Primary care doc here. I will often feel a little behind when I walk into a patient’s room. I had just spent 20 minutes on the phone with a patient’s insurance company who had denied a prior authorization for their insulin. Or I was just in a room with meemaw explaining to her that ivermectin is not a treatment for COVID. Or I had spent a little time writing the note for the prior patient and including the 1,000,000 different things insurance companies require me to document just so my patient can get basic care. I will often ask “what brings you here?” because I need that 15 seconds to get my mind on track. In short, don’t blame your doctor, blame the BS insurance companies put on us and expect us to see 20+ patients a day. I’ve had it with them!

I get my health care through the VA and never have to fill out paperwork. The front desk just asks me if any of my contact info has changed. The nurse puts her discussion with me in the notes. And because there is no insurance involved, my primary just reads it before I go in to see her. I go once a year, and she spends about an hour with me. No one second guesses her. Everyone should have the same.

I agree! I was a nurse and now I’m in medical school, and from both perspectives, some patients totally change their complaints by the time they get to the provider. We’re also taught after the introduction to ask “what brings you in today?” And to keep asking if there is anything else until the patient runs out of complaints. So I think it’s probably just habit by the time you’re an attending😅😂

About your doctors appointments, I can only say: ONLY IN AMERIKA. Here in Europe, healthcare is not only (almost) free, but also super efficient. You come in, they read your ID-card , and the doctor sees your complete medical history when he he calls you in. If you need prescription drugs, he puts the prescription in your account. Then you go to any pharmacy that you come across, they read your ID-card and know what you need. Same with elections: no voter registration. A month before the election you get your voting letter that you have to take and present together with your ID card on election day. BTW voting is compulsory in Belgium. You can get a fine if you don’t show up.

I am usually patient when waiting to see a doctor. I enter the office, notice who’s there, see more people enter, and watch as we are brought into to exam rooms more or less in order of arrival. However, I reached my limit of tolerance last year. I was in for my third visit to my former dermatologist for a full body scan. I liked the doctor and she had provided the care I needed. This day I arrived for a 10:30 appointment at 10:10. There were 4 other patients in the newly redone lobby. Over the next 40 minutes all of those patients as well as 6 to 8 others who arrived after I did were seen before me. Only 1 had an earlier appointment than me. At 10:50, when my appointment was already 20 minutes late I went to the counter and asked if I was still on the schedule. Without looking at me one of the staff told me yes, you are on the list. More patients arrived and were seen before me. Finally at 11:15, 45 minutes late, I was lead to an exam room. The poor assistant asked me how I was feeling. I told him, loudly and profanely. I avoided the F word but otherwise displayed a thorough knowledge of bad language. The result is that I will never go back there, they would not have me there, and that’s a shame because I liked the doctor. I’m simply not willing to put up with that kind of treatment anywhere. If they had explained the delay to me when I asked, say, telling me a full body scan takes more time and their scheduling required some sort of adjustment, I would have just sat there and waited, but they said nothing. I’ve had it with that doctor’s office!

On the point of Netflix, I like to believe that's in the consumer's interests, as the "are you still watching?" only pops up if you're "idle", if you pause, actually click the next episode button, etc, it won't pop up, but the message popping up will halt the playback of whatever you're watching, and then you won't have to figure out where you left off if you accidentally left it on and went elsewhere for a bit, or fell asleep, etc.

Too add to the doctor office visit - you provide all the intake form documentation and make all the corrections/updates for them to correct the information (e.g., medication list). Then the next time you go none of those corrections/updates have been made in their record. I’ve spoken with the nurse, office manager, and physician about this and it continues to occur. I could have fixed all of it in a fraction of the time I was waiting. 🙄

Pumps, you said you liked being called a broad and I thought where did that term come from...so I looked it up. Here's the answer: Where did calling a woman broad come from? Apparently,it first appeared in 1911 as a metaphor for a “meal ticket”, signifying the relationship between a woman and her pimp, which led to the association of the word “broad” with prostitutes, and/or women w loose morals. Go Pumps!
