My biggest watch buying tip when using eBay (or any other auction site), is the "art of shilling". When a seller uses another account name to artificially drive up the price by bidding against you or others. Be aware, be careful. Otherwise, happy bidding! There are some very great deals to be had. Great content Oleg! I'm happy to have your content because you have to deal with the Canadian perspective of the sites (eBay, import duties, shipping times, etc.)

Hello. I have a 1965 Omega 560 cal. I love this watch but I think I have a knockoff Omega brand leather band. I want an authentic Omega band or at least an authentic clasp/buckle without spending a bunch for it but sometimes I can't distinguish the real bands from the fakes. Thanks!

Good video, I just lost an auction yesterday for a vintage watch by submitting my bid with about 45 seconds to go. I thought it would win but someone else outbid me with 5 seconds to go, I hit the automatic bid button but that turned out to be below the counter-bid. On further reflection I think the watch wasn't in quite as good of a condition as I would have liked and at least the other guy payed almost $800 more than he thought he would.

My tip would be to look at the other potential buyers numbrr of purchases. If you think a watch is going cheap, it is a good sign when the heavy hitters think so as well. I was bidding on a very rare seiko that looked terrible but it sold for $459 to a guy with over a thousand feedback.

This guy was selling two automatic watches in car boot sale for €25. He was offered €15 only, but diden't sell. He went to a jeweller who told him to sell them on eBay. He got €160 for one and €85 for the other. Theres very few bargains to be got on eBay watches. They had to pay the postage as well. Really top price.

Last second is where it’s at, but be sure to bid your MAX max, because if another bidder came in end just a dollar or two higher than your bid, they’ll win and you won’t have a chance to go higher. Probably a good thing to stay unemotional about the bidding process, too, so you don’t get tempted to keep inching up beyond what you logically feel your max amount is. Never understood people who get into bidding wars with days left in an auction.

Hi Ray, I thought this might be a suitable spot to put another "tip" out there for thought. I think both of you have the right idea for "snipping" when you want to win that special auction on eBay. It really is probably the best way to grab that item. My biggest problem is the systemic "shilling" that happens within the watch auction community of eBay. Many private sellers are bidding against themselves and a single bidder to artificially drive up the price of their watch. Just food for thought. Regards.

Great tips, the only one I don’t agree with is the number of reviews. If they are all positive, 60 reviews are plenty enough! Even 10 are fine if the price is fair. Otherwise, if everybody only buy from sellers with 100+ reviews, how is the seller able to build up any number of reviews?
@Gary-Seven-and-Isis-in-19683 жыл бұрын
Just one question. How do you deal with automatic bids or hidden maximum bids from other bidders that you are trying to win against. You cannot find out how much they've set their max bid at, so is it best not to bid at all once you've discovered that they have set up automatic bidding with eBay? In my experience some people are clinically insane and set a max bid at way above what the item is worth just because of their own "I must Win it" mentality.

You are likely correct about everything here but, I am an ebay seller and I can tell you, you are a lot safer now than in years past. I did buy a camera once that had been in water, (Film, not digital) but was total JUNK. everything rusted or corroded together. A "Door stop" I took it as experience and let it go. In the last few years, they now hold your money for ? 30 days I think. THEY tell you when your money is released to you giving the buyer time to receive and agree the deal is OK for not. I have never cheated anyone but lets face it, they are out there. I am just saying, as a buyer, you are safer than ever now. Cheers, Mike Austin, the Cincinnati Kid.

I've done this with sellers I have a bit of a relationship with. Sometimes I will notice that they have the items I'm shopping for at a far higher price than the average price, in which case I will low ball a little bit. Usually, it works out. I know it can put up a bit of a wall, but sometimes I've been able to get a screaming deal, I don't do it to be rude or anything just if I see it's way higher than the rest and I know the seller at least a little.

Ebay feedback does not necessarily provide a true picture. You can have a terrible experience with a seller, spend hours going round and round with the seller and ebay to get your money back and ebay will remove the bad feedback you left if they are able to force the seller to return your money. This is exactly what happened to me with an expensive vintage watch purchase that went bad. There is no warning left that you are dealing with a crook. If a seller lists an item as no return ebay locks you out from trying to return that item or open a case even if you have been cheated. You have to use a work around at that point and hope an ebay person rather than the ebay software notices it.

Low-balling is perfectly ok if you send a polite message along with your offer explaining why your offer is low. Usually because the asking price is unreasonably high. Myibidder for last minute bids on eBay. Knowing how many watchers you're competing with can give you a clue to how many bids may come in for an item. There are many tools out there that can achieve this, a quick Google search will get you to one. Looking up what sort of average percentage a seller has previously accepted on items can give you an idea of what the lowest figure they will accept on something you may be looking to buy. I'm sure there's plenty more, but I need to go for pee pee now...

I have noticed there are a number of e bay sellers misrepresenting watches as NEW, when they are really USED. There are ways you can tell a watch is used from the pictures. One way to tell is, if a link or links have been removed from the bracelet. Look to see if the date complication looks out of alignment etc. Look for the obvious such as scratches and dirt, plus missing packaging... Don't let those liars put it over you. Also don't assume pictures that look too commercialized are of the actual watch the bidder will get...
