Ive seen so many vids on growing potatoes. Some in containers, other under straw and how to amend the soil and what varieties do best . The bottom line is as long as you get more than what you planted it's a good thing.

Fun video, Eric. I generally harvest my potatoes when the plants decline to die down. I think you might have left them a bit long. All that starch is valuable to critters of all types - 6 legged and 4 legged. Two or three years ago, I hardly got any potatoes due to the squirrels. It was a dry year, and the squirrels were digging up my potatoes. How do I know, well, we'd see them running across the power lines with potatoes in their mouths... Such is nature!

Eric, I'm in the halfway point of one fun experiment: Sunchokes! I planted them in a raised bed. They grew ten feet tall and were beautiful. I've read that you can harvest the roots during the winter, and regardless of harvesting, they come back next year. We shall see. My other experiment is planting and harvesting field corn. I got a grinder and plan to make corn meal. They've been drying at home for a month now. I got around thirty small ears, so I'm curious how much corn meal that will yield. Thanks for the inspiration, Eric.

Hi Chris, I have grown sun chokes, they are good but invasive. Nice flowers too. Have not done corn, good luck with that. 😀

I planted potatoes a couple of years ago with very little success. Thanks for putting up this video as it encourages me to try again this year. Also, grab a cookbook and expand your potato recipes. Potato soup is wonderful, easy and great to Share. Make it thick and use part 1/2 &1/2 for extra richness. Scalloped potatoes warm up the kitchen and will delight you. Use ham and lots of cheese. I improvise with this ultimate comfort food. Have followed you for a long time. My German Shepherd and Yellow Lab send Playful Days forever. Continue please. Sometimes in a supermarket I cringe at the way clerks throw the food into bags like they were rocks. I feel the same when I pick my home grown veggies and toss them into a container. A few years ago I started doing this with a lot of deference and respect and gratitude that they grew themselves for me. For me harvesting from my garden is a holy experience that I don't take for granted, even the ugly little ones, I am grateful and respectful. I say this because you seemed to toss them abruptly and maybe you would enjoy my perspective.

I grow potatoes in 20 gallon grow bags , I fill them with growing medium I buy( peat moss vermiculite etc mix). At the end of the season there’s no need to fork I just dump the bag into my wheelbarrow and pluck out the potatoes…

Zoomiezzzz 😂My labs do that too! A long time fan of " Better done than perfect " 😂 I'm a transplant from Canada living in the land of the midnight sun at the top of the UK (and then keep going north until you are in gale force winds, woolen knits and feel the calm that comes with being surrounded by puffins, seals, sheep, heather, neolithic remnants and knowing that you are so far north that you must travel south for hours by ferry to get to the 'north of mainland UK' 😊). Blessings to you and "the camera operator" 😊.

I only got 1 nickle sized tater out of each plant. My friend used 3 old car tires for his hills and filled them with straw and dirt. Easy harvest and a good amount of taters.

So I've heard that less eyes on the potato seed means that you'll have larger potatoes... Supposedly. Many eyes yields many small potatoes... Supposedly. I'm going to try it out next year for larger potatoes. Also, I'm going to add buckets to make harvesting easier. What has your experience been, Eric and other Garden Forkers?
@gardenfork

I don’t cut the seed potatoes, might be a reason for low harvest.
