Had to the same type of repair on an HP DV-7 years ago. Left hinge screw inserts pulled out of the bottom pan so I just ran longer screws with washers and nuts all the way through the bottom. Not the most graceful repair but, I still have it and it never came back apart on me. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do!

Great work. Great inspiration - did a similar job on and MSI MS-16S2. Get a couple more years out of it.💸💸💸

Thank you i might try this method on my MSI GL63, still a good laptop, runs fine and i would rather find a way to repair the hinges than buy a new one

I like the SteamPUnk look better anyway. ;)

wow this is a nice idea! thanks! i fixed it 3 times already with epoxy glue and still broke, i really hate this hinge problems, will try this one as i think those laptop specs still good for the next 2 years. (was thinking to make this a HTPC/desktop PC tho) cosmetic wise, maybe it's nicer using black screws 😁

Bro.. it's cosmetic days are over. lol

Both of my hinges, while trying to figure out why my right fan started grinding like crazy....Not to mention the plastic and the whole thing would heat up and warp the bottom overtime.
@tristaaaaan15 күн бұрын
got the same as in the video. I had : 1 broken hinge 1 broken fan Keyboard LEDs dying screen bending Overheat (even though I replaced thermal paste and pads 2 times) 1 broken key Can't wait for the second hinge to fall off :)

It's an ugly fix; but seems to make it a lot sturdier than how it was before. Thanks for the share!

Mine just separated in the back. The two plastic pieces that are normally sealed together. No idea how to fix.

You can spray the nuts to match the back colour

How do you know if your laptop has an aluminum case?
@calholli2 ай бұрын
It would probably work just as well drilling through the plastic case. No worries

My MSI P65 8RD has the same problem😢, just happened yesterday. My P65 most of the plastic part are broken, they design it so bad :((((((

Why didn't you try to super glue it? One drop of glue on each of those studs would have permanently secured the hinge to the lid.
@calholli2 ай бұрын
I would have done both: Superglue all those broken pieces back together (if they still slid together and fit well-- maybe they didn't' anymore)-- and then I would have only drilled one bolt on each side; so the bolt would hold it all together and keep the glue strong. But either way, it turned out pretty solid.

it really annoys me how MSI laptops are designed to fail. For instance.. the KEYBOARDS.. some keys become unresponsive over time, or just fall off. You can't replace them, and you can no longer replace the damned keyboards because they have engineered them to make that impossible. The only way you can continue to use the laptop is with an external keyboard. Other things that stop working are the touchpads (use external pointer), the speakers start buzzing - use external speakers, and their warranties which are completely useless and don't cover anything. Oh, the fans are another issue.. they start making noise and not doing their job. It also amuses me that they put the serial number on the back of the computer.. with nothing but a strip of paper and some contact cement... that serial number is history after a few months. THEN they have the balls to put a security screw on the enclosure, so that if you ever want to updrade the RAM or the storage, you have just voided your warranty (which doesn't matter because the warranty is worthless anyway). If you are foolish enough to get a touchscreen.. you can count on that not working as well. To top it all off, they use a LOT of electricity, and their batteries never hold a charge for more than 30 minutes of use. The only good thing about MSI is PERFORMANCE and I like their displays.

Can I use pop rivets?
@calholli2 ай бұрын
Sure..
@rubenproost25522 ай бұрын
@@calholli I did, but the tool was too big so I did it from the outside with little washers on the inside but the stubs inside are too thick to allow the bezel to close so I hammered them flat but the shocks screwed up the screen. So for anyone going this route, no hammering, rather grind or use some other trick like put the sticks in the rivets the other way so the flat side is on the inside. The rivets do looks cool tho. Gives it a kind of industrial look.
@calholli2 ай бұрын
@@rubenproost2552 Next time you need to remove rivets: just take a drill bit to the flat side, with the hole. It very quickly just pops the little flat washer off and you can pull the rivet back out through the crimpled side. No hammering.

It's not just a matter of having to gou spend another couple grand for a new MSI laptop. Your new laptop is going to have the SAME problems... so you are stuck being Mr. Repairman when you buy an MSI.

i'll just remove the screen and use as a keyboard, fuck that shit laptops
