Learn how to play bridge with Marla Lawson: learnbridgeonl...
I called Marla up with a question about bidding about whether we should let the opponents have an easy 2♠ contract or if we should bid even with a very weak hand. Marla advises us not to let the opponents play at the 2-level if they found a fit, so we have to choose between bidding 3♣ hoping for the best with our six clubs, or if we should support partner's diamonds despite having only two.
What would you do?
We found ourselves in the real adventure once we have to try to make our contract... we have five likely losers and no clear way to get rid of them. What should we do?
Sometimes we just need to set off on our adventure and see how things go. This hand was a complete joy to play with a wonderful unexpected result.

Thank you both. In our club, doing this often results in being doubled by the opposition, it a gamble which might work.

With favorable vulnarability, especially when dealer, I'd consider opening 3C here. Pre-empts work.

Using loser on loser (actually establishing a long suit iin order to sluff losers on winners that you know will be trumped) to reduce opponents' trump is a good lesson. In that position I usually would concede the 2 heart tricks and hope the trump suit broke favorably. Thanks for this lesson!

Very very well played, albeit with rather poor defense. I mean, South passed twice and bid clubs, how likely is he to have a top honor in hearts? I am actually still too scared of blocking my suits. I was "screaming" to unblock spades in the second trick, cash the ace of diamonds and surrender a diamond trick, winning the eventual trump return with the ace and just try to ruff a diamond, then ruff a spade and if possible pitch a heart under a diamond. I would have made it, but I think their line is better.

Non-Vulnerable is worth the extra push, Vulnerable becomes a much more of a risk |(especially if doubled)

Only true if their suit is not spades. You never want to let them play 2 Hearts. If either side is vulnerable, it might be better to let them play 2 of a minor if you have no easy way to get to 2 of a major. If their suit is spades and you are vulnerable, you should usually let them play.

poor defence, as soon as declarer plays A and another diamond to set up cross ruff, defenders should play on clubs

Also, at 10:28 East, seeing Declarer sluffing Hearts on Dummy's Diamonds, should lead a Heart - NOT trump, which only puts the lead back in Dummy for a second discard. Very poor play by the EW robots.

If they have a fit, it is not at all certain that we have a fit. Bad mantra.

If they have a 9 card fit we are guaranteed to have an 8 card or better fit somewhere (26 total cards in your hand +partners hand, 4 of which are spades and 22/3>7). If they have an 8 card fit, the only case we don’t have a fit is when we have 5 spades and exactly 7 of each of the other suits between our hands, which sounds fairly unlikely to me, but I’m uninterested in calculating the odds at this moment. The true downside is that the fit may not be easily findable (i.e. maybe it’s a 4-4 fit and both players have 5 card suits they want to bid instead) and could give you a big IMP swing in team games if you get doubled in a bad fit/ a bad break
What should my second bid be with a 6-card club suit? with Graeme Tuffnell
