It's been a rough one so far. Thanks for sharing your experience. You are right- hardening off is SO critical and it's helpful to hear what happens when you try to rush it. I think they'll bounce back!

Haha thanks, Jenna! I never know if anyone reads those descriptions but I try to have fun with them anyway. The plants seem to have mostly survived and they're slowly coming back already. I'm glad I shared this, too, since I've had some great suggestions in the comments. Thanks for the support!

Hardening off is essential, that is for sure. A porch is quite good to do this. Putting them near bushes is great as well. You can also shock seedling trays in the first days of emergence during warm spells (60f or so) sunny days in January or February. In the first days they can immediately take full sun, and seem to continue producing protective compounds for full on uv sunlight after being brought in to grow under lights. Later on they acclimate much faster in my experience. It’s almost like they get some memory of it for a while. They also tend to be less leggy, since very bright light upon emergence stop cell walls of the stem from growing.

I’ve never thought to try that! It makes sense, though, especially for the brassicas. I’ll have to give it a try next year, for sure. Maybe we’ll even have a small greenhouse by then. Thank you for your boundless knowledge, Siloe!

Absolutely! It can be a challenge to manage it for a whole week or more unless you don't have any other commitments.

i usually have this problem, but this year I started all my brassicas outside in coldframes/greenhouse and they are off to the best start I have ever had. I wont start them inside going forward

@K Barnes it is! And that’s why many people buy them at a nursery, which is fine, but I love seeing them grow from a tiny seed to a big food-provider.

I pretty much had a similar thing happen. I did not realize the brassica would be so temperamental. Red Russian kale was the saddest but has bounced back. It took a ton of effort though, putting on row cover and then shade cloth on the random hot days. Such a weather roller coaster here in the Midwest.

I’m glad they still survived. I put up the row covers, but then it got extremely windy and warm enough that I had to leave them off for several days.
