the technology as there is a wealth of positions available. I would agree with David that having an alternative for a long-term goal would be advisable. I say this as a 60 year-old Salesforce consultant who worked for Salesforce for five years.

Actually Coding experience increases one's confidence to perform any roles( Design ,Architecture, management and BA e.t.c ). Over a time it helps to solve any kind of IT related problems effortlessly(configuration/coding errors). Especially who are in Juniors/Mid level position , they should also learn to code.

I'm researching Salesforce careers and thought I'd head down the admin path until I realized that the marketing cloud path might suit me better. After watching a couple of videos of yours, I decided to take your career personality test and got the most answers for the developer path which had me like "hmmm...really??" I wasn't sure about that result at all. Watched a couple more videos of yours that talked about the lack of true admin jobs and then watched this one. Honestly, you convinced me NOT to pursue the developer path. Even though I am an introvert and would prefer a role that is not so "people oriented" to quote you, there are certain things you brought up in this video that I think are true. There are certain things I don't want to deal with. I don't think I would be settling if I took an admin job nor would I be settling if I decide to pursue the marketing cloud track because at the end of the day, money isn't everything and if it's a lot of money that I need, there are other possibly more fulfilling ways to get it.

I don't think anything is really a long term career choice these days. We have to constantly evolve our skills and that includes me as well. That said, dev skills are SIGNIFICANTLY more transferable than admin skills.

Well I think the important thing to keep in mind is that coding is a good skill to have (I apply SQL to my Accounting job every day for example), but I would not learn to program if a) A Salesforce is my only goal, B) I have not coded a single line of code before, C) I only do it for the money (because as you said, when the going gets tough...coding can break you mentally), however if you are analytical by nature, and got enough patience, learning to code is a great skills to have that you can apply to many areas. In my case Salesforce was a very attractive option since I have been working in business/accounts for 10 years, and I studied Computer Science to work in the Business Intelligence area, particularly the Data Warehousing area, so I was already one of those boring type of programmers that are only interested in business logic :).

Respectfully the management vs coding and get an mba point is baseless . Product based companies like Google( where you yourself work) earn 100k as starting salary and can be 250 k in a year or two. You can shop anywhere in the planet u want to with that kinda money. Sure with management it may be 270k maybe 300 k even instead of 250 k but it won't be like u don't belong in "big leagues" as a developer. And you're eventually pushed to becoming a manager anyway in like 10 years irrespective of mba degree.

I don’t know if you’ll see this or not but here goes I’m in my early 30s I have two degrees B.S in Criminal Justice and an A.S in Computer Networking. I’m stuck at a job making slightly more than minimum wage and I’m not even full time. I’m depressed and lost. I found out about salesforce two days ago having never heard of it. I have tried coding before but not for long maybe two weeks tops python, JavaScript and I thought it was a lot to learn and I can’t say I was jumping up every morning out of bed to start doing coding it just didn’t grab me initially and now I’m not sure if I should even look at salesforce because coding didn’t grab me the first time. I don’t need a job that makes 100 K a year I just want a job that makes 55kt-75k even if I have to start off at 30k. I just want to do a job that I actually somewhat enjoy and that allows me the freedom to travel at some point in my life and not stay in one place forever. I’m just lost and it is killing me. Sorry for the long comment.

Hey Bryce thanks for reaching out! The good news is pretty much every Salesforce job will get you 60k+ a year. Developers obviously make more (~150k) but there are certainly non coding paths (admin) that'll meet your requirements as well, though their job markets may be more competitive. My advice is to check out the Salesforce personally quiz video on my channel then see from there which Salesforce path might make sense for your personality. Hope this helps!

Thanks! It is possible but depends on your definition of architect. If it's technical architect, the journey is extremely difficult to do without code. Of the 20+ CTAs I know, all are better coders than me. If it's solutions architect, the path is very possible. Good luck!

I am sorry you are looking at this the wrong way. First I have been a development Leader in Tech for the past 30 years. A director at a Fortune 500 company for 20 years, and a CTO for 3 different companies. Yes I am a old man and I am a salesforce consultant. The reason why I am a Salesforce consultant is because of independence and I like to code. In the future you will see the old corporate world go away you will need to learn to stand on your own, and yes you will need to compete with the world. The new order will be a digital nomad the days of being in a company for 20 years are gone, so you will need to get real real fast. So that will be hard and you will have to learn and grow which is ok. I you think you are entitled because you went to college you are wrong in the new world. If you think coding is a art you are wrong it is hard work. Bottom line am I glad I am a coder yes my first language was Cobol Fortran and Assembler. I raised a family and have a good retirement, and I enjoy the work I am doing.

I completely agree with you, but what about the previous video about the admin market shrinking and learning development being the only option? I would rather not code, but it’s almost required with the majority of admin roles.

I'm still trying to wrap my mind and researching to get a better understanding of what salesforce is and what they offer to their clients. So, I'm digging and doing my research. I know they offer cloud. But, I'd like to get a better understanding. Currently, I'm a MERN stack developer. I was considering also learning AWS but then this popped up and I signed up for the veteran's program. But, before I hit the ground running I'm digging and trying to understand them both and trying to get a better feel for the opportunities they each bring etc so that then I could hit the ground running in a direction. I am going to choose the coding route since I enjoy it and have been at it for the last 2 years. Once, I have a better understanding of salesforce, aws etc, I'm sure I'll know which route I want to dive into.

Hello Furqan, I totally get where you’re coming from, I felt the same way. It took me about a year to start my first admin job after getting certified. Make sure your resume is tailored to admin work, look for freelance opportunities and in the meantime use trailhead to keep your skills sharp. Be persistent and don’t give up! Your hard work will pay off!

Careers are long and if you don't enjoy what you do (it at least feel neutral towards it) then I definitely don't recommend it. I'm the Salesforce world you can go down the admin route but it's a pretty saturated market IMO. It's possible but you have to be really strong.

I’ve been binge-watching this channel. This is really good content. I think being able to code at least a little bit is useful for any professional career path. It enables you to build at least simple prototypes, and it enables you to understand what the techies are saying.
