We do a lot of remodeling in old plaster homes in San Antonio. Can relate to all your content. Every time you talk about hack work I picture an electrician making holes in the wall with a hammer😂

It’s insane how modern electricians don’t know proper installation methods for older homes, it’s a priceless asset as a tradesmen that does residential work. I can understand how commercial mechanics may not have a clue, but resi guys……it’s crazy.

@@DonaldMillerElectric exactly. I'm amazed at how long some of this stuff has been working for in the older homes.

Tuesday before last, I took a "shop call" through the union. I asked the hall and even called and texted the man in charge where i was assigned. He didnt answer my call or retuen my text. I show up last Monday and im told that its Residential, Way out of my locals jurisdiction with no extra pay. and he asks me if i want to try it. Well im already here so whatever. It was the WORST six days of my electrical career. I told the JW that i was gonna drag last Thursday. Im not a quitter but i was laid off yesterday (monday) and im HAPPY about it. I was doing lights one day and i thought i was doing a good.job. then the JW says he doesnt know.what i was doing up there for hours as he expected.the lights, the receptacles AND the switches before lunch. I told him that i only have ONE speed. And the one resi apprentice that i met on the last commercial job, now is trying to get in the commercial program. Im glad im gone. Ill NEVER work residential again.

Im in a terrible situation right now where im a helper in a company who uses "leads" who are hacks and dont know anything about electrical its actually insane. My master electrician is very skilled though. I have had good teachers in the past so i do know some good practices and discipline. i am very dilligent and i am very dedicated. Unfortunate situations have lead me to move. I just need a good mentor.

Move on to a different company. Until the master realizes the damage s the hacks are causing nothing is gonna change. I fire hacks as soon as I know they’re hacks.

@@dissonantchaos7724 I've had to work under hacks in my day as well. The best advice I can give his to learn what not to become, learn what not to do, and when you have the chance install every device to the best of your ability. Make your work look the sexiest it can look. This is build a good character and prep you for the wonderful road the lies ahead of you. Hang in there and never stop learning....from the good and the bad.

How do you stay motivated? I started when I was 19. I’m 25 years old now I just got my E-98 a year ago. I just bought my first home a month ago. I’m happy with everything else going in my life, although there is some days when I wake I up i want to call in so bad but I know I can’t. At work recently I haven’t been giving it my best. I know I can be more faster and efficient but sometimes the effort isn’t there. So how do you keep that flame lit under your ass?

Start testing your efficiency levels, time yourself, find areas where your weak and focus on them. We all go through funks, sometimes its diet, or a new tool bag, or new boots. I’ve been burned out and stressed out. I find caring about my work puts me in a new state of mind and gets me out of funks. Good luck and keep me posted.
