I have been in Croasdaile Farm Durham for a couple years. Cant afford a house!!! Live in an apartment. I was scared of Durham but I have grown to love the outskirts and how its so "old/new". Homes I can afford are too much need of repair or are too close to rough looking areas.

Durham has gotten very expensive! Croasdaile is a great area to live!

I am a new subscriber to your channel. Love your videos. I am planning to move to Raleigh / Durham area. I work remotely and is looking for a 2 bedroom apartment. I can live a bit far from the main areas but I don't want to pay higher rent since I work remotely. Which cities would you recommend?

It costs a LOT more to live in Carey. We have trails here and Eno State Park. Cary taxes are very high.
@raleigh-durhamnc

Yes Cary is definitely significantly more expensive in terms of housing! Durham County taxes are actually more expensive though if you can believe it!

Thanks for making this informative video. I heard that big tech (apple, meta) are coming to Durham, which will raise property values considerably over the next 5 years. I've heard this from people that have been living in Durham for the last 15 years and people that don't live there as well. What's your take on this? Also, are you saying the internet is bad in Durham? I can NOT handle that as my job and livelihood is very much based on fast internet. Does CARY (contain area for retired yankees, as I understand) have better internet in your opinion?
@raleigh-durhamnc
@raleigh-durhamnc 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the questions! Apple is coming for sure. They will have a campus in RTP and it's currently being built. Meta was rumored to be coming but to my knowledge, nothing has been confirmed yet. The internet isn't bad in Durham. We've lived in Durham for a long time and always had fine internet, though I've never had fiber. We have Spectrum and its been fine. I think Cary in general is better developed than Durham! You would probably have more options in Cary in terms of providers and speed. But in both areas you would have access at least good internet.

I think the weather has an affect on the internet. So if your power is out and there is bad weather, you will have to wait until it has been restored. Everyone relies on the internet and computers. Duke Power is very good about getting things up and running. If you are stuck, you can set up a hot spot temporarily. There are a lot more options.

Durham has fiber. The same providers cover the towns in most other areas. We have all these medical facilities and RTP that rely on internet in Durham. Cary has snob appeal. These realtors seem to be pushing for Carey. Woodcroft in Durham is connected by lots of trails. It’s a beautiful area. It’s not a good idea for everyone to have easy access to your house anyway. Maybe you folks ought to brush up on your internet skills. We have voice over landlines in South Durham. There are so many resources. These are all over.

If you look around in social media everyone wants their 30 seconds of fame with plugging in for cost of living, crime, etc. It is a shame that social media is saturated with realtors trying to tune people into their area. I believe the real estate problem in our country is much bigger and warrants a careful look into what you are really getting if you don't have to relocate because of a J.O.B. Since there are now millions of Americans looking for the ultimate retirement location I personally review actual data and visit the area to generate an informed decision / conclusion.

Public school system is an issue if you have kids. I went to CE Jordan High School, which I guess would be considered the best normal/non-charter public high school in Durham and I would probably live in Chapel Hill if for no other reason than the fact that the school system there is so much better. Jordan was a lot rougher than one might suppose, the teachers were obviously tremendously overworked and some were just bad, the facilities were quite old and I went there some years ago and it hasn't been renovated since. And like I said from what I understand Jordan is the best of the lot for high schools in Durham. But even for Elementary Schools, they built Hope Valley Elementary then six months later because of population growth they put up a ton of trailers as classrooms, that was probably over 15 years ago now, and the trailers are still out there. I love Durham, it's a great city but I wouldn't live there specifically because of the school system. If you can get your kids into Durham School of the Arts then it's not an issue.

all the magnets schools options and NCSSM (best of the country) makes your statement a bit misleading...

I disagree completely. Durham has some of the best public schools in the country (and private schools might I add). I attended Pre-IB and IB Schools while growing up in Durham (Burton Geo-World Magnet, Shepard Middle School, and Hillside). The schools were very well resourced and at Hillside High School I traveled internationally every year with their International Theater exchange program. The program has traveled to China, Japan, Brazil, various African Nations, Europe, Australia and more.... We traveled to these places performing and doing mission work. And that doesn't even include the wonderful programs outside the Arts. I'm raising children in the NJ/NY area now and let me tell you... I never appreciated how special Durham Public Schools is until I started raising kids up North. I've also lived in various parts of the country including LA and DC and nothing compares to the level of care and resources provided to DPS students. Then of course on the private school level you've got Duke School for Children and NC School of Science and Math (and parents from all over the country are sending their kids to these schools or straight up moving to Durham for these programs). DPS students are graduating and going off to Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Howard, Morehouse, Spelman... some of the best Universities in the Country and THRIVING. They're more equipped and prepared than most students...

@@KevinWilsonJr. My experience at Jordan was somewhat different. I remember police getting called to class to arrest a classmate, I remember a guy who used to mix whiskey in to his coke and the entire middle of the class room smelling like whiskey, I remember another guy who sold drugs during geometry class. We had random police inspections once a month to check for weapons and drugs and I've heard others like Northern are worse. I can't speak to Hillside but I'd definitely pay more for a house in Chapel Hill for their public school system.

Hi! In the spring, we are mostly dealing with tree pollen. Predominantly pine. Ragweed comes in the fall. I don't know how "bad" it is compared to other states! The pine pollen here is pretty high for sure though. Durham is a very welcoming place for all people! Come take a visit sometime!

I have lived in Durham for two years. It's garbage. Taxes are extremely high. The only good thing is the veterans affairs. It's surprisingly ghetto. Seems there has been a bunch of Bronx transplants etc... as a former New Yorker I love the BX but these would be the deushbags the BX spit out.
