Cover those containers with a UV stable sheet of plastic. I've had a few mates over here in Australia used them around the house and they can get brittle and shatter as soon as they're dropped or hit. Australia - we do sunlight very well.

Agree with the UV comment. Another reason is to reduce the chance for algae growth inside. Take away the light and it won’t grow as fast

Great advice Chickanic. Last year we bought a solar generator and have used it 3 times keeping the freezer, fridge AND COFFEE POT going. We actually are preppers but hope that day never comes. Lots of advantages to having cattle, chickens, gardens, canning equipment and food preservation. If that day ever happens the rural folks better thank the second amendment because they will need it.

Historical note: The Carrington event in 1859 killed one telegraph operator and started fires in several telegraph offices. The telegraph wires acted as antennas, generating destructive electrical power from the passing charged subatomic particles. It was a perfect storm of strong coronal mass ejections which happened to be aimed directly at earth, coupled with a vulnerable strength and orientation of the earth's protective magnetic field. A similar event today would be catastrophic. Fascinating (and award winning) read: The Sun Kings: The Unexpected Tragedy of Richard Carrington and the Tale of How Modern Astronomy Began, by Stuart Clark.

1st Saturday of every month, at high noon, when they test the tornado sirens, I fire up the generator and run it under load for 1 hour. This lets me know that it's ready and able to go. (I test it with the sirens going off so the generator is used to the sound and doesn't get all upset during the real thing) 😁

In addition to running all my small engines dry before storing them, I drain the float bowl. I've found that small amount of residual fuel if left in the bottom of the float bowl will create havoc on carburetors. Thankfully, my generator and ATV's have a drain screw that makes this final step a breeze. On my smaller lawn mower and edger engines, I remove and replace the bowl the bowl itself after emptying it completely and wiping out whatever's left.

In colder states that old oil will help soak the wood a bit to really help the wood start burning is some fuel is in the oil but not too much. Some people or business in colder states will have oil burning heaters. One auto repair shop uses oil oil to heat it. Make sure that water tank outside is covered or painted dark to avoid algie growth. Very good video with preps idea with lot of logic in this day in age. They can't make treated wood like the old days. The old treated wood will still rot just like to new treated wood will do

Great job. I agree 100%, get your generator out, run it for 15 minutes, hook it up to the house, throw the main, MAKE SURE IT WORKS. If it works, awesome. If not, you have time to get parts, do whatever you have to do, to make it right.... Now, the electrician who wired up my outside plug for the generator was really good, and gave me a lot of info.... I'll try to keep this short, but if this helps someone, it's worth it. By the way, he works for a whole house generator company.... That's all he does, all day every day, is put in those big whole house deals for people.... So he knows generators. Also, I went through Hurricane Ian, and learned a lot from that, so..... #1 if you have a "dual fuel" generator, do your test run on propane. then you don't have to pull the carb, flush it out, all that stuff.... Propane never goes bad. So I have a gasoline supply, and I have a propane supply, just in case.... Propane tanks also have a date on them, and a service life.... If the tank is too old, no one will fill it. So if you are buying tanks, CHECK THAT DATE. That manufactured date should be RECENT. Like now, would be ideal, but if it's Feb 2024, that's fine. I wanna say the tank can no longer be used 12 years after that date of MFG..... I could be wrong though, check that for yourself.... So if you found a bunch of tanks on Marketplace, CHECK THAT DATE. It doesn't matter how perfect they look.... No one will fill it after that date. So, the price you pay, should be adjusted down a lot, if it's an older tank.... #2 If your generator won't run your whole house, prioritize properly. Refrigerators and freezers MUST be on a generator. All that "freeze bottles of water" and all the rest of that is crap. You might have 1 day, before you have a lake on your floor, from everything melting & thawing..... In a warm hurricane climate, you probably don't need the water heater. Huge power suck. And you'll be under a boil order anyways, so don't use it. You need the refrigerators, freezers, stove, and some lights. If you feel you need more, buy a bigger generator. You'd also like to be able to recharge your phones, your battery banks, your backup power batteries, all that stuff.... Streamlight flashlights... You name it. Being able to recharge tool batteries, and all the stuff I mentioned, will GREATLY ease your anxiety..... A flashlight & a decent headlamp are musts in a power outtage.... #3. Be careful running your big screen, or your expensive home theater, and stuff like that.... Your generator is probably not putting out pure perfect 60Hz pure sine wave perfect voltage, like the power company does..... You might fry it.... If you have concerns, don't run it. Or if you have to, put a UPS battery backup between the wall outlet and the monitor, or any equipment.... The UPS, and how it works, will somewhat clean up that power.... #4 In a post disaster world, be careful. Don't injure yourself. The ER is closed. There is NO help. So be careful, and have a LOT of First Aid gear on hand.... Help is not coming..... If you are on medications, do whatever you have to do to have a really good 30 days at least stockpile of all those meds..... Nobody is coming to bring you your heart meds, or blood pressure pills, or your immunotherapy pills, or whatever.... #4b I would maintain a high level of vigilance, in a post disaster world. I'm talking about things you can't talk about on KZbin. Maintain a high posture of alertness & readiness. Take no chances with your personal security & the security of your family & friends..... I could go on & on.... TLDR, you need a generator. Figure it out, do some research, get a generator. Get the plug wired to your house, so you don't have 10 extension cords going all over the place..... Make sure you are VERY clear on which switches to flip in your electrical panel box.... Take pictures, make notes, stick that to the wall right next to the panel, so that when you need it, and you are stressing, it's right there.... Several of my neighbors, I was helping them get their generators running, they were very honest, they said "Look, I had this put in 3 years ago, he showed me how to do it.... I really have no recollection of what he said..." So, don't be that guy, write it down... Take pictures during your test run, so you know "This is how the switches were"..... there's gonna be anxiety. You will be out of sorts. You will not be super chill and loving life at that moment.... Put the instructions on the wall, so that an 8 year old could do it.... So watch this video 2 more times, and then watch the related videos 2 or 3 times each, and then go get a generator.....

