A superb album. IMO one of the great "Steely Dan" albums, from beginning to end. Any song from this album is a wise choice. Always great seeing you guys enjoy my favorite music. This song is a favorite, for the charming rhythms and melodies, and the classic SD way of telling of an unfortunate situation without actually saying it, just talking all around it. Lovely. Thanks guys.

20-30 takes?! lmao not even 20-30 hours, we measured Dan and Fagen's albums by YEARS... so a little note, growing up with The Boys we understood how great they were, we just were naive enough to think we would hear something like it or that good again, yea, well, 40-50 years later and still waiting. So, when we would hear their albums the first time, we would be blown away but had to re-listen to absorb all the delicate touches built into their musical paintings. So when we would hear "would you make me a Cuban Breeze, Gretchen" it would stick and become part of our vernacular and would be sprung on unsuspecting parties, such as being greeted by a server in a restaurant, heaven forbid, named Gretchen, lol, and it was a race to fit in the phrase at the best point, "can you make me a Cuban Breeze, Gretchen"? There are nuggets like this all through their musical history, and many me and my friends still use to this day, and all we need say is a word, or a short phrase from The Boys, and bam! - memories are triggered and we are transported in our minds to those glorious times back in the day. Hope you get as much out them as we did, cause it's been a wonderful ride.

@@AirplayBeats Agreed they are rooted in jazz. Fagen once said in an interview, he and Walter were raised on jazz and when starting out, they went to studios selling songs...more pop rock stuff which you hear on the first album. Where do I start? Firstly, you’re reviews are fabulous. It maybe your first time, would be at least my thousandth lol. Musically, as with everything on The Nightfly, it is flawless. But look at the band!!! Larry Carlton on guitar (and the brilliant Steve Khan and Dean Parks). Jeff Porcaro from Toto on drums. The legendary Marcus Miller on bass. The equally legendary Greg Phillinganes on keys. Valerie Simpson (Ashford & Simpson) on bv’s and the brilliant Starz Vanderlocket on percussion. Add to that a fusion of Caribbean/Jazz and ending with a conga. Untouchable.

Larry Carlton, for me, is among the best of the best, and I favor his playing among most of those. He is absolutely brilliant here. I have had this song in my head for weeks at a time and only removed it by conscious choice. Donald Fagen is a demigod. I generally pay close attention to the bass guitar: on this song the bass player is so good that I had to concentrate to isolate his or her (his) line in the song. That may be the greatest compliment that a bass player can achieve on a tune of this magnitude: it's everywhere but I can't tell where it is! If I had to guess(and at this point I do), I would say Chuck Rainey is the bassist.

Try to get to "Maxine" and "Ruby baby" before you leave this album. Edit: forgot. There's some Donald Fagen songs from movie soundtracks you'll want to try too. "True companion", from the "heavy metal" soundtrack, and "century's end" (forgot what movie it's from). And one more Steely Dan, "chain lightning". I don't know what album or what it's from (I've only heard it on a "best of"). Sort of a Doo wop/blues song. Different, but still good. Edit edit: sorry one more. "Here at the western world". It's another that's on a best of, but not on a regular album. I read it got dropped from "royal scam", but not added to "Aja". It's a good song though, and you can tell it sounds like it would have been on one of those albums.
