At Govanhill Baths Archives & Heritage we are interested in both the Baths building and the communities who have used it throughout time. Govanhill has always been a place of migration. When we opened in 1917 the majority of people attending were from the Irish, Italian, Jewish and Highlander communities. We set up the Govanhill Baths Irish History Group to collect stories from people about their family’s connection to Ireland, mainly Donegal, and Glasgow (mainly Govanhill, Gorbals and southside).
The group was launched at the Govanhill International Festival & Carnival in 2022. Since then, it met regularly, and set up a Facebook page (Irish History Group) where people shared their stories, memories and photographs.
We thank everyone involved in the Irish History Group and all of the contributors.

About Govanhill Baths:
Govanhill Baths Community Trust’s goal is to reopen the Govanhill Baths as a Wellbeing Centre and to contribute to the wider social, cultural and built regeneration of Govanhill as a community through a range of activities. Govanhill Baths Community Trust was born out of a vibrant and historic community campaign to save the historic baths in 2001 from closure. The community spirit and commitment has resulted in Govanhill Baths being back in community ownership as a vital community asset. The ethos of Govanhill Baths has always been: ‘Run for the community, by the community’. Today it is a social business with effective local partnerships and a commitment to transforming/regenerating our community for the benefit of local people.
