As a person active since 1980s and making my Vocation the implementation of this paradigm shift this kind of hostility was for years as a young person the constant state of family gatherings, talks with friends - and public engagement efforts. Decades on and Phil long fired for speaking the truth about the Gulf Wars we are a poorer society for losing these kinds of conversations.

Happy Birthday River!! Wish you were here to enjoy it. River was the finest actor of MY generation and Phil Donahue was one of the nicest celebrities I ever met (and I have met plenty!) When I attended a taping of the DONAHUE program in 1988 he actually stood in the back of the studio and shook the hand of EVERY member of the audience. I doubt if Oprah ever once did that. RIP River still watch your movies (especially STAND BY ME and MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO) and still miss you here in Florida!

Nowadays if people as educated and well-spoken as these three(especially young people like Lisa and River) are on a talk show, the host would be changing subject every five seconds. I just love how everyone sitting up there AND the host were intellectually sound!

I thought Raul was the most level headed and realistic person on the show. I loved how he was certain to mention that meat eaters should not feel guilty----and they shouldn't because that's how our ancestors evolved. Their dietary choices are some of the main reasons why we are here. I don't agree with hunting an animal just to put it's head or body on a wall, but I don't think it's disrespectful to an animal to eat it and put its other body parts to use.

The guy in the back with the white shirt, the older guy who asks a question toward the end...he mentions to Lisa and River to "organize your own generation and get them motivated." That's just what happened with me, River was a key influence on me going veggie around 1988. The Gen X folks ended up being the war protesters for Gulf War I and II, they got a good foothold in the veg*n generation that's now very strong. The GenX'ers are having kids now and raising them veg*n! Hooray!!