I am a huge fan of Propane generators, or gennys that use gas and propane or natural gas. Propane is so much easier to buy, transport, and store when you have a major disaster. Maybe I've been lucky but I've had it for over 10 years, and it still starts on one pull and I get about 12 hours from a bottle/can.

I am surprised how few rain water tanks i see on US you tube videos. Just about everyone has them where i come from. It was actually mandated that new houses had to have them for quite a few years when we had an extensive drought in the 2000's. It isnt required now, but water prices are certainly high enough to make it worthwhile to have them anyway.

Great video. Good information. Maybe for future video ideas you can include the propane kits for retrofitting existing generators and the option of dual fuel capable new ones to help avoid fuel varnished carbs. I saw another good option also for seldom used engines to drain the tank and bowl, then pour a quart of atf along with a fuel preservative with vci in it. Turn over the engine enough to pull the ATF into the main jet. It will act like a preservative for the carb so when it's needed later, you can drain the ATF and refill the tank and start easy.

I don't understand people who have back-up generators but NEVER exercise them except when that are needed! My wife and I lived in our 28 foot bumper pull camper while we finished out our working career. I had a 4000 watt generator to run the camper in the summer, if the power went out and a 800 watt, 2 stroke generator, to run it in the winter (frig, heater and hot water running on propane) in the winter. I would and still do "exercise" those generators once a quarter, under load, for 15 minutes. I then close the fuel shut off valve and let the carb run out of fuel. Our retirement house has a "whole house" generator. It is only a 100 amps so I cannot be running the clothes dryer, water heater, and stove/oven with the heat pump but I can manage that. It runs a exercise program once a week for 5 minutes to keep everything lubed and ready to run. It is propane so I don't have to worry about the fuel going bad. I just need to make sure I don't run out!

I also had to get a GenTent, because it really is 50/50 on whether it will be raining or not during a power outage. It's a good to occasionally refamiliarize with how that accessory connects to your generator, and I'd go ahead and run a speed drill for proper set up.

You can probably go longer. I bought a blown-up generator 20 years ago. It was a 7500 with a B&S engine. It was used for house construction power. They let the oil get too low and it blew. The crankcase was ok so I bought it for $50. $75 in parts and some precision work by my fingers and a very chisel to get the aluminum off the steel crankshaft and I had it back in action. For me to do it wasn't so bad. If I were doing it as a job the hours I put into it would have run the cost way up. Getting the armature off the crankshaft was a lot of fun. When I had things lined up just right it popped off. Otherwise, it's on there. I have used that generator a whole lot over the years. What I always do is when I'm done with it let it run a little with no load to start cooling it down. Then turn the gas line off and let it suck all that gas out of the carb. Sometimes that engine has gone 4 or 5 years without being used. Turn the gas back on and she fires right up. No problem. In other years like last year, I used that generator a whole lot. It's stored in my garage towards the door so I can get it out if I need it. I've always used ethanol-free whenever I could get it. For a while, it was just about impossible to get ethanol-free. They called it "Substandard gasoline." That's because the standard has ethanol.

