I was an electrician on Spruance class destroyers at Ingalls Shipyard back in the seventies. I wired many 3 position toggle switches for red and white lights. We also used blue and white lights in Combat Information Center (CIC). We used 3 tube fluorescent lights as described in the video. The 2 outer bulbs had their own ballast and the center bulb had its own separate ballast. The center bulb was an ordinary white bulb and we installed a plastic red or blue sleeve over the bulb to change its color. I don’t believe the 3 position toggle switch shown in the video is watertight. The rubber boot is simply to keep dirt and moisture out. The switch appears to be installed in a steel handy box with a steel cover. This type of box and cover is not watertight. On the Spruance class destroyers, we used the 3 position toggle switches for rooms with red and white lights and the on/off toggle switches for rooms that had white lights only. Both types of switches were installed in steel handy boxes with steel covers. This was not a watertight wiring method. I suspect that the New Jersey’s switches were similar. There were some watertight rotary snap switches used on the Spruance class destroyers in locations where the switch was likely to get wet. However, the majority of the switches were simple on/off toggles and 3 position toggles.

The Army went to blue lights in combat vehicles many years ago for some of the same reasons. Not only is it easier for the crew to see and read maps, it is much less noticeable at night to an enemy observer than red. Also if you are working on someone who is wounded blood is almost impossible to see under red light but it turns black under a blue light.

Reason behind red light is not saturating your rod cells used by night vision, you can go straight from a dull red lamp space to pitch black and see similarly well to if you'd had your eyes shut, while a bluer light will leave you totally blind for a couple of minutes till your eyes adjust. But in age of sail they literally used to sit in the dark, or cover one eye to try do the same thing, but that obviously inhibits other functions more. Red lights pretty horrible for trying to read maps ect though, and stands out against nature.

We worked all night to prove #2 generator was functional and operating correctly for acceptance trials in the AM (8 or 9am). When we went to run it for acceptance nothing happened no power. We troubleshot all daily even changing out the controller with another engine that was known good and accepted already, Finally, night comes on and as exhaustion sets in and we are at wit's end, it started again. Turns out the Shipyard found a power panel they thought was the correct one and added a circuit to power the controls for the new caterpillar diesel generator set. What they found was actually the waterline security light Panel, instead of the power panel just below it with a matching number. The Quarter deck watch turns on waterline lights at dusk and off at 7am from a Master switch on the Quarterdeck. The Electricians then were tasked with verifying EVERY power panel and that NONE had matching numbers. That was 20 yrs ago, I think they found 3 or 4 more Matching numbered panels Waterline and regular lights combinations

Well a light switch that's wiring backwards still works. I was an AE and we once wired a 3-phase gyro motor backwards on two of the wires. At first we didn't notice since the motor worked and we were able to calibrate it. However, on the CDI inspection, he noticed that the indicator the gyro controlled pointed the wrong direction (it was for a turn rate indicator that showed degrees per second so that's what we calibrated it to). One major safety risk with getting wiring backwards (on something like a toaster) is that part of the circuit is exposed and that needs to be the ground side. Otherwise if it's on a the live path of the circuit that's exposed, anything can easily become the ground of a circuit. This is why some American plugs (that don't have a neutral pin) will have one pin larger than the other so it can only be plugged in one direction to ensure that the device is safe.
@2009dudeman Жыл бұрын
@@Najolve Good points, another small aspect is which side is being switched (if that is relevant to a switched object) is that you must break the live side and not just the neutral or your entire circuit becomes live with no path to ground. So the light is off, but you still get shocked if you touch any metalwork that is in the normal electrical path. Found that one out trying to replace a bulb that busted and left the base in the socket...

The rotary switches are 'explosion proof', designed so that operation of the switch(es) will not cause ignition of flammable atmosphere outside of the switch, and flames cannot pass from inside the switch housing to the outside. These are very expensive to purchase. The "bat handle" 3-way ON-OFF-ON switches are also explosion proof. The residential/commercial-style toggle switches are not explosion proof, but are far less expensive (orders of magnitude) than the rotary switches, and available practically everywhere. The Hue lights came in handy when my girlfriend got a concussion and she couldn't tolerate blue lighting any longer. I think I’d be willing to make a donation to Battleship New Jersey if Ryan would just get a new microphone that always worked as well as the current mic worked for half this video.

Count me in for up to $50.

Yeah.. downside of lapel mics... they don't work so well when you have your head turned away from them. Most KZbinrs have better mics just off camera. That would probably be a pain for hauling around and setting up in different parts of the ship all the time, though. One better option would be more of a headset-style setup with a boom mic that hangs down from your ear. Same as what gamers and pilots use, except without the actual speakers over your ears. Those tend to work pretty well, since the mic stays beside your mouth regardless of how you turn your head.

@@vbscript2 In my years of doing the lighting and sound for school plays, I discovered that the best place for lavaliere microphones isn't on the "lapel," but at larynx, where the clavicles meet. Then you get good pickup no matter which way you turn your head.

I use blue, it's actually better for night adaptation (and you can actually _see_ things highlighted in/with red)

Were the house hold switches installed for the Marines?😉😉😁😁

How do you trust guys to fight a war if they can't consistently install light switches the right way? It's mindboggling.

What I think you are seeing there is the switch was damaged, or worn out, electrician came up, swapped it, it functions great onto the next thing. These were likely also some of the sailors aboard who wondered several times a day, why the F wasn't this fixed in the yard!?

Now you've got me wondering how you're powering the ship now, and what it took to convert it. Is that covered in another video?

Oh yeah, I use red lights around my home. I have one in the flood light, between my garage and house. This way I can see to walk between those buildings; but still have pretty decent night vision, when I'm working outside at night. And I also have a red light in a clip light, for the same reason. If I can convince my roommate, I'd also like to put some red light fixtures In the living room and mudroom.( the two rooms with an outside door)

Not sure if this has happened to anyone else. BUT! I’ve been subscribed for a few years and for some reason KZbin unsubscribed me right after your April fools video… just a heads up they’re purging your subscribers.
