She was an amazing lady. I think she tried to visit everywhere at least once, so her fans could hear her live.

This is at a point in her life where she had the youthful agility and also the full sound - including the mad scene with both Eflats! Thank you for posting this!! What a gem!!

I was aware of this happening, but as a poor student I couldn’t go. My best friend did though. How great to hear it. Thank you for sharing.

A glorious performance. Sutherland was always most complimentary about Aragall. He helped her revive Esclarmonde. Unfortunately the only time I was due to hear him he cancelled. Thanks so much for posting.

Aragall is amazing !! I heard him often in Munich.....except some performances overshadowed by nervosity and missing self consciousness,he had the most brilliant and house filling voice full of subtile beauty.

It is also possible to see Pablo Elvira highlights' on YT and hear his thunderous voice (first, he was jazz trumpeter!). Longue vie encore au brillant Aragall!

Did Ricky have a plane to catch? What's with all the cuts in the score, including the prelude for God's sake?

Perhaps more was cut just for this performance?

What a dream. An all male all Latin voices cast with the lead Dame Joan in all her weird round huge scale, motherly, stratospheric coloratura glory. And all in this incredible opera. Too bad the recording is terrible quality. Aragall sounds incredibly fresh with the voice well centered… which was not always the case a decade later. The Mad scena seems sharp like the orchestra is almost a half step higher. Her Eb’s sound like E naturals. Sutherland uses real chest voice at many points which frankly she barely ever had. What a great pirate recording.

The mad scene is in the correct pitch. So are the E flats. The 1st E flat does indeed sound a tiny bit higher that a proper E flat, but is nowhere near an E natural.

Fine cast although it sounds like it was recorded from a speaker outside the theater. As usual Elvira stops the show with his opening aria. No other baritone even Merrill (and he apparently hated the role) or the outstanding late Theodore Lambrinos (who I had the pleasure of appearing with in this opera) made as much of this aria & cabaletta as did the late Elvira - one of the most sumptuous Baritone voices of his time.
