Another related tip. Even with a windless, the chain can sometimes get bound up when exiting the locker, and it's tempting to reach in there with your hand to free it up. This is a big mistake. I learned to keep an old broken winch handle up there for this scenario.

Beginner myself, but maybe tying a line on the anchor chain, then putting it on the winch, would make it easier to raise the anchor until you get the windlass running.
@SVRestless15 сағат бұрын
@mikew3194 prob would have been safer than what I did. The stern anchor was caught on the bow anchor chain. I probably should have winched the chain up enough to unhook the kedge anchor. I eventually drove the boat enough to release the tension then pulled it up.

I am curious what your skillset is. Drivetrain? Mechanical? Plumbung? Electrical? Etc. Am looking into getting a boat and taking a cruise, but have no sailing knowledge other than Utube Academy. But I grew up on a farm and have good (not great) skills in almost all basic fields. Have but a couple houses by hand, barns also. Including the plumbing, electrical, etc. So the issue is that I don't know what I don't know. Any advice or ideas from anyone?
@SVRestless2 күн бұрын
@goatman3828 I have a pilots license. I was in the Marine Corps. Before getting on this boat i had no experience with diesel engines. They are pretty simple, but there is definitely a learning curve. I feel like I understand my engine pretty well now, and it seems pretty bulletproof. I work on my own cars. Most of all I think you have to be good at problem solving and be very brave/ work well under pressure. You are forced to learn fast or you won't make it. I've been out on the water for 2 months now. When the wind is blowing, it can be scary. Especially at night when you can't see anything. The electrical is confusing at first, but you will understand it after rewiring the boat. I spent 7 months living on this boat at the Marina. The more time you spend on the boat, the More everything starts to be demistified.

Try and balance the 'you're not ready' thoughts with the 'nothing ventured, nothing gained' thoughts. I rebuilt my first engine when I was 10 years old. Everyone told my dad that I wasn't ready or able to do it. Luckily my dad hated mechanical work. So he figured what's the worst I could do to a tractor that doesn't run. That was almost 50 years ago. Christ!! How was that so long ago??? Anyway, still using that tractor today. Didn't have any quick answers back then. Just a rotary phone and no one to call. You are doing fine. The struggle is what makes it so worth it in the end. Try and do some Utube research before you tackle a job that you don't know about. Perhaps give us your future plans, for instance, the engine fuel problem. There are plenty of us that can help troubleshoot a specific issue. I understand you were under the gun there. But, say you are going to re-rig your standing gear. Put that out there a week or two first. I'm sure someone will chime in on any possible issues or tips.👍🏻
