What a great help! One of the mistakes I've made when painting, it was about the saturation & value of the colors, very bright, less dark. Oversaturated the colors.

This is very helpful, thank you! ❤ I’ve bought a lot of watercolor paints over the years, and it’s been difficult to pick the colors.

Showing the amounts to mix by making the dots larger or smaller helps a ton!! I never know how much to do and by the time I've finally reached the color I want, I usually have far too much of it :')

I know what you mean! It's so much easier when you can visually see the ratio.

I'm learning how to use alcohol markers and a mistake I made was using green to lighten a blue. after all, green is warmer than blue, so it must make it lighter, right? but it actually made it cooler and darker. I probably should've used a warmer color like yellow or red to lighten it. Do u actually have a tutorial or any advice that explains how layering markers work?

Oh my goodness this info just overwhelmed me 😢, especially when you mentioned context and how the gray square looks a bit blue....huh? I know some colors appear to pop and/or recede depending on the background color, but I can't see what others see when it's said that a certain color looks more blue or red....is something wrong with how I view colors?

I totally get how it can feel like "is there something wrong with my eyes?" or that other artists are just making up the colours they see, but this is absolutely a skill you can develop with practice! Here are some exercises you can try if you're ever facing artblock: 1. Traditional or digital colour studies! paint reference photos without using a colour picker and see how closely you can match your version to the original colours. 2. Practice colour mixing! It's as simple as looking at a colour swatch and trying to recreate that colour from scratch. You'll be surprised to find that a lot of colours are not composed of the hues you thought they were! ^^; Even though red is known as a warm colour, can you learn to differentiate between a "cool" red from a "warm" red by mixing in other hues? Colour is relative, so it's easy for your brain to trick you eyes into seeing certain colours. Practicing these exercises will eventually help your eyes (and brain) to see the subtle hues that Fei mentions in the video!

@jellobeanartist I've actually tried that....looking at a reference and trying to paint the colors I see; it's a bit harder than I thought because the colors I used did not match what was in the reference....not to a tee, but somewhat close enough. I'll keep trying because it makes me feel dumb when I watch these kind of videos; like what are they seeing that I can't. I also think I can tell the difference between a warm red and cool red; I've tried that with other colors too, but it's still hit or miss. I'm learning on my own so I think it's harder as I feel other people have been to art school or they've been drawing far longer than I. Thanks for the tips though; I try not to put myself down about how I absorb info, but that's a long road too 😊

@@Sammy_47 Don't worry, we all learn at our own pace! That gray square just appears different depending on what it's surrounded by (and so do all colours, but it's easier to see with gray). While our eyes may be fooled, our brains often try and outsmart our eyes by telling us "No, that's not blue, it's gray!" so if you're more logical by nature (as opposed to intuitive) that could be the reason. Don't be so hard on yourself! As artists we are continuously observing and training our eyes. If you're learning on your own you could consider joining the Discord (free) so that you can discuss and absorb with other like-minded art nerds, or join the Patreon and chat with our instructors and have access to professional critique!
