One thing that no one ever talks about is the geographic location where you live. I love pictures of homes that have that beautiful soft light from more northern locations and have tried to reproduce that. BUT I live in Florida and so paint featured in rooms in England or Canada or Norway never look right in my home lol 😮and have wasted a lot of money learning that lesson. Example is “Revere Pewter” by BM. Beautiful in the magazines, horrid in my home. 😢

Great advice! undertones & direction rooms are facing are so important. I LOVEUltra PureWhite by Behr fora true, crisp white. This is their base color. Read you moved from Atlanta. Sad to lose you, but glad you found your forever home. New subscriber!

Such good advice and explanation to why you can't jump stores with different paint chips! You are so right about telling folks to buy the paint from the company that they love the sample from and I get so tired of folks ignoring me on this. I cannot tell you how many times a client cheaps out and go to Lowes or home depot with Benjamin more or Sherwin Williams wondering why Ballet white or White Dove or Agreeable Gray (or any color for that matter) from Home depot or god forbid Wal-mart like one client did... it will NOT look the same! Not only are their bases different so are their color pigments. I picked out a beautiful color for a house we were getting ready to put on the market, it had Peach/Tan floors (not popular) and I painted the cabinets BM White Dove (beautiful mild White that goes with cool or warm tones and is a masterful color for cabinets) and I needed SW Sea Salt to make it all work with the floors (which I could not change out). The dang Painter went to BM (this is where he got his huge discount) and brought BM paint tinted to match the SW paint chip thinking I wouldn't notice. I walked in and shook my head. He was shocked I noticed. It was so much Bluer than the SW version which only made the floors look more pink than tan/peach. I made him re-do it and he himself was surprised at the difference it made to help it call come together. If you fall in love with a Wal-Mart or Home Depot color.. get it from Wal-Mart or Home Depot. If you love BM color get it at BM and same for SW.. There is NO such thing as color matching if you are not going to the store the chip is from and if you do not care about tone differences then it doesn't matter but, if you do it will matter. Designers pick colors for each room. If you love a color in the bight sunny room you might not like it in the dark room. Colors can be darkened or lightened for the room they are in to keep it looking the same. Ex: I love BM Revere Pewter have it lightened by 50% for those hall ways and darker rooms. It will read the same color throughout the house. What works for your bright sunny rooms might not work for you darker rooms and Vis versa. It doesn't cost anymore to use a different color in the rooms where you don't love your favorite color. It will bother you to your core if you have to look at the wrong shade and you will end up re-painting it anyways..

I chose Behr Polar Bear white for my trim, So much better than the Behr Antique White i have had on my trim for years.

When i met my husband his mom and dad had their livingroom a 💩 brown omg i hated it. So i painted it a white with a very light light blue undertone, also semi-gloss and IT WAS LIKE NIGHT AND DAY!! OMG before you could get enough lights on, after you didnt even need the lights on it brightened it up so much, easier to clean etc! Now we are picking the wall/trim paint and flooring out for a house were going to be renting "my husbands remodeking it for the guy" and i just want all the walls to be one simple color, i dint want a yellowish under tone i hate when white walls just look cruddy bc the white isnt WHITE. My OCD wont allow me to pick colors that have brown, gellow, egg shell tones i just cannt deal with it the walls akways seem dirty to my eyes and brain. So i just want a semi-gloss "best for kids and doesnt fade or wipe off when moping my walls which i do weekly bc of dirty hands and things. And just a bright WHITE white. Choosing the trim is probably going ti be a very light grey i have to look at shades and then picking a floor that flows wirh the walls and trim! The floors are going to be lanolium in the whole house bc thats what i want its easiest to clean, keeo clean, it lasts a long time and its cheap.

I chose Swiss coffee for my east facing kitchen. It went perfect with the brambleton cabinets I bought from lowes. Always looks white.

Why would we choose warmer undertones for bedrooms where sunlights dont reach its already dark there so chosing warmer undertone colour will make it even more dull, wont it?

such an informative video! could I kindly ask what white or off-white color would you recommend for 2 of my rooms? 1. a north west facing bedroom (one window) that will be converted into a white built in closet for filming content? 2. A south west facing bedroom, one window both rooms have Shaw, desert light carpet (neutral color) its been very difficult to find a video for north west and south west rooms. Thanks in advanced for your help!

As for me, a southwest exposure can be kind of gray until the afternoon, then super warm. I have my room painted in BM Cream. It is yellow/candle waxy color. I use it mostly in the morning, so it deletes the gray.

I got chantilly lace for trim in a south facing room (walls in gray owl) and it’s WAY too cool and blue, it looks awful!!

A lot of people do actually paint a different white based on the light situation in each room. You don't have to though, the main purpose of the exercise of doing the swatches is just to be aware of what the white you choose is going to look like in each of your rooms.
