@Veneser Aban just because she created a mystic Code that imitates it does not mean it is anywhere close. Shirou’s Rho Aias, as half assed as it is, is a degraded version of the real thing. Mystic Codes are your average Chinese knock-off, it looks like it but it can’t ever hope to compare. Also, the encounter with Medea is kind of disingenuous. The real reason Medea loses is because she is a proud witch of the Age of Gods. She treated her as inferior and also expected modern mages not to taint magecraft by using martial arts. Rin lost the battle of mages and only won an all-or-nothing bet that Medea would not realize her attempt to use martial arts instead of magic. Also, I laugh at the idea Rin can rival Ciel’s magecraft potential considering Ciel was a naturally born abomination and in the Renake she now has gotten so busted she is basically servant-level.

Add to that the fact Ciel herself was entirely rewritten to be stronger and the entire interview is just full of inconsistencies in terms of how she is ranked and also out of date.

Rin basically being a low tier servant even as a human and without Ruby is so freaking badass. And she's not even uniquely suited to combat like Shirou! That's some big flex power right there. One thing though, I thought Shirou's ability to detect magical energy was like, shockingly good or something even to Rin? I've seen some people say he's 'like a bloodhound for magic energy', is that just a fan take or is there precedent for Shirou being better at magic detection than Rin when they are both unaided by tools or third-party forces?

He doesn't actually "smell" magical energy with his nose, that's the closest abstract sense he can attribute it to. Rin does comment that he's especially good at sensing supernatural abnormailities in the air. It's like you said, Shirou's really specialized in the combat related side of things but generally sucks at everything else. Rin is generally a prodigy at just about everything, but she isn't quite at the same level direct combat wise compared to the likes of Prime Kirei, UBW realized Shirou, or Bazett.

That said is Shirou a better sensor than Rin? I already knew Shirou didn't actually 'smell' magic or anything but the bloodhound thing is something I remember reading a few times and I don't know if it is backed up that much in canon.

@@PeachDragon_ Several. From the very start of the novel she begins by screwing up her summoning ritual due to forgetting the one hour clock change situation her dad set up as a test of sorts. Iis a minor screw-up (she was likely going to get Archer regardless) but it is a screw up that the novel writes in to tell the player she tends to choke at the eleven hour. The biggest example in the novels tend to center around the climax of the novel as she is always the one who tends to fail. In Fate she gets utterly destroyed by Kirei due to trusting him (even though she always claims she does not) and lowering her guard. In UBW she kind of had all the stakes against her anyway but she was really about to be absorbed by Angra had Archer not done a last second rescue. And in Heaven’s Feel she spends an entire fight dunking on her sister and verbally assaulting her, only to go soft and get critically injured at the end, which would have spelled the end had Shirou not been there (also Nasu confirms her reckless use of the Zelretch dagger is what caused the cavern to collapse which would have meant her eventual death anyway).

@@lenleon3699 so let's summarize. She lost against a church executioner while having her guard down, that's not something I'd hold up against any character. She forgot about a little detail in the summoning that wasn't even relevant in the end, and she wasn't willing to heartlessly kill her own sister. None of these things are against Rin. Even magus of higher caliber and with more experience wouldn't have been able to scratch sakura, but rin was Dunking on her as you yourself admitted, she was Dunking on the strongest magical being on the planet at the current time while holding back because she didn't want to kill her sister, and she only lost to kirei because she trusted him (she says she doesn't but she also says she doesn't like shirou)

Rin's reflexes definitely pass up Luvia's. This can easily be proven from two instances alone. Prisma Illya, when her and Luvia dodged the Saber Slash. Rin was both the first to move, and the one with the cleanest evasion. Luvia barely made it. At the end of UBW, Luvia apparantly did a great job tanking Rin's hits, but a bad job dodging them as she was talking about how she refused to go down no matter how many times she hit her, or where she hit her. It makes sense actually. Luvia's way of fighting is almost like an opposite to Rin's in spite of the similarities they both share. With Rin being the speedy glass cannon Rogue and Luvia basically being the Barbarian. Ironic.

Reading about her feats in the novel truely opened my eyes to how strong her jewel magecraft actually is. In the anime we always se her throw jewels willy nilly, so we think her magecraft is not that special, but then the novel tells us that just one of her top jewels is enough to level a house and it's like, god she's OP. I would very much like to see jewel magecraft being more explored, because on the right hands it can do pretty mindblowing things.
