Don’t scrap your rusty anchor chain before you watch this

We are Outwiththewind, Sorin and Ana sailing around aboard our sailing yacht Mehalah an Oyster Mariner 35. Being stuck by Covid in a NZ boatyard we undertook more boat projects that we ever hoped for on this sailing around the world project. We are pretty thorough in maintaining our dearest sailing yacht Mehalah and since the anchor chain had gotten pretty rusty we looked into finding the most cost effective and sustainable solution. That was re-galvanising the chain. Overnight our chain was as new, saving NZ$400.

Looks like a spade anchor which has lead in it. Needs to be removed to before galvanising

you did not explain how you galvanize it. waste of time

Hi Nacho Tomey. The answer is in the movie but maybe not so clear for you. The boatyard we were in is working closely with a local company who is specialised in galvanising metal. So they collect it, take it to their specialised plant and drop it back once it’s done. Galvanising 80 meters of chain and the anchor is not something one can do in his back garden! Just Google your local Galvanising company and go from there. Good luck and ‘thanks’ for being so polite.
