Thank you for a very insightful and beneficial teaching. After being ostracised from a dharma centre for daring to study books from other lineages and, after careful consideration and reflection, refusing to accept that centre's main teacher as my 'root lama', I found solitary practice more motivating. It has its obvious drawbacks, not knowing if one has had any insightful experiences for one, but there are some wonderful teachers posting authentic dharma online (of which Lama Choga is one). If a dharma talk consists of the teacher talking about motorcycles and parachute jumps, I personally think it's of dubious value. I remember one lama explaining to me that 'we don't practice mediation in order to become good at it (in the western sense of why we practice something), we practice for the sake of practice'. Perhaps I'm mistaken, but I found this beneficial. Thank you for your kind teaching. 🙏🙏🙏

Now you have got the right idea! There are many authentic teachers in Nepal. Thrangu monastery offers any Westerner free entrance into the Shedra program (but you have to get your own visas and air tickets). It is a 12 year program, but you can also visit for a short retreat but you will need to pay for accommodation if you are just there for a short visit. The retreat centre I stayed in for 8 years offers 1 week to 1 month retreats but unfortunately you will need to book at least a year in advance because there are so many people who want to go there. And many other places but maybe you should contact me directly and I can give you more details. Check out the channel home page to find my details. 🙏🙏🙏

I joined a nichiren Buddhist organization called SGI recently, and had a gohonzon enshrined in my home. Does chanting the mantra "Nam Myoho Renge Kyo" make for a good tool to introduce me to Bhuddism?
@ultimatemeaning8 ай бұрын
Nichiren Buddhism is a long established sect of the Japanese tradition that holds three basic principles 1. The faith in Nichiren's Gohonzon 2, The chanting of Nam Myoho Renge Kyo with varying recitations of the Lotus Sutra 3. The study of Nichiren's scriptural writings This is a devotional practice, and to my mind falls into a similar category with Pure Lands Buddhism. In general there are three activities associated with the dharma, and those are 1. Study, 2. Contemplation, and 3. Meditation, and as you can see here then study (of the Sutras, and also of the masters own writings) is an important part of the process. Ultimately one has to understand one's own aims and objectives on the spiritual path and by that the journey is shaped. But all of the above are positive and virtuous activities that will help you along that journey. Thanks for sharing! 🙏🙏🙏

And this is precisely the point that I am making, and so the question is where do you find such a teacher? Well it is almost certain you won't find them hanging around the local dharma centre in the West. Thank you for sharing these wonderful words BTW the English doesn't doesn't carry the meaning of the Tibetan.
@user-yt3be3wo4r8 ай бұрын
It's definitely hard to find qualified spiritual teacher until then you consider someone as a teacher དགེ་རྒན་ not as your root guru དགེ་བའི་བཤེས་གཉེནor རྩ་བའི་བླ་མ and continue learning. Sometimes not finding right teacher may be our own karmic fault or shortcomings. So in the meantime we should engage ourselves in བསགས་སྦྱང་ accumulate virtues and purify obscurations and hopefully opportunity will present itself in finding a qualified spiritual teacher.
@ultimatemeaning8 ай бұрын
@@user-yt3be3wo4r Agreed and so that means that even volunteering at the local dharma centre can help one to gather the accumulations, as long as the dharma centre is a place of virtue. And it better than nothing or living a life of reckless abandon. But compared to washing plates or selling incense then resting for one second in the nature of emptiness is taught to be equivalent to countless eons of these lesser virtues. And what do you need to do if you want to realise the meaning of emptiness? Well then you need to study under the guidance of an authentic teacher. And how do you find an authentic teacher? Well you are unlikely to find one hanging around the local dharma centre in the West.

May I ask about your prayer wheel? What is happening when you turn it?
@ultimatemeaning8 ай бұрын
mani wheel There are three type of virtue, body, speech, and mind. The Mani wheel contains a scroll of 1008 Om Mani Pedme Hung mantras, the mantra of universal love. the physical action of spinning the wheel is bodily virtue. There are many negative things we can do with out body, but spinning prayers for love are at least a small virtue. Saying the "Om Mani" mantra while spinning the wheel it becomes a form of speech virtue. Most of the time we use our speech for negativity or idly engaging in gossip and mundane preoccupation, and saying the mantra is at least a small virtue. Bringing to mind the meaning of the Mani mantra makes spinning the wheel a form of mind virtue, and with the mind focused on love and compassion then there is no room for negative thoughts and meaningless mental chatter. And so at least this becomes a small virtue. In the dharma it says don't overlook the smallest virtue and avoid all negativity, so the wheel helps us to accumulate virtue of body speech and mind and also distracts us from negativity and wasting our time in meaningless pursuits. It also acts as a meditation aid and a reminder to practice. Hope that helps

It’s a prayer wheel. They have a scroll with a mantra or prayer written inside and are spun clockwise so the mantra or prayer is read left to right. It is for merit. Spinning it 100 times when doing something up and about earns the merit as if you said the mantra or prayer 100 times. It’s meditative. Most popular in Tibetan Buddhism but not limited to it.

"Sometimes the dharma centre it self becomes an obstacle to our quest for #awakeing on the #spiritualpath" Just look at it. If you follow ANYBODY you will never have an "awakeing" or whatever you wanna call it. Be a light to yourself. Because if your candle was lit by another person, than this person can blow it out. Your light can be taken away when i comes from the outside. But if you are a light to yourself ... absolutly nobody can make it dark for you. It is logical that following something will never lead to truth. Truth is a pathless land.

I feel sad for all the monks that seek enlightement, tossing their lives away for the desire to get rid of desire. Let me get this straight for you: Desire is something i can witness. I can see the danger of desire. I can see what it does to humans. To myself. - THat is a fact. You can observe it within yourself. Non - Desire is something i can not witness. Since i cant observe it, its a non fact. I just assume that i get rid of my problems when i get rid of desire. That is what alle the monks are doing. But they follow an illusion. They follow the logic of thought. "If desire is my problem, just dont desire and we are fine". THats what their brain is telling them and there you have it. You are now in the world of thought. And thought THINKS that the non fact of not desiring will lead to the goal of "enlightement". That is utterly wrong. Hope you will see this one day.

@@memesmojo5622 Desire is movement. I can witness the movement because it has at least 2 states. For example: Iam walking down the stree and feel normal (State 1), then i see a beautiful woman and i get arroused (State 2). Now i want something from that woman (State 3 - desire is born). You can witness all this within yourself. Non desire is not a movement. I can only detect th absence of desire. But the absence of desire is my normal state. As soon as i desire i can detect a change. But i can not witness "not changing". What i want to say is: You can not deny yourself that you get arroused. If you do, it comes from the false conclusion that non desire is the antidote to desire. So witnessing non desire is a movement of thought. Its a conclusion. Not an observation.
