This is late, but I have advice to anyone working a call center. It's advice that saved my ass, AND 4 other people over span of year working there. Always. ALWAYS. Record every single conversation you have with every single manager and employee at work. Save emails and correspondence too. There is a 75% chance you will eventually get fired for a reason that's illegal. There's a very high chance at some point manager will let slip this reason too. Record that bit, and you have an insta-win lawsuit (They will settle literally same day you reveal that recording. Always do because they know it's a loss in court). I won 60k, my friend won 100k. And I hear the other 3, whom I don't know personally, won a combined 400k or sumthin like that. If cellphones aren't allowed at work (usually for that very reason), buy a cheapo mini recorder, even better if it's like an MR80 or sumthin else that's voice activated. Honestly, this advice applies to any job that you have no protections with, aka, most unskilled labor. (If anyone is curious, I was fired because I had to go to chemotherapy. Yep. Super moral and upstanding people running Verizon.)

I live in a city where call centres are one of the only industries so I didn't have much choice. It wasn't actually the worst job I've had. After 18 months, I moved into a real 9 to 5 office job and I've been there for 2 and a half years now.

After I had JUST gotten my diploma for graphic design, I applied for a job at a call center. I was told by the interviewer, trainer and manager that after six months I could apply for an in-house graphic arts position. After my six months were up, I asked where I could apply for a graphic arts position. I won't say they laughed at me but they certainly had a good snicker at it. There was never an in-house graphic design job and I was straight-up lied to about it. I needed a job so I stayed... for three years. "How did you get out?" you may be wondering. That is a legitimately sad story. You see, I live with my brother, his wife and their son (since about 5 years ago when the child was born). Less than a year ago now, my brother's wife died in a car accident. Work said she wasn't family and refused to give me any time for grievance or to go to her funeral. I quit (as you do). I will never work in one if those shit holes again.

Yortle Bluzzgubbly - My ex-wife was brought to the brink by working at the AOL call center years ago. She literally cried before and after Ever. Single. Shift. Even though we desperately needed a second income at the time (but she had zero fucking skills), I couldn't bear seeing it, so I finally told her to just fucking quit and picked up another job myself. I was so concerned that it was _actually_ going to mentally damage her that working (and I'm not kidding) 17-19 hours a day seemed the better choice. Yep. I worked in a call center from 2015 to 2021. Just this past September, with some stroke of dumb luck, I _finally_ managed to land a job as a front-end developer. Working in a call center was awful, and not only did it nearly pigeon-hole my career, but it also made me gain a lot of weight, start drinking a lot and falling into depression. During the final few months, I actually went to therapy and was considering getting on anti-depressants because my mental/emotional state was really that bad. For anyone younger that's reading this comment, if you're just graduating from your final year of college and you're looking to start your work career, do yourself a favor: *Stay away from help desk jobs or phone support jobs. It damages you.*

After that, I went into the support job for 6 years, so that was really my first full-time job in the tech field. I interviewed at about a dozen different places and mostly got rejections because I just simply didn't have the coding experience. I was coding a lot on the side and doing websites for my parents and myself, along with some small side projects I whipped up in HTML. Showed those around to other interviewers and finally landed the dev job I have now. I'm honestly still debating how much my degree actually helped. Lol

They showed me the paperwork we had to do at the end of each shift to count up the products, and they didn't show me how to do it, they just said "do the paperwork." And then got mad when I completely failed. Later I got a job at the same company but different department, and they showed me how to do the paperwork step by step, and it turns out it was incredibly easy with training.

As someone who's worked as a "trainer", trust me when I say, it's a hell of a lot more soul crushing than you think. My whole time working at the call centre, from the beginning up till becoming a trainer, I was applying for any job I could, I was just heavily unlucky and Somehow kept the job that long, suffering through working on the phones, yet as a trainer, I broke in 2 weeks and quit. The shit they expect you to do is horrible. Not only do they expect you lie, but, at least the one I worked at, they expect you take notes on fucking _everything_ and _anything_ about the applicants that I can. I'm talking about hair colour to how they react to certain words. Fucking words! We had to to take notes on anything they say and also we had to try and figure out if any have disabilities or not. I mean they frame it as "getting to know those who'll be working there" but It's fucking disgusting. I've been through a load of shitty things, but this, even I couldn't take. Oh, and we still also get restrictions on basic human liberties. If we miss something, like if someone was lazier than we may have noticed, that's points off. If someone ever stutters, and we didn't note it down, that's points off. You'd think once you get off the phones, you'd be more secure. Wrong, that ammo they keep when we're on the phones, if we aren't fired then, it can and probably will be used when we get promoted, if not to fire us, then to "put pressure" on us to work harder. Now I don't know how far they may go with that shit, cause I was only a trainer for 2 weeks, but from what I did see, it's inhumane.

