I have developed a habit of duplicating items and altering the new version after hiding the original. It's a clunky way of doing things but it helps.

My thought exactly! Duplicate as a workaround until they add Non-Destructive Editing. Considering that GIMP is free, one must adapt to the limitations of the software!

Non-destructive editing is planned (currently has a GIMP 3.2 milestone). And a lot of other improvements. GIMP 3 will feature non-destructive layers and filters. Most of GIMP 3 is already done. :) So while GIMP has been kinda the same for a long time (talking long-term here), a lot has been happening lately. And its future looks pretty bright (as they're also cleaning up the code and making it easier to maintain and add new features). So if that' is what's preventing you from using GIMP, then you have something to look forward to. :) They've completely rewritten the engine as well as a bunch of other huge changes. It might look the same, but there's so much work done by the developers that is invisible to the user, but is so necessary and meaningful in the long-term. Work that enable things like non-destructive editing and much more. :)

are you serious and sure? coz seriously i need to smile now
@gung-hochang95732 ай бұрын
@@lawmc7619 I'm serious. :) Though, nobody knows for sure when stuff will happen. Patience is key. :) The devs have a lot of work to do in many different parts of this large piece of software. But there's reason to be optimistic. There's so many awesome things coming from the Linux world currently and GIMP 3 is one of them. Especially the last few years has been a blast and KDE Plasma deserves a mention. Anyway, I'm currently using GIMP 2.99.19 (unstable release of GIMP 3) and it actually works better than GIMP 2 for me (and the improvements are pretty nice). I'm running it on Fedora 40 KDE Plasma Spin. GIMP 2.99.19 installs via a simple `sudo dnf install gimp3 -y` command in case you or others run Fedora. It's available in other repos for other distros and I assume there's an unstable package on Flathub. We got non-destructive filter effects on layers in 2.99.18 and it has been further improved in 2.99.19. Non-destructive filter effects works as expected for me. And I haven't had any other problems. Disclaimer: You should still expect there to be bugs. Probably many (even though my experience has been smooth). Expect it to break and crash. And don't trust important work with it. Unless you want to run the risk of losing unsaved work or having it crash. There are people who are daily driving it at this point, but it is actually an unstable release so don't be surprised or disappointed if you experience problems. For all we know, we're just lucky with the combination of system OS, drivers and hardware. For those who are on Windows there is no download for 2.99.19 on the "development downloads site" but only 2.99.18. It's possible to build it via a git job on their repo. I have no idea how it runs on Windows. My experience has been that it's not as stable and performant on Windows. But I don't have Windows anywhere now so I can't say how it'll run there. Regarding what the future holds. There's a category for non-destructive editing called NDE in the dev repo. And specifically the feature of NDE image layers (equivalent of Photoshop's Smart Objects) has a git issue with the label "milestone 3.2". Some stuff has come earlier than expected and will come as a minor update to 3.0, but don't expect NDE image layers to come before 3.2. It might even be postponed (who knows). If it does come earlier, take it as a positive surprise. That way you won't get disappointed. So yeah, there's a clear intention for NDE features in GIMP. When stuff will happen, I don't know. There are so many aspects of this software and the rewrite that require development efforts. It's honestly impressive what they have built and are building as a free and open source software that depends on donations and voluntary work. ^^, I'm stoked about its future. I think it's time I donated to the project. I've been using GIMP casually for probably 20 years now. To be honest, I'm kinda embarrassed over not having donated at least something at this point.

Did you know that gimp version 2 first release back in 2004? Gimp development has been stagnent for many years and barely moves to version 3. Just imagine the simple background removal we are still stuck with the old traditional method using larso tool. We constantly need to look for 3rd party app to do quick fix for a simple task.

@gung-hochang95732 ай бұрын
You aren't really being fair here. It might not look like they've done much, but trust me they have. Rewriting the entire engine is just one example. GIMP 3 is nearly done (you can use it now but it'll be buggy and not entirely done, although I've seen people using it in production). I'd still advice people to wait for the final release, but if you're aware of specific bugs and "blockers" then it could work well right now, depending on use-case (obviously, if you depend on certain features that currently has bugs in the WIP GIMP 3, then it wouldn't be a good idea probably). I remember using GIMP 15 years ago. Many aspects seem the same or similar on the surface. But even the latest GIMP 2 release is nothing like the old GIMP. Version 2.8 and 2.10 have bigger changes than other apps tend to have between ver. 2.0 and 3.0. Once the ground work is done, the development pace picks up. A lot of fundational work has been done simply in order to make it easier to maintain and add new features and improvements. That work is easy to take for granted for a user. It would be a shame if people gave up on GIMP after all the work and effort they've put into it. Most of which you won't be able to see the effect of before GIMP 3 and you'll continue to see coming into effect in future releases. That's when all of the behind the scenes foundation work really will be worth it. Also remember they are relying on donations as this software is completely free and open source unlike Adobe's buggy and expensive and anti-consumer products. GIMP is really the long-term software to cheer for. Just like Blender and Krita are software for professionals, I can see GIMP (and kdenlive) becoming the same (if people look out their window and start paying attention to other stuff as well instead of throwing money on the same old software companies that don't deserve it, then we have a bright future ahead).

Not yet. ;) I'd advice you to keep an eye of how GIMP is improving once in a while. GIMP 3 will be great and GIMP 3.2 will see some cool improvements also (probably non-destructive editing). I saw mentions of "smart object" in a git issue (with milestone 3.2). Non-destructive editing has its own label, so it's clear they're interesting in this aspect. So much ground work has been done in order to enable things like this. The entire engine is rewritten and so are other aspects of it as well.

Yeah, if you immediately realize you need to change its size. But if you continue to edit and later on realize you have to change the scale of things, you can't. Not without potentially losing a lot of work you actually want to be there. At this point the easiest thing would be to re-paste it. But what if you made changes to it? Then you need to do all that all over again. Good news is that GIMP 3.2 will probably support non-destructive editing. GIMP 3 will support non-destructive layers and filters. Even before GIMP 3, there has been so much rewriting and changes that is invisible to the user, but is what paves way for the future. I really hope people donate to the developers because right now GIMP's future is looking really bright.

I know it's kind of a meme that GIMP takes forever to get done, but let's be fair here, GIMP 3 is not far away from release and there's been so much work for the purpose of making it easier to maintain and add new features. They rewrote the entire engine and many other aspects of it. Remember that they rely on donations for funding. The software is free and looking at the kind of work they've been doing, are doing, and will be doing - I'm pretty excited about its future. Looking at their roadmap will give you a hint of what's to come. It doesn't show everything, of course, and doesn't show all the work they've been doing, but it gives you an idea of where it's heading and what you can expect compared to GIMP 2.
