i don’t understand the “ruining their innocence” claim. im an afab person born and raised in ontario. we had very middle of the road sex ed and my school didn’t have any until grade 6. i got my first period in grade 5 (a year before we started sex ed, which parents were able to opt out of for their children). my mom was raised in a household where they never discussed topics like periods and she was away for a business trip. my dad was one of two brothers and i doubt he fully understood what a period was or how to explain it to an 11 year old child. i thought i was dying. it was such a traumatic experience that i can remember every detail of it nine years later. what do conservatives think is going to ruin a child’s innocence more? learning about something they’ll find out about eventually on their own, or having a terrifying experience that will stay with you for the rest of your life?

His dog wasn't starving, and there's no way the dog was eating before him, so he must not actually be that badly off. I couldn't make this shit up if I tried. I think they do it because they *know* their behavior is reprehensible and they do have a spark of compassion, so they build up these bullshit excuses to justify themselves and not feel bad.

Where I live, the city's solution for the homeless "problem" is to build fences in green spaces, however this didn't deter homeless people from simply chilling OUTSIDE the fences. It's just theatre, pretending to do something. I think people's reluctance to help homeless people is because it completely contradicts values established in our Neo-Liberal culture, i.e. how we prioritize property owership. In my opinion, we should just bring back shanty towns, since home affordablity, let alone paying rent, is already starting to become an impossiblity. If we're set on dling nothing, we should at least give people that.

@Eudaletism
@Eudaletism Жыл бұрын
One thing we should do is make land (and other natural resources) into a shared property, a birthright ownership. It works as follows: everyone pays rent proportional to the land they use, which funds a UBI, so everyone also receives rent back. If you use exactly your fair share (total value of all the land divided by population) then you break even. If you use more, you end up paying in for your excess, and if you use less, you end up with net income. This would end landsquatting, eliminate slums and other inefficient land use, nearly eliminate homelessness, encourage efficient development and a bunch of other positive things. It's called georgism; economists love it, and both left and right libertarians like it. Add to that an externalities tax (since if you pollute the environment, you should have to pay everyone who uses the environment for the damage), end corporate subsidies, etc.

fun fact: Cosette - who unlike her mother isn't technically homeless, just mistreated - has brown hair in the book. She's commonly represented as blonde because people want her to be an ingenue, but the character who meant to embody and then subvert the ingenue trope is actually her mother, Fantine. And by the time she's homeless, Fantine isn't pretty anymore, she's a toothless, hairless, sickly sex worker. So though you make a good point, ironically, the way we THINK about these characters is actually even more relevant than the book itself

The issue with this is the rhetoric is designed to force accountability onto the individual for their own moral agenda. Those against abortion or sex education don't necesarily care if it doesn't reduce abortions or teenage sex. At that point, it's a moral failing of the individual. The argument instead needs to be made not about how to reduce abortions or teenage sex (which either aren't necessarily a problem but I digress) but discussing why these behaviors are stigmatized in the first place.

The big problem I think around almost every political issue regarding legislating ethics is simply that people have conflated the idea of self worth with being right, so criticism against any idea they hold is taken as a personal insult, and thus, people double down and are unable to discuss things rationally or in good faith, because the other side ends up becoming this evil monolith that cannot be empathized with. Idk if the problem is solvable to be honest, since the majority of supporters of any movement have little to no understanding of the movement they support, and instead adhere to that doctrine with a religious level of devotion.

Empathy allows for peaceful coexistence by understanding each other. Also you don't have to project someone else's living onto you. At least when no one gets harmed from it. Also some emotional reactions are trained and can be unlearned, like the reaction some may have when seeing feminine men or a gay couple. That reaction has nothing to do with empathy.

sorry to comment this on an old video, but i remember reading something in an article once. i cant remember the book for the life of me, but it was a sex ed book targeted toward children. because of a section detailing where it is bad to be touched, a child was able to point to the book and identify that they were being abused. the judge said something like "there were three heros in this case: the child who was able to speak up, and the author of the book for writing it, and the librarian for putting it in their library". it makes me sick that this is what people want to outlaw.

Even the right in sweden are pretty casual about all these topics. We have a lot of lgbtq+ people in our class and nobody really cares because it's mostly normalised (im actually not that updated in swedish politics but this is from what i remember last time i researched) We also have sex education pretty early (we learn about the existance of our reproductive organs in Kindergarten). We learn about consent very early too. And puberty in 5th grade 1-2 years before the time it happens. We also have sex education very early (like 6 or 7th grade). This is also because even some eigth graders are legally allowed to have sex. (15+)

The same would be true of a Democrat. If I had a teacher that was a democrat and did similar things it would not be okay.

To those who refuse to get involved in the ongoing political discussions surrounding the existence of LGBTQ+ folks because "it doesn't affect me": It doesn't affect *me...* until it does. I have LGBTQ+ friends - they're affected, and that affects me. There's a notable overlap between the autistic community and the LGBTQ+ community, and that might be enough for someone to take offence to me existing in their vicinity. It's possible that someone may think I'm not gender-conforming enough to be a "real" man (I'm teetotal and have zero interest in sports), and that that entitles them to commit violence against me. Anyone who doesn't think it affects them, because they're not LGBTQ+, hasn't considered the ramifications of bigotry like this being mainstreamed. It forces people into ever-more-tightly-defined molds that push them away from exploring who they are and what they enjoy. It progressively destroys the ability for disabled folks to engage with the world in a way that actually lets them thrive (after all, the "stay-at-home wife" is a long-standing tradition, but the "stay-at-home-husband" is a much more recent trend - if the man in a heteroseual couple has, for instance, narcolepsy, he's going to struggle with driving, much less putting eight hours of work in per day). And, yes, it forces LGBTQ+ folks to hide who they are, for fear of discrimination, violence and murder, which removes vital diversity in expressed opinions and perspectives.

I think something important we all need to recognize is the Right is NEVER honest about their intended outcomes. The legislation they choose to pursue ALWAYS comes from an intent to harm someone, and that should not be allowed in a modern society. The more we pretend they are just inept policymakers with outdated ideals, and not the draconian and hate fueled politicians that they are, the more they will get away with it under the pretext 'It's just for the kids, bro!' There is no facet of our nation they will not destroy to forward their fear machine. None.

13:15- so real? my mom didn't have sex ed and frankly her mom didnt want a girl. When she got her first period, she went to her mom sobbing, thinking she was dying. I had a sex ed module in the fourth grade, which explained puberty/periods, and was just like "oh i guess this is a period. thats why my tummy hurts :/" when i got it a year later. She was shocked when i was like 'mom im on my period do we have pads" instead of freaking tf out. frankly though that 4th grade is a bit late, i had a friend who's mom was ...emotionally distant... and she started going through puberty in the 3rd grade, before any sex ed. she didn't even get the emotional support after that traumatic realization.

Specifically, in elementary, remember the class talking about church, and some kid asked the teacher about it and she was like “I can’t talk about that with you guys. You guys can talk about it with each other but I can’t.” And we thought that was dumb as kids but it kind of makes sense, since the teacher across the hall was a religious zealot and wouldn’t let her kids say “oh my god,” or “retarded” in her class. She’d probably have Bible story time too if the state of Florida didn’t stop her from that 😂
