I’ve seen a few forums recently discussing spliced HMPE soft goods for climbing such as dogbones, personal anchors, or even a system similar to BDs sewn anchor system. Any shot we can see some testing on those and the different splices they use?
@bobbbobins2 ай бұрын
The splices are strong AF and the testing has been done. I think it's more of a quality control and certification issue if people are splicing their own gear. For instance there's a guide from US Sailing on Dyneema / Spectra lifelines which references some testing. I say that as somebody who recently spliced lifelines for our sailboat, and now has a bunch of old dyneema lying around and I'm looking for applications where I need strong + light but nobody's life depends on it 😆

Do you want to break a bow string? I shot out my string and recently learned they are made from some sort of "proprietary UHMWPE".
@fvdeddrift2 ай бұрын
I'd be interested in that! I know the chemistry can make a difference in the general properties, but I bet bow string matierial has way less creep than yer typical UHMWPE/HMPE does for obvious reasons! Lol! GD, that's actually something I had never really thought about before! Hmmm, intriguing!

8:39 Another technique I learned from fishing cable is to run your e-tape parallel to the joint, so as to not peel tape wraps in tight corners or bends.

Worth fettling** the 2 edges of the W.H.A.C.K.ing hole in the Piton Hammer to a bigger radius so it is kinder to your dyneema? (**UK: abrade / file / dress away burr's sharp edges, or, the same to get an ill fitting assembly to mate)
@andrewv51042 ай бұрын
I've had better luck with painter's tape. Working small HMPE really highlighted how not great electrical tape works. I usually left the painters tape on my "improvised fid" and made 40 continuous loops before i needed to replace the 3" of tape. Not to save tape it was just faster and easier to reuse than to retape.

Nice! I made one a couple years ago for my hammer, but never got around to using it. I think I used 3mm SK78, considerably less strong, but for this application, shouldn't be an issue.

This is a great video. I do imagine a chain or wire rope would create a better shockload on the pin? How good is dyneema comparitively?

But is the WHACK functionally better for pulling pins? It's obviously lighter, smaller, compact, etc. You tested a peak force of ~9kN with the WHACK. How does that compare with a typical stranded wire funkness? How about with a grade 30 chain (i.e., an old timer I knew claimed chain pulled better than stranded steel cable?

Im going to forge this hammer and send it to you for testing. Where can i send it to??
@bertilbusch2 ай бұрын
looks nicer if you taper it and put the two tapers in the same section of "cover", so as one tapers out and becomes thinner, the other deadend tapers in to become thicker. Overall the crosssection is close to constant

why doint you make a piton fall test? I can only find a video how much force it takes to pull out a piton straight out but not in the direction of a fall

Why not use a big lever? like a 1.5m carbon fiber tube with a saw tooth in one side (to varie the leverage of the puling cable)
@huntergibson93592 ай бұрын
you still need the hammer to place the piton. So if you are already carrying a hammer it and it works well for removal, why carry another piece of gear?
@TknJn2 ай бұрын
I Suspect the lever will not generate the impulse that really to overcome the 'micro springiness' and stiction of the piton in rock. CF impactor v's telescopic wrench / breaker bar for getting wheel nuts / bolts off.

@simonsimon98802 ай бұрын
Did you test a traditional steel cable funkness? What sort of forces will it generate, compared to the dyneema?
@northmanlogging27692 ай бұрын
so totally not the point of this vid... but cable/wire rope, will almost always break where its swaged, or where its been spliced, ironically making the "farmers eye" splice one of the strongest eye splices... also known as a Flemish eye... only problem is the loose ends are not really secured, so they can unravel... the first bending point in the splice/swage being the weakest point, anyway most folks would never trust a "farmer" eye because its not "secured" but they do work incredibly well, just have to be careful with the loose strands unraveling

- Another rope trick is making a single end Brummel eye splice - not so easy to do so with hammer installed... A Sewn brummel - or bury - after proof loading- is nearly invisible and almost "infinitely" bomber...

Why not just use paracord? A lot cheaper than Dynema
@TheRPhelps242 ай бұрын
My guess is that paracord is too stretchy and absorbs the shock too much so you don't get as much force to pull the peton out
@andrearea2132 ай бұрын
Aren't most paracord diameters going to break below the max force he was funking at when tied in a knot?
@thecatofnineswords2 ай бұрын
As said at 4:00, just like nylon it stretches too much, and that'll absorb too much energy.
@kadmow2 ай бұрын
- you don't get the cool splicing shots... - mostly a joke - NB the dyneema is multiples of times (high) more expensive than accessory cord - yes wealerthan similarly sized also - and yes the tight "Kernmantle" construction is more difficult to splice (not impossible, but it is harder to get the outside into the inside... ...than 12 plait dyneema..
