US president Donald Trump defends his decision to withdraw support for Kurdish allies in Syria by saying they did not help the US during the second world war, citing Normandy as an example. Kurdish forces did fight alongside the US against Isis for nearly five years before Trump's call to remove US troops from the region.

The point he is trying to make with mentioning Normandy / ww2 and the Kurds not having been allies in those battles is that the kurds are only allied to the USA while the USA is involved in wars in Kurdish lands. They are not long standing allies with a history of major wars and treaties like NATO, they are involved with each other while there are battles going on in kurdish lands. These wars are coming to an end as far as the USA is concerned, the USA is pulling out so they are separating their interests and that partnership is over and each side goes their own way.