Worked in a call center for almost 3 years. I got sucked into the abyss of working-from-home. It was too convenient to quit, but made me just miserable enough to hate myself. I eventually got fired because my internet issues made me miss too much work. It was a god-send. Thank you Comcast and your garbage service. (They came out 8 times one week and didn't fix it.) Yes, call centers are ALL LIKE THAT, every single one of them... I've worked at a few in my time, and it's hard to believe they're still allowed to operate like this, especially in today's political climate of anti-bullying, it's an incredibly stressful job, I've seen so many people go through mental break downs, start physical fights with managers, people getting so angry they destroyed their workspace, throw chairs around, put their fist through their monitors etc... I even witnessed one guy drive his little piece of shit Hyundai Accent through the front doors of the building attempting to get at one of the higher up managers... Do yourselves a favor and avoid working in call centers, it's a shit job that doesn't pay anywhere near as well as it should considering the amount of shit you have to take from both managers and customers on a daily basis... Avoid it like the plague.

My call center isn't like this. The way the clock managed is no different than a typical factory. They want us in 5 to 10 minutes early, 2 paid 15 minute breaks, 30 minute lunch. In bad weather, we can work from home. Work from home is also an option for qualifying injuries. We work 365 days, but get double pay holidays. I realize my office is not a common occurrence.

I've worked in factories that were this Soul-Crushing. Even with Depression and Anxiety Disorders already, those jobs made it WAY worse. I've gotten physically sick from the mental stress. One factory that was horribly strict like these call centers, had a wretched, bullying supervisor. I used to cry before going into work, because said supervisor was out to make my life a living hell; I was one of her targets. I ended up having a breakdown (as there were deaths in the family that year, on top of other issues), and work was just the last straw. I vowed to never work at a job that treat me like shit again. I walked out of that place, and never looked back. That was 7 years ago.

I got fired the same day I got recognized as the number 1 salesman in our department (of about 200 people) because I didn’t continue reading a 30 second script AFTER the person hung up on me. I got a verbal warning 1 hour after I got my little shit recognition for being the top salesman of the week for exactly that, then 1 hour later they claimed I still wasn’t reading the script (which I WAS! I fuckin knew they were listening to me real time I’m not stupid 😂) then 1 hour after that they tried to give me a week off without pay as punishment for still not listening and that was all I could take and I cussed out the entire place and quit. You are absolutely correct. Our call center, with AT&T, had a 70 percent turn over rate and they INTENTIONALLY wanted as many people fired so they could document the US center as a failure and move it to the Philippines, which they did. I was fired for asking if I needed to come in after a snow storm since many couldn't make it....I did and they changed my day off without telling me, I took my normal day off and didn't clear probation!

I've been unemployed for a while, and I applied to work in a 'Customer Contact Centre' I went for the interview and got called back on the same day saying I had the job. I was pretty pleased as after having no job for a while I was beginning to feel like nowhere wanted me to work for them. I started the week after, and after watching this video the first 10 mins had never felt so relatable. We had 'training' and the most awkward two truths and a lie with an overly eccentric guy who kept talking about how great it was to work there. It was a long painful day of listening to how many calls we had to take in a day, how our screens were monitored, how our calls were monitored, only half hour breaks from an 8-5 /9-6 day, and only being able to go to the toilet 'quickly', what would happen if we didn't meet targets, what would happen if we didn't deal with a call correctly, etc etc. I felt myself nodding along all day and smiling, whilst thinking in my head 'what the fuck have I got myself in to' and by the end of the day I felt like I was going to explode. The manager said, 'thanks for today guys! can you make it in for 9 tomorrow' to which I said yes' as soon as I got home I started crying and thought, no there's no way I can go back there tomorrow to start answering calls after hearing that. I just couldn't envision myself being there, at least being happy there anyway. So that evening I emailed saying that I was sorry but I wouldn't be returning (only a day after signing a permanent contract 😬) It was a massive anti climax as I had told so many of my friends and family I had a new job, and they were messaging me asking how it was going. It lead me to question myself, my resilience and capabilities as a person for only lasting ONE day there, especially as there were so many people there who had been there for 'such a long time!' but after watching this It's kind of made me feel better about the whole thing - so thanks 😂 I'm sure if I'd have stayed I would have had several breakdowns & ended up on antidepressants.

