@@cj8172 One big flaw is that Abraham's willingness to kill his son is portrayed as a virtue. Yes, yes, yes, I know he was stopped from following through but that is really beside the point. His willingness is portrayed as a virtue and not a flaw. There are many other acts by humans that are truly horrific that are portrayed as virtuous. Lott's willingness to let his daughters be gang raped to protect angels is portrayed as a virtue. Couldn't angels protect themselves? Moses was supposedly ordered to wipe out the Midianianites. He did so except for virgin girls. Yes, all wiped out except for the virgin girls. An entire people --- gone. Oh, and as for the entire premise of the New Testament ... why wouldn't God be able to simply forgive humanity without allowing an innocent person to die a horrible tortuous death? Why is blood necessary for forgiveness?

Constant focus on your goals motivates you to achieve them, no god or magical thinking is required. Introducing god mainly helps the pastor’s tax situation as he gets you to accept tithing-Osteen has $40 million in his bank account....Watching these supposedly religious evangelicals fawn over a conman like Trump has not just turned me off christianity, but now I see christianity is a system of self delusion. I questioned this doctrine when my husband and I first got married. I was told the fact that my family I believed in Jesus, I wasn’t saved. Then the demands for money got intense. We were beyond poor, very young with a small baby. They demanded money. Having financial difficulties? It’s because you’re not tithing. Have a handicapped daughter, your fault!!! Oh you tithed and gave back tithes like they demanded? It’s some sort of “hidden sin”!!! Better pray and ask God to reveal to you “where you are sinning”!!! There was no way to win with these people. I saw and heard of folks dying of medical issues that could have been fixed with doctors but they refused to go because of an extreme “health” version of this. It totally ignored and negates the use and practice of Grace towards the poor, the sick, the broken. It’s a cruel spirit ran by the devil and I don’t know what side you think you’re on it’s the wrong one.

My brother tickled my mind with this question: "If you are in debt and tithe, aren't you tithing the Bank's money?" Get out of debt first, then tithe your own money. You're already tithing to the bank in interest. And before tithing to the motivational speaker called pastor, maybe rather give to the poor and needy around you. Matthew 25 doesn't end with: "...as much as you did/ did not do it for the pastor...", it ends with: "...as much as you did/ did not do it to these least of people, you did (-not do-) it to Me."

What profit is it that a man should gain the whole world and in it himself be lost. You can't worship both God and money. It's easier to thread a camel through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to get into heaven. Seek for yourself treasures in heaven. Roosters have roosts and birds have nests but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head. Money is the root of all kinds of evil. He who makes himself last will be made first in the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are the poor for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Where exactly does the Bible say to seek wealth? Those quotes are just off the top of my head and it's obvious the Bible doesn't teach the pursuit of money. Capitalism is every man for himself so the the terms "Christian" and "Capitalism" don't really go together.

And, rightly so!!! Teaching kids (and adults) to be scared out of their minds, thinking that if they do anything that’s considered to be sinful, they’re going to FRY or ROAST in flames of fire forever and ever simply because they wasn’t absolutely perfect is paramount to child abuse. I now have Complex PTSD because of the cult I used to go to. Christianity is nothing but a fear based religion!!! And, it does a ton of damage to kids (and adults). And, besides, according to the man made bible of yours, hell I’d simply the grave. Jesus was in hell for 3 days and 3 nights!!! Was He roasting in fire and brimstone?!!? Was Jesus being tortured?!!? NO!!! But, He was put inside the tomb (the grave). And, the bible uses words like, “perish” to describe the condition of the “lost,” and Ecclesiastes 9:5 says that “the living know that they are shall die, but as for the dead, they know NOTHING, and neither have any more reward.” And, according to the man made bible, you ARE a soul. You don’t HAVE a soul!!! Hell, as we know it today, was an invention of the Church to scare the crap out of people so that THEY can control the masses. And, it definitely worked for a while. Fear is always a very powerful motivator!!! But, is that what God Almighty wants?!!? For us to be terrified of Him?!!? NO, I don’t think so!!! God is love!!! He’s compassionate!!! He cares!!! He’s NOT the sadistic monster that people make Him out to be!!! Just saying!!! And, yeah, the doctrines of hell just makes more and more people want to leave the so-called Church. And, of course, all the extremely greedy preachers, too, nowadays. Disgusting!!! Teaching kids to fear God and hell and pretty much everything else in this life is paramount to horrible, horrible child abuse. I was one of those kids that grew up emotionally, psychologically and spiritually traumatized by the whole thing. And, that’s what YOU wanna have taught and drilled into the brains of our children and other adults?!!? That would make YOU feel good (happy)?!!? WOW!!!

