This technique worked with my copic sketch markers, spectrum noir, and letraset tria markers with no problems. I see some people are confused about how to do this properly. The key is patience. After you put in a few drops of alcohol solution into the pen, shake it up a bit, and lay it down flat undisturbed for at LEAST 10 minutes or more. The reason for this is to allow the nib to fully absorb the liquid. If you try to use it too quickly then it will dry out because the nib has not fully absorbed the liquid. After that, pick up the pen and give it a little shake, and carefully open it (to make sure excess alcohol does not spill out all over the place) and test. It should work just like new.

Had a light cerulean blue Prisma that's been sitting around for a bit and never quite had the guts to just throw it away and then I stumbled upon this. Thank you so much, it works fantastic. I heard everywhere that rubbing alcohol will ruin the markers, but I get that the pigment just adds to it and refills easily. I'm so happy i can reuse my great Prismacolor markers now!!! Cannot thank enough!

Just a note . 91% isopropil has no oils in it. which is good. the other 5tages of rubbing have a mild oil in the, So they feel better on the skin. So 91% is better for using to mix with any paints.

Don't do this with copics. They are refillable, and adding alcohol without adding actual ink pigment will just dilute the saturation/intensity of your colour until there is nothing left. No point in doing something that could ruin your expensive markers if they are actually refillable.

Putting water into some sizes of Posca works. It is a hassle, they go out of their way to make it as difficult as possible. They put all that paint in but just let about half of it dry up because it is a pain to get water in so it lasts a little longer.

very helpful, thanks!:) Until recently, I also used IPA as alcohol marker blender/cleaner/diluter tool, I also made some homemade alc inks with it from Sharpies ^^. However, I checked a few data sheets for markers (promarkers, prismacolors and copics) and all of them consist of ethanol mainly, only some isopropyl and tiny percent of binder or other compounds (like rosin). So I figured, I'm gonna make the blender with ethyl not isopropyl from now on. Unfortunately, clear 96% ethanol is very expensive here, as it is ment for drinking purposes :C, and technical and medical-grade ones have some nasty, toxic additives and I'm not sure I want to be around these. Since there's rosin in Copic's data sheet and Copics inks are the best imho, I'm gonna experiment and add a bit of plain soldering rosin to the blender and see what happens. (luckily, solid rosin dilutes in organic alcohols^^) keep on saving, crafty people!

What's so great about this is that you see tons and tons of used Prismas on eBay for such a low price. I've seen huge lots of used Prismacolor's for dirt cheap. Buy a lot, and some of this alcohol and you basically have a brand new set of markers.

This works great for some alcohol markers, but I wouldn't try this on Copics. I ruined two of my markers by using this method and a worker at Blick said that Copics have a different ink barrel than other alcohol-based markers (I believe that Copic has pure ink, while a marker like prismacolors has an actual barrel, hence why my B29 completely exploded on my sink due to the pressure inside of the marker.

+PastelSharkie Copic actually sells refill ink "cartridges" for pretty cheap. You have to buy specific refill cartridges, as they are actual ink, but it costs less than an actual Copic pen, and you don't have to buy a whole new pen!

I only use Copics. While I am waiting for refills (because our budget means the refills even at Oozak are over $4/tube, I wait til I need them) I remove the chisel nib and only add about 2 to 3 drops of alcohol to the remaining ink. This buys me the time to get the refill. I use Copics all the time, weekly, for hours at a time, and have not allowed one to get as dry as the one in the video. But I definitely would not add more than 3 drops of alcohol to Copic ink barrels. Awful yours exploded!

Copic already has refills, so I recommend buying those instead of using rubbing alcohol, since the alcohol actually waters down the pigment.

You could probably mix different inks together with the alcohol, for extra pigmentation. There's no pigment in the tip, all of the marker has the same mix of alcohol and pigment. If you replenish both you'll have both at the same intensity.

I'd like to confirm this works for NeoPiko (/NeoPiko-2) markers. HOWEVER, be a smartie and open it from the brush tip end at the grey "twist here" looking area rather than pulling out the nibs. The broad-tip nib side doesn't have a cavity big enough to bother and the brush tip end will end up ruining your brush tip. xD

Technically Prismas are not refillable. This is more of a "reviving" technique. Once the pigment is fully gone from the marker then its gone. Copics get a lot of rave since they are refillable, have the biggest assortment of colors, and have a brush tip (which Prisma has now too). I have used both copics and prismas and I will more than likely choose prismas over copics any day (though shinhan over both in a heartbeat)

Prismacolor markers must work different than copic. Copic are filled with ink that soaks into the nib and flows out as you draw. You make it seem like the tip has the color and alchohol just 'carries' it.
@LEDanimator
@LEDanimator 12 жыл бұрын
@Angi197 It most likely wouldn't, because copics themselves are refillable and so you can just buy a bottle of ink that refills them about 6-15 times [depending on marker!]