I work for a UK telecom company called Virgin media and Its a Call center it's been 11 months now and if you compare my photo before joining there and current me you will see a happy smiley face vs A old thin depressed guy. Yes that's me. I cry everyday and I am at a point where I work 10 hrs a day with 1 hour of break taking calls with 59 seconds of wrap time and a very little salary to survive on. Our calls are being monitored, they ask us to follow a stupid tool which is so old and irrelevant that it frustrates the hell outta customers and if we don't we get a non compliance and documentation. If the customer is not filling up a survey that is also our problem and responsibility, if a customer gives a 0 in survey we are answerable and 4 managers sit with us to give feedback and that's total torture. You cannot exceed the breaks not even for a minute but personally I do that and now when I feel I cannot survive anymore in this hell. I have applied for supply chain management to get out of this call center life hope I get selected in that and interview goes well😢

The thing is, and I know this from my many years experience with call center work at all levels. The Indian call centers pay them so much money (relatively) that they will put up with anything. In the UK we get paid peanuts and I have no idea why anyone does put up with it, but we do.

Replying a bit late, but the conversion rate of rupees to most of the currencies is pretty steep, that's why it can look like Indians are being paid well for these kind of jobs. Combine that with the cheap imitation Chinese and home grown products being made available cheaply(not like a Sony or Samsung levels of international branding), coupled with call centers usually dabbling close with IT corruption of stealing money from unprotected accounts and fake scams and scandals in a similar way, and you have some really happy campers. Thing is, even with that, they have to put up a load of bullshit and unlike foreigners who can at the very least hold back on their anger. Most Indians are notorious for swearing like sailors on crack. Coupled that with Indian temperatures and a very stingy work environment and it turns into a very ugly sight. So basically, like every other call centers.

Oh, I got a story too. A woman was fired because she had a heart attack and had to leave early in an ambulance. And the reason why she was fired was because the job I worked for with its in house call center, hand a point system that you accrue, and if you get 3 points, they can you. No exceptions. She had 2.5 already, so they fired her the next day after she returned from the hospital. Oh, and where I used to work at, they can in fact fire you over a disability, they just don't put it down that's why they fired you. They'll find some other reason to fire you and use that instead.

Whenever I deal with a call center I always fill out the obligatory "go here and tell us how your experience was", and (aside from always giving the person a good rating because I know this is the kind of shit they have to deal with) I always write in the "optional" or "other" section: "The person was very nice but please stop forcing them to make small talk, ask how you are a million times, say please and thank you after every syllable, etc"... it got to the point where, when dealing with Lenovo's call center, they know where I'm located (Pittsburgh) and they would ask me tons of shit about the Steelers, the weather, tell me about family they have from here, give me their whole life story, etc, and I would DREAD having to call them just to say that one of the hard drives in one of our machines failed can you please have it replaced or some shit like that because it would take forever dealing with them and cringing on the phone the whole time

Worked in a call center for 18 months a few years ago to raise some cash after finishing uni. It was like something out of the DPRK. The final push for me to leave was when a poor lad hung himself in one of the toilet cubicala. The way the company treated the whole situation just made me sick to the stomach. The whole ordeal of working there plus witnessing the suicide attempt has forever left its mark on me. The management system there was just so corrupt to the core, the way they treated people could of turned the strongest of people into wrecks. The HR team was arguably the worst, it was possibly run by the reincarnation of Lavrentiy Beria (but as a lady). They would lead you into a flase sense of security to open up about how you feel and whats going on, only just then to use it against you and then subject you to rather humiliating, cruel and unusual punsishments. If you are an independent thinker or have any modicum of cerebral integrity a call center is probably one of the worst jobs you could ever work. It is dehumanizing work that only serves to destroy your soul.