When I run mine monthly I have a box fan to pull some wattage and I have it blowing toward the generator to disburse fumes further. I use sta-bil in every can of fuel as soon as I get home from the gas station. It saves equipment that either sit unused or break down and get set in the corner and forgotten. I do use my generator to run my welder so it gets at least occasional use all year. But from November-may it gets 5w30 oil and I make sure to have the tank full and 5 gallon ready. Even in 15*F temps my powermate fires up in 3 pulls or less plus it gets regular oil changes, 5w30 in cold months and 10w40 in the warm months. Mostly we use it for lighting and the refrigerator during outages but in longer winter outages I have a pigtail that I wire into the furnace. We went through a 5 or 6 year period when every time either the Daytona 500 or the Super bowl were just about to start we'd lose power, back then the generator was stored in our kart racing trailer and was a pain to get to, and fiddley to start because it had sat since September. Ever since the second consecutive year of that happening it lives on the back porch and always gets started at least every couple of months. Fuel stabilizer is KEY. Keep the air away from the fuel and life is good. Keep tanks as full as possible during storage for optimal results.

Best advice is always run your gas powered equipment out of gas if your not using is for a wile and keep fresh gas on hand in the garage that way your always using fresh fuel. Just put the slightly older stuff in your car and burn it. Your vet can use most 4 cycle gas without problems if its still smells good.

Great video. I would like to toss in 2 notes. If you get a solar generator, get one like Oupes that has LiFePO4 battery chemistry. All of the things you see catching fire in the news use NMC or similar chemistry. And as someone who has used and repaired cedar raised beds for 20 years I recommend taking a look at the enameled metal ones. I am switching over and love them. Just look for a good manufacturer.

Love watching your channel, you have helped me out so much, getting back into small engines. I'm in UK, I could say so many positives about your last video...... I'm not going too deep as alot say I'm a conspicuous......lol But I do truly think the WEF is behind alot of mystery things that's happening round world, all since COVID bs. As for your waist oil ect.....why not get a waist oil burner for your workshop or house?? Just to add with small Genny's......the capacitor sometimes fails too..... So like you, pull cord, carb, spark plugs and capacitor in a Genny first aid box.

I keep my tank empty and put 1 - 2 quarts of gasoline in it every 3 months. I run it with varying loads, no - full load until totally out of gas. Been doing this to this and the last generator I owned and they have NEVER failed to start and run. I sold the last generator when I got a whole house generator but soon learned that was a mistake! Needed a back up for it!!! It's on my calendar to run every three months!

Apocalypse now!!! My city was hit by a tornado many years ago. It pretty much flattened the entire electrical system. So, we were without power until that could all be rebuilt. We cooked outside on the grill and went to bed when it became dark. It was hot sleeping upstairs (no AC) but apparently we were too lazy to move the bed to the basement. I remember going to work wearing a hardhat, carrying a canteen and a flashlight. About the biggest problem I suffered during this ordeal was flat tires. So, my advice is, if you want to prepare for a tornado, buy run flats.

I’ve had a generator for about 15 years and when it’s needed, it works great. We had an electrician install a bypass switch and we can power the entire house. A big mistake I made was leaving old gas in the tank. After replacing the carburetor, I now add fuel stabilizer to the gas and I also start the generator generator every 2 weeks. Haven’t had any problems since I started this practice.

I have the same set up. At breaker box I flip switch from power company to off, then switch for line from generator to on. However, the large cable that connects the generator to the breaker box has two ends and I am not sure if it matters which end goes to machine and which goes to plug-in box. Do you have such a cable and does it make a difference? TYA for response.

Speaking of generators, it's a good idea to remind people to check/change the oil at the recommend intervals. I have heard of instances when the grid goes down for extended periods, people rush out to buy a new generator. Take it home, fill up with oil and fuel, then pull the rope. They don't shut it down, just top up the fuel and keep it running. Then they can't understand why after 5 or 6 days of continuous running, the engine blows up.