There are many people like me who have great respect and sympathy for libertarian views but view them as either too extreme in practice or which cannot be achieved in undiluted form - hence the needs for civility, compromise and competence. The money changers today are alive and well in the oligarchy of the House of Clinton. Hillary too claims to be a person of faith when it suits her. I'd suggest that had this country stuck to using honest weight and measures as biblically commanded, it would not keep suffering these economic bubbles. When the currency bubble implodes it is going to be very ugly. Adherence to shemita year debt forgiveness is worthy of consideration.

One can figure out right away when they are about money to make them wealthy. Although some people are perhaps like sheep and believe these false prophets. We don't need such preachers to believe in God and follow the bible that God left. How can they determine where people are going to heaven or hell when they don't know where they are going themselves for lying and deceiving the people.

The title talks about Donald Trump and the evangelical "money cult," but this bit is mostly about "the money cult." I would have appreciated more in-depth analysis of how Donald Trump intersects with the prosperity gospel. Lehmann introduces the subject by talking about Trump's religious pedigree, and a bit on his charitable giving (not so much), but leaves it at that. How does his campaign reflect this idea of Christianity? How is he viewed among different Christian sects, positive or negative? I would've liked to have heard more about that from him.

The challanges of organized religion is the inherit "tribes" it creates and the division that stems from the us and them paradigm. If religious leaders created a narratives that all faith demand recognition and respect the world would be a more peaceful place. The lack of understanding between different religions ,customs and traditions create it's own prejudice. Education is the key to understanding and respect for others, that is a basis for Christan and infact all religious beliefs.
@martycarpenter3829
@martycarpenter3829 3 жыл бұрын
@M S And its this perspective that undermines the principals of not only Christianity but of common decency. Not sure if you travel much I have and seen other cultures and religions, the common thread to all the people I have met and respect is humanity, common respect and putting others before oneself. I guess if that is a ticket to Hell , well at least I would be in good company.
@martycarpenter3829
@martycarpenter3829 3 жыл бұрын
@M S I certainly respect your the right to stand up for what you believe in, but as a Christian your comment "All but one are false. Jesus is our Savior, he isn't a religion, he died for us. You don't have to believe in him, he gave you free will. Just know that if you don't believe, you will go to Hell" is inherently disrespectful. I have friends with many diverse religious backgrounds and I was was brought up a Catholic so if we look for a common thread as Jesus would teach "Thou shall love thy neighbor as thy self". Asian if heaven is only a place for narrow minds and hard hearts, I will be happy with the sinners.
@martycarpenter3829
@martycarpenter3829 3 жыл бұрын
@M S You are right, it would a mistake for me to suggest your not allowed your opinion, that is disrespectful. The point I was making initially is that deeply entrenched beliefs of Christianity or any other religion for that matter creates its own bias and in fact resentment and prejudice. Tribalism has been the driving force behind most wars so the less "Us versus Them" we have in the world all the better.

There's a real art to finishing a point. Perhaps Nick could teach this to Chris. "Um, sort of...you know..." doesn't communicate any actual data. That said, the thesis of this work is so true. American Evangelicals are creating a kind of citizenship manual for worshipers of the market. The specifics of Christianity are less important than an individual's commitment to membership and common actions which will lead to promised rewards. What one hears from the pulpit is repeated in popular media, and the news is a cautionary tale of the woes of the nonconformists.

The earthbound tendency of the prosperity gospel has antecedents in early Christianity and Judaism with the belief in the physical resurrection of the dead, the Jewish messiah making ancient Judea the greatest power on earth. Judeo-Christian Theology has always been anti spiritual. See the Anathemas against Origen which condemned the belief in reincarnation and the belief in intelligence in celestial spheres and just about anything else. In a sense the early Church rendered the universe inert /dead , ideas which later influenced the materialism of Western science. Obviously that's another story.
@AlexKomnenos
@AlexKomnenos 3 жыл бұрын
You’re wrong and your conclusions sound like repackaged Gnosticism where everything physical is bad and truth can only be found in purely spiritual ideas. The teachings of the Bible combine both, God is spirit and fills the universe and has created other spiritual beings yet He created humanity with physical bodies yet having soul and spirit. This tendency as you claimed is as old as humanity and it doesn’t have any origins in early Christianity nor Judaism. The oldest book in the Bible, “Job” clearly deals with this issue. Job’s friends are clearly of the idea that Job was suffering because he had done something wrong and that God only blessed those without sin. Job’s friends are rebuked by God when He finally reveals Himself. The Bible clearly condemns this kind of theology and clearly shows that it is an aberration. Just because modern religious people adhere to this doesn’t mean that it is outlined in scripture.