I got cussed out when I had my cell phone out to enter the JOB's contact information, meanwhile the trainer had her phone out searching and doing who-knows-what! It's such a "rules-are-for-thee-but-not-for-me" environment!!! All call centres are this way. I've worked in literally 12 call centres. Each one lasted from about two days to 1 year in approximation. Never got fired. I bailed.

Coming back to this video 4 years later because I started my first job in a call centre three weeks ago and quit today lmao Every thing he said in this video is true, only three weeks in. Never work in call centres and never ever work in a cold calling campaign, in less than a month I turned from an excited and happy person to a depressed lump. The pay was decent but I would rather be homeless than set foot in that place again.

I have been working in call centers since 2005. This describes the overwhelming majority of them perfectly. However, the guy that I've been working with for the past 6 years runs his business a bit differently. We are not open on weekends. He pays his staff entirely too much, frankly. We DO work most federal holidays, but usually just a half day, as sales drop off after lunch. Basically, all you're required to do is show up on time and stay on the phones. The owner buys the company lunch twice per week. There's a masseuse that comes in every Friday. Even the openers average $300-700 per week ON TOP of their hourly wage. The closers, depending on sales ability, average $1500-2500 per week, PLUS a monthly commission that can range from $3-8k once per month. Customer service staff are paid $20 per hour, plus bonuses and OT. All in all, It's a nice place to work.

Everything you’ve said in this is so true, I worked at one for about a year and quit without having another job to go to, I found a temp job in admin but that’s only for another month and the only job offers I can seem to get now is more call centre work. Another thing I noticed in my place was they LOVED getting in 16-18 year olds who’d never worked before, they fell for the culty company bullshit so much easier and I think the two younger people on our team are the only ones who are still there. Also - we didn’t get our time back with that surprise overtime when a call comes in at the end of the day, and managers would actually get frustrated with you if that happened as they couldn’t finish for the day as well if you still on the phone, so again being punished for something out of ur control. A real running theme, I’m not looking forward to going through this shit again

FEW THINGS TO SAY. fuck Siebel and the near 2 decade old systems rocking P4 processors and a near decade old OS Windows 7 WHICH WHEN ALL COMBINED MEANS SYSTEM CRASHES SO YOUR PAID LESS DUE TO THE SYSTEM LOGING TIMES. NO CHROME FOR SOME REASON AND WHEN YOU NEED TO USE THE COMPANY WEBSITE IT TAKES 10 ATTEMPTS TO LOAD. Because my Centre is too Scoungy to pay to upgrade systems despite being a. Major complaint since day 1. That and we are likely going to move over to a new system shortly which will be even more system resource intensive. Because as an outsource company we need to use other systems despite our software and hardware limitations. Despite the Billion pounds UK turn over. I have done the maths and forwarded up the chain and for all our UK call centres to have duel core systems at least running Windows 10 will only cost 1million pounds that's by buying up old Core duo systems from other UK buis esses who have moved towards more up to date systems. Hell it would cost 100 million to upgrade to more future proof I5 and I3 systems. But fuck us right. Makes me want to beat It management and infrastructure development over the fucking head with a keyboard. Sorry had to vent

I can confirm that call center in the United States are just like that as well. Every story I have from working at a call center is just terrible. Except one that was just sad, and weird. When my father died I told them I needed some time off to get things straight, and get his body to his home state to be buried where he wanted. They said sure thing, and offered their condolences. Then they told me I could take a day off to get everything taken care of, and not to worry about making that day up... I told them I needed more than a day, and then just quit. I mean really a single day to travel halfway across the US, and get all of my father's affairs in order. After 3 days they keep calling me nonstop asking when I was coming back.

Late reply on my part. But I noticed this when I worked at Walmart. I saw an old granny who seemed super sweet to her grandkids. She seemed like the nicest person in the world. But when she came up to my register, she absolutely annihilated me. Treated me like I was a dog. Sometimes customer service situations bring out the worst in people.

Although, in all fairness, I was a god damned rock star, until some fuck head ranted at me for 15 minutes about being a high school dropout. So I got an engineering degree and designed airplanes, because fuck him.
