I wanted there to be a Galaxy Ranger video on KZbin made by an actual fan of the show, covering details that interested me. I couldn't find one so I made this. I hope you enjoy it. Thanks! - Aten EDIT: I plan on reuploading this video in a few months. I want that video to be THE definitive (evergreen) Galaxy Rangers video on KZbin. There's three things in it I need to correct so it holds up. (I blame being overworked in the process of making it. I put more work hours into that than any other video.) 1. Official lore says Mogul has six arms. Images show four. It was stupid of me not to have caught that and address it. 2. Wiki says Star Blazers was the first .... etc. It (and thus I) should say, "was one of the first" since (for example, Speed Racer was from the late 60s) . It was stupid of me not to have caught that and address it. 3) I misspoke and said Fritz Lieber when I meant Fritz Lang. It was stupid of me not to have caught that.

The 80's and early 90's had the BEST serialized cartoons. Another sci-fi western show that came out around the same time was BraveStarr which was also thoroughly enjoyable.

For sure. And Bravestarr was commonly mentioned when I was reading about this show. My StarLaw video research brought me to early Isaac Asimov sci fi (under a different name) writing about intergalactic space cowboys.

It depresses me that you don’t have a game system you have on your shelf that you can adapt to it. I have six, although three of them are less than complete enough to do it justice. GURPS, Traveller: The New Era, Renegade Legion, Mechwarrior II, Shadowrun or one of the Star Wars editions could work. I don’t have Rifts, but that could work as well. The expanded universe of Star Wars even includes something roughly similar in the Aquilonian Rangers, who were supposed to be failed Jedi Knights who served the Jedi Knights before the clone wars were firmly established by the prequel films. That was when the assumption was that the Jedi fought against the clones, rather than alongside them. That came out of the Marvel Comics Star Wars series and was based on the original draft of the script when Luke Starkiller was an Aquilonian (a subtle homage to Howard’s Conan).

Growing up in the semi-rural Northeast, without cable, I feel like I really missed out. Boston was the closest major market, and we were far enough away that we didn't get any broadcast channels out of Boston. There were cartoons I got a chance to see an episode or two of when visiting friends, like He-Man or The Thundercats, which I didn't really like. But most of the cartoons my friends would talk about, I never got a chance to see. If it wasn't on ABC or NBC on Saturday morning, I probably didn't see it. CBS was iffy. It was technically a broadcast channel in our area, but because of some geographic/atmospheric/physics quirks, it rarely worked on our TVs. I have always confused this show with SilverHawks, which I believe also had a "space Western" vibe. While I had a couple SiverHawks toys (thanks to bargain bins), I never saw it or Galaxy Rangers. One I did see from around the same time, and have raided for ideas frequently, was Visionaries. It too mixed magic and science in weird ways, and had lots of creativity, even if it was clearly in service of selling toys.

Wasn’t there a live-action show in the early ‘80s with the same name? I can vaguely remember it being on SEB (Southern European Broadcasting) in the hour before I went to school every weekday. That would have been between ‘83-‘86, probably ‘85 or so. Watching it was like watching a hybrid of Blake’s 7 and Doctor Who, rather than something good like Battlestar Galactica or Buck Rodgers. The quality of it was akin to some of the Ultraman movies. The cartoon had a good premise. It’s one that I’ve used in games in the past, with just a little tweak here or there. It works really well in the post-empire era for Star Wars.

I have never heard of it other than from you, and I'm not sure if I will like it (though considering that I'm a fan of one supposedly-German excessively edgy space pirate in a cloak from the same age anime, it's not impossible). Heck, there's a whole bunch of stuff from my country's history that I can do "now *in space*", and as long as I don't publish it, I only need to worry about my players being OK with it, not the general public
