This song still hits. Often played at family cookouts and gatherings. It’s a fun uptempo song that’s memorable. It just sticks. A great vocal performance on a dance song that stands the test of time is actually hard. I tend to think it’s harder than ballads.

That was a real good year for music in 1979, right at the height of disco, and rap music had started taking baby steps. I myself was 24 at this time, putting work in on those dance floors, and especially to this MJ hit.

I agree, the lyrics are nothing profound. However, MJ's strength as a songwriter was in the music and vocal melodies. He really had an ear for writing simple but awesome bass lines in particular, by beatboxing. He also came up with pretty catchy guitar riffs, like on Beat It, Dirty Diana, Wanna Be Startin' Somethin', Black Or White etc. He didn't write guitar solos though, he left that to the featured guitarists, Eddie Van Halen for example. Great reaction. Greetings from Sweden.

I disagree MJ is in the songwriters hall of fame for a great reason his lyrics wasn’t just okay but phenomenal and he wrote the song the song never wrote him like most singers end up having the issue of or don’t write any of their material at all MJ also hold the record for most Number 1 Hits being written by a music artist so what you said was just a pure false assumption😆✍🏽👑💯

This song, "Working Day And Night," "Burn This Disco Out," and of course "Rock With Youi," those are my favorite from Off The Wall.....But the album as a whole was great, little Janet was actually on the recording, if I am not mistaken, she played on a glass bottle for the procession. He was experimenting ith this song, and landed on a gold mine, yeah, not his best lyrics, but a great song, then the famous fade out.....
