I've actually been on the receiving end of Frankie. About 10 years ago my wife bought us tickets to go and see him for valentines day. We ended up sitting next to 2 lads a bit older than us. Some how they had managed to smuggle in two 1 liter bottles of vodka and 12 cans of Carlsberg Special Brew which is, a 9% lager, which they happily shared with us.. Towards the end he asked the audience for questions. I honestly can not remember much of it, other than he gave me a proper roasting. hahaha And, I wasn't even near the front!!!!

I saw Frankie many times in his early days, and he was great, but much milder. Once he got big, I was second row at a Frankie gig, and he absolutely destroyed a drunk heckler with the most outrageous insult I have ever heard. I could never repeat it here, but I almost choked laughing. And I wouldn´t say he´s sold out at all. He´s always been left wing, and has always cared about social issues, but doesn´t give a fig about how he talks about them. We come from two very close areas in Glasgow, had the same local cinema, and, according to his autobiography, would have seemed to have both fallen victim to the same permanently furious seatchecker.

Its pretty fair to say Frankie has simply evolved - not sold out. His humour is as scathing as ever, but he focuses a lot more on politics, social issues and the issues of the day, rather than straight forward insult humour. I don't consider him "woke" or whatever, but he's simply not afraid to call out politician's and media stars who are being pricks and insult them instead. Yes, as a result of that he often ends up defending LGBTQ rights, ethnic minorities, the poor, abuse victims and so on. Not so much because he thinks he is a social warrior but more to shame the idiots doing the abusing. He's as likely to attack a neo-nazi and a catholic priest in the same sentence. For a prime example of another brilliant comedian evolving, just watch clips of Billy Connelly through the years. Started out doing rude songs a swearing every second word, to presenting arts, history and culture documentaries. These people grow up, its that simple. And as they grow, they tend to get more serious and considered in what they say. They're still funny, but in a different way. That doesn't make them a sell-out.
