Fantastic review. Your footage looks great! I just bought a CX10 to film hiking and wildlife videos in Colorado. As someone who actually started out using these camcorder style bodies back in the day and switched to large sensor cameras 10 years ago, it's nice to have one of these again.

That's awesome to hear! I also come from a large sensor background but there's so much camcorders can do that DSLR's and mirrorless cameras can't. Best of luck with the new camera.

I couple of things worth mentioning is that the camera can shoot in 10 bit, when most camcorders that size only shoot in 8 bit. That alone would make it qualify for some broadcast work where other small camcorders would be rejected. It also has build in ND filters, which make it easier to get that more cinematic slow shutter speed motion blur. Although this camera doesn't have vlog, it does have a couple of semi flat profiles including Cinelike-D to give more dynamic range and extra flexibility for people who like to colour grade their footage. I'd say an impressive little camera on the whole.

So true. The bit rate on this is incredible and with some natural or well lit scenes, you can achieve some incredibly clear and crisp shots with this camera. It does lack v-log but the cine profiles do allow for some great color range. Thanks for the comment!

Your final shots say it all for me. I’ve got a GH5 and the Leica 100-400mm telephoto and the images and video are great but it’s never gonna be as convenient and easy to use as my X2000 when filming wildlife. You just turn it on and your good to go with reliable auto focus, great colour, fantastic zoom reach from what is a really good lens and with the XLR inputs I have to say great audio. It’s still early days for me but I’m enjoying using it that for sure. I look forward to seeing more of what you create with yours 👍

I filmed on a Canon t2i from 2010 to 2018. I upgraded to an A7Sii. Seriously not as happy with it as I was with my Canon. That being said. My point is that I made tons of footage look Cinematic and professional grade looking because I was a filmmaker and didn’t let the camera dictate that. I believe if you controlled your environment a bit, composed your shots well. You could probably achieve great cinematography with a camera like this. I’ve been trying to do my research and go to a camcorder.
@mattcolvin8623
@mattcolvin8623 3 жыл бұрын
Dude my first camera was a t3i and I've been seeking that cinematic gold ever since; I'm sure the t2i was great too. Yeah man I definitely agree with that about the cinematic footage cause I still do a lot of corporate interviews and commercial work that is driven by that cinematic style but most newcomers to the field have been mislead by people saying that DSLR's and mirrorless cameras are the way to go when most steady paychecks are jobs produced by simple repeatable work. That's why camcorders are a very viable option as a reliable, all around work horse camera.

I went from a 7K MKII to the CX 10 for a run and gun event/trade show interviews and it is well worth it. Not to mention the size but it can be ready in a few seconds from bag to hand. Battery life is amazing. While it does not do the shallow DOF like a DSLR the easy of use in a hurry and auto focus more than makes up for it.

FInally!! I found a good hands on review for the AG-CX10...I have been debating to upgrade my two Canon camcorders XF300 (ancient I know but very realiable) that I use for concerts on stage and other videos that require deep focus and servo zooms and I haven't found a good replacement yet. I have a C100 mk2 and a Canon 90D which are awesome for some type of shooting but not for live concerts or dance shows.I don't think I would shoot always on 4k but I want a camcorder with 18x or 20x optical zoom, good low light (relatively speaking low light-not DSLR capability I know)and that can give you great 1080p (similar OR BETTER than what I get with my Canon XF300)...perhaps I'm asking for too much. I wanted to try this camera but now that my video jobs have been canceled for the Summer it seems, well...I'm reluctant to buy any new equipment.I hope you do more videos soon. I Know that youtube degrades video quality but I'm not sure that the the quality of the video is that great...You did get some "cinematic" like shots for sure but some just look a bit soft...Maybe I'm too spoiled with my Canon C100 mk2! If I had money I would buy the overpriced Canon XF705 but that's too much for me...Are you keeping this camera? Thanks
@mattcolvin8623
@mattcolvin8623 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback Erick. To start, I definitely agree about the lowlight and sensor situations. While these camcorders are incredible in so many ways, the small sensor definitely takes a hit on the performance. I would say avoid shooting in those types of situations or shoot with your c100 mk2 instead. BUT, I feel that it is all about the tool and how you use it. I bought this camera for convenience and 4k/60, and it has definitely met those standards. I am keeping this camera, and hopefully will be posting a lot this summer so maybe that will help inform your decision in purchasing. Best of luck in these trying times man!

@@mattcolvin8623 hey hey...thanks for posting...I will wait for a few more videos. I'm hoping to get some video contracts in a few months...oh well... iwish I could compare the AG-CX10 in 1080p against a Canon XF300 during a live performance (with stage lighting) or a live events-a wedding ceremony-if the quality is better in 1080p then I would be convinced. The size is perfect-reminds me of my old XF100 but the pic quality has to be there too. I hope the world heals soon...not just about the pandemic but also about our hearts and minds...so much hate around..peace friend

Nice review, since last year I am making video's for a world music & dance festival, Last year I made them with my canon eos 7d MII & older 600D, but in my opinion, both of the dslr's didn't do it so well, this year I'm going to film also at other moments,last year I filmed espacially during the shows and after with the bands & Dj"s. Did you ever had some experience with similar projects? Would you use dslr's or this type of camera? I can use this type for a week via via but I'm not sure yet.

Great video, I had my eye on the baby one in this batch release, the X1500. I was planning on getting the X1500 and add the handle later as I wanted to see how it would work with my Deity V Mic D3 Pro. I ended up getting the older, slightly larger HC-X1 for the larger sensor and the fact that the X1500 was back ordered. While the built in screen isn't great, I use an external monitor to see when outdoors. This unit is new to me and I have used it a couple of times to get a feel for it. I will post a review of that unit soon along with my Nikon Z6 which after getting a cage and other accessories, just took too long to setup and I just wanted something that can be ready faster. Looking for more videos from you and your experience with the new unit.

