Good lesson! Defense should make a plan at trick one, just as declarer should.

Interesting... I probably wouldn't have thought to overtake at trick one, especially since declarer was likely void (he wasn't, but). Playing a diamond through declarer does make sense, of course: just not sure I would have made that choice at the table! I'm a little unsure why advancer would make a weak jump response to the overcall, especially with responder passing over the 1H overcall. Yes, it put opener in a tough spot, but it didn't put him off, ultimately. Probably if advancer had passed the overcall (happy to potentially play in 1H, given his weak hand), opener would rebid 3C (showing length and overall hand strength), then pass, pass to advancer, who would bid 3H, then opener 4C, overcaller 4H, and responder 5C to land at the same place? Yes, then you would definitely miss 4H, but even with the weak jump, opponents were determined not to let you play in that contract.