The EF2 went within 2000ft of us. The police were proactive about it and if you don't live back there, ya don't get to go see back there. Our generator ran fine. Non-ethanol gas with seafoam is all I use. AC, freezer, two refrigerators, tv, lights, and power to spare. Home oxygen concentrator and C pap machine all run on electric. Happy mother's Day, Bre. As a Boy Scout or firefighter always be prepared. Generator, chain saw, fresh clean fuel, an abundance of spring drinking water.

Hang in there girl. Yes millions have generators sitting around. But remember after we get things going we need to think about generator placement. I've seen people run there generator inside somewhere and either get sick or die from carbon dioxcide poisoning let alone putting card board near or on the generator making it get too hot. What ever its a very serious event. Excellent having a spare carberator. Most of all generators need preperation and safe practices. I installed many Y2k generators with transfer switches from 10 hp or 4,000 what to 100 hp and 2,500 amps. Botom line is generators are very serious.

I have a Champion 5500 running watt generator and once a month I run it for 20 minutes as the manual requires. Occasionally it gets run when there is a local power outage due to storms or other reasons. Stabilizer in the fuel For shutdown the manual says turn off the fuel and let run until it stops. Empty carburetor means no stale fuel or varnish buildup. It's 7 years old and still runs perfectly. Got me through 3 Hurricanes and several Tropical Storms. I'm in South Carolina.

Prioritize your back-up power use. Make a list like: basement sump pump, refrigerator, limited lights, well pump, entertainment, fans, . This helps you work through the tradeoffs between the size of the generator you can afford and what you really need.

Yeaaaaars ago I added a drain line from the tank on my generator so it's never stored with gas in it and I always run it out of fuel at the carb. I have a spare carb (plus a rebuild kit for the original), spare plug, spare ignition module, dedicated can of ether, and a cover. I normally stock 10-20 gallons of ethanol-free fuel that I cycle out every 6 months. I feel I'm reasonably ready to go...

Hi Chivkanic BOILING FULE : I have a 6500watt petrol generator with the 5 gallon fuel tank that is mounted directly above the engine ( it covers the full top frame area ) as most of them do. After about 45 minutes of running I turned it off . To my surprise the petrol was boiling in the gas tank, from the heat of the engine. I have since fixed the problem by raising the fuel tank 3” and placing an aluminium heat shield under the entire tank. Just thought I would shear my experience and simple fix to an extreme hazard. Hope this helps you and others. Great content, Cheers from New Zealand.

As a retired professional firefighter for 30 years I will tell you to get them damn gas genset's away from the house and feed them into a transfer switch, been to at least a half dozen house/garage fire's and countless CO poisonings from improperly placed unit's. and as you know gravity fed genset's are the worst for leaking and dumping gas on the ground. be safe 😉👍🏻

Suggestions: Always keep the gas tanks full with a stabilizer of your choice. Run the generator (Under Load!!) an hour or so every other month. With regular maintenance (read the instruction book and do what it says...) and use every couple months, you should limit any generator problems.

You are right people need to tend to their equipment weather it's needed or not. I'm lucky in that I have access to non ethanol gas but I still drain the gas , remove the bowl and blow the carb out so nothing is in there. Does this help? The generator is 25 years old and still starts first pull every time and is needed 3 or 4 times a year so yes I like to think so.

I have a 4500 Coleman generator that is set to 3600 RPM and never cuts back. My main use would be to keep the outside water furnace running and not freezing. We have a few Kerosun heaters around. That Coleman Genset has always been a rude crude loud monster. We took a bit of extra money before the great inflation, so we went to Harbor freight and bought a 3500 quiet genset. It cuts back and fires up easily. So quiet that you can hold a conversation . Throw that puppy in the detached but open air garage and keep the home fires burning Got it on sale and got additional ten percent off to get a Harbor Freight credit card and Used that to buy a few things but paid it off with no interest. Then they bought a Genset up to the front with a banged up box. I said that I would take it if they discounted and noted the damaged box so I could return it if the Genset was damaged. They took off sixty dollars more. Those fancy gensets need to be started at least once a month and has taken out of them and run through the old pickup trucks on occasion. A bit of Berryman's added to the gas is not horrible either