Thanks, I'm undecided whether to upgrade my Mirrorless or buy one of these "toys"... I'm evaluating the ax700 from Sony because it has a bigger sensor but it doesn't have the 60fps, anyway you can make great slowmotion with davinci resolve even with 30fps!!! Do you think that listening to a handycam is really a good choice to mimic a "cinematic" style? Of course with some limitations compared to a mirrorless in this sense I think especially the DOF and low light shooting but I think it is relatively easy to use and get good results quickly. I am Italian excuse my English :)

Good vid so far however, Sony makes smaller camcorders than this one with a larger sensor size. Sensor size is never the issue as their are full size sensor cameras the size of the avg. smart phone. The purpose for using a smaller sensor in a camcorder is stability, heat management, depth of field, and longer focal lengths in a small package (no one is making 24-600mm 1.8, 2.8 full frame lenses, too expensive and big to create) Use case is another factor. Most camcorders are used in professional settings as they deal better with heat in that configuration. The button layout allows for more controls and the overall handling is much better than a traditional DSLR design. Lastly I'd say batteries seem to fit better in an external configuration than internal. All this keeps cost down. Extra, theirs also a law that supposedly makes any camera that can shoot over 30min a camcorder by definition so it also has to do with marketing as to the use of titles.

I did enjoy this video. Thank you. All the footage samples I've found online seem a little soft to me, but I can't tell if that is KZbin downgrading the quality. Hey David. Thanks for commenting. So in some situations, I have found the footage to be slightly soft. This is mostly Low light situations though. If you are shooting in daytime or golden hour situations with ample light, the footage seems crisp to me. Next step up from these little camcorders is not a DSLR, but a cinema camera, like the FS5 M2. DSLR’s are okay for faking the shallow depth of field, but lower bit rates etc compromise the files, and the ergonomics of a DSLR are not ideal. The 1DX M3, for example produces some beautiful files but being wrapped in that awkward stills body (plus its price) is its downfall. If you enjoyed the X1500/X2000/CX10 series, you would love the FS5 M2 with its Super 35 sensor, interchangeable lenses, high frame rates, and gorgeous files :) Meanwhile, Panasonic has made a superb small camcorder and I loved your footage. People too often forget that the camcorder doesn’t finish at the eyepiece or monitor, in fact the most important parts of any camera is the nut between the ears, the story-teller, and the feeling heart just behind the camera body :) This is a short video about the FS5 M2 kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4PSnGOEqM2BnKM BTW, welcome to the dark side. There are quite a few of us here who came from DSLR’s and discovered why the camcorder form-factor exists and is thriving.

It's funny because I went the other direction, having started with VHS, Video8, DV and HDV cameras in the 90s/00s. Now shooting with the GH4 and a couple C100s. That said I have a lot of experience with small camera sensors and would have killed for a camera like this back in 1999 or 2003 when we shot our first feature film on a Canon XL1 DV camera in 480/60i yikes!. We always had to back the camera up a long ways off so that we could push in with the zoom to get that shallow DOF shot. So there is no doubt you can do great work with a camera like this and obviously your shots show you have talent. Full frame especially is often overrated and razor thin depth of field is generally annoying and distracting to watch. But personally I tend to like the m43 and APS-C frame sizes for video/film. I think those are the sweet spot. Of course it all depends on what you're shooting. Anyway nice video, great shots and thanks for reading my old man rant. I'm not even that old, I'm in my early 40s.

I am committed to a camcorder Trading 2 cameras to get a professional Camcorder. A Panasonic is the way I am going. Value and performance is what I want. Hybrid means it does more than one thing. I wanted a focused Video solution. I don't shoot pictures and if I do my Sony a6400 is here for the game, or my iPhone 12 Pro Max, but a camcorder will be an in one package, include my mics my external 7 inch monitor, and I am ready to get it done. For my Church services predominantly, as much as I love my a6400, no Balanced Audio, can overheat, so a Camcorder it is. Candidates, Sony, Canon, Panasonic. I wanted a Canon C100, but practical considerations were a fail for me. One package, one solution. Well mostly.

I couldn't agree more. Camcorders are the all in one package especially for smaller crews or a one man army. Best of luck with your purchase.

Yeah low light is definitely not this cameras strong suite. One of the big downsides of small sensors.

Fair enough. It definitely has made me change my stance on the dslr v. Camcorder debate, and that is more so the point of the video.

Mirrorless cameras are great at what they do, but they are very limited in what they can do. Thats why I think this camcorder beats mirrorless and DSLR. It is way more versatile.

Fair enough haha it's definitely not for everyone and every shooting style, but I have found it to be a great addition to my collection. I think I'm going to make a 1 year review video this week so if you want some more info definitely watch out for that. My views have changed a bit from this video, some for better and some for worse.

Wery noisy and no dof. What "killer"? Also a poor dynamic range, compared to dslr. Better compare it to phone! A phone killer!!!!
@mattcolvin8623
@mattcolvin8623 4 жыл бұрын
Hahaha well I can see you didn't watch the video. I stated a couple times that DSLR's definitely have the benefits of a larger sensor SUCH AS Shallow DOF and Better ISO. This camera I reviewed is a better ALL AROUND video camera though with more in body features and abilities than a DSLR. There is more to video production than just slow mo B-roll with some pop music in the background.
