The reason for the looseness of the blades is to prevent any vibrations from building up in the fan, which could cause a catastrophic failure. When the engine is operating, their is an immense centrifugal force on each blade, which seats each one very tightly in its slot, so it no longer wiggles. The looseness allows the blades to find their best position as the engine spools up and this makes the fan very balanced and eliminates vibrations.

Very interesting - I read up, apparently this is to prevent resonance from occurring, if they were connected rigidly then at a certain rpm they might resonate and cause the engine to disintegrate! In fact, rust and corrosion can cause them to cease up, so if you find the blades are rigid you actually do not want to fly!
@Drakey_Fenix6 жыл бұрын
This is really cool. I didn't know that
@new.handle6 жыл бұрын
That is it ;) and that resonance could than be sent along wing to fuselage... to prevent this (among other things), wings are also flexible...

Oooh so that's why. Which reminded me when the Germans were trying to make the first jet fighter it was delayed for years until they figured out resonance was breaking up the engine into bits so they shortened the blades for a quick fix.

The point of this is to reduce vibration by allowing the blades to find their natural center when the centrifugal force beings acting on the blades when spinning. It's a very clever solution to a problem which plagued early turbojet development.

It's for Thermal Compliance. essentially, when the blades were close fitting when they were at room temperature, when the blades heat up from the engine being on they will expand into the housing and sieze solid. This is obviously bad. hence, the blades are designed such that they're a rattling fit, but during usage conditions and temperature, they'll expand slightly and be a perfect fit inside the housings.

My guess is that if you didnt have the extra space, the blades would burst due to thermal expansion while running after a while because they would be pressed against each other, leading to unhappy dying passengers, which wouldnt be too nice. The same as the Sr-71 Blackbird, which LEAKED FUEL at launch, because otherwise the tiles it was built of would burst due to them expanding and with that pressing against each other. Dont complain about them not knowing their stuff: if you think the design and assembly of this wonder of technology is easy, then i beg you to redesign this engine and send me a link of its testrun. Sorry for sounding mad, but people should not judge things, of which they dont even grasp their fundamental rules. I applaud the thousands of people that worked for decades, creating this wonder of engineering and science.

The all the blades (fan blades, compressor/stator blades) are fitted extremely securely, consider immense centrifugal force and centripetal force they have to withstand at insane rmp. They are also fitted in such a way that they can "wiggle" as you see in the video, so they do not shatter from vibration. *So yes, "airplanes are way complex engineering"* Have a look kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYm2mmd9jbqioNEm15s
@derbigpr5006 жыл бұрын
They way they are built makes the FAR MORE COMPLEX than if they were just attached with bolts. They don't actually move or rattle when the engine functions, but if they weren't "loose" like that they'd break in function.
