I believe the reason for why Donkey Kong is called "Donkey" is either because it was to play on the phrase "Stubborn as a Mule," in which it's quite clear that DK has shown himself to be stubborn in a lot of situations once he gets his mind set on a particular goal (I.E. Stealing a factory's worth of toys because, he wouldn't take them being sold out everywhere sitting down. He HAD to have the toys and wasn't going to wait until they restocked.) Or because the creator, Miyamoto, thought of it as a means of conveying that DK isn't very bright (I.E. while it is stated that DK's preferred item in Mario Party 2 is the Bowser Bomb, because he believes he can fight Bowser and assert his strength... It can be argued he's a little bit foolish in this line of thinking, considering what the Bowser Bomb does and how it affects players on the board, with DK being no exception.)

5:55 Well, ignoring that it's probably just words the Japanese Devs picked for the Original game if you really want a theory. It IS Canon that the Donkey we play as is in fact Donkey Kong Jr, Cranky was the Original Donkey Kong that kidnapped Pauline and fought with "Jumpman". So from that, could be assumed that "Donkey" is an honor title. Then AGAIN as for why Donkey would be an honor title, there's a store chain in Japan called Don Quijote (after the famous book) which gets referred to as "Donki". Though that wouldn't work as they only changed their name to Don Quijote in '89, 8 years after DK was made. Though apparently the real reason which Shigeru Miyamoto gave in an interview. He thought Kong meant gorilla in English, while Donkey meant stupid. So really, his name is Stupid Gorilla.

For me my most vivd memory of this game was exploring crosshair's temple as donkey and getting the banana. Only to then be yelled at and instantly turning off console vowing to never go back in there. Though I broke that vow recently as I go back to beat the game, using this as my guide. Soon enough I will pass my old max banana count of 100 and catch up to the series and eventually actually beat the game.

You can actually glitch the game on the third time you change from day to night and there after if you hit the switch to change it and jump down quickly and spawn in a zinger or flipflap before the time completely changes to night or day you will lock in the type of enemies on the stage so it’s possible to have night time enemies during the day and daytime enemies during the night

I never got far enough to get to the Fungi Forest, but if I saw that mushroom puzzle, I'd have probably thought I had to cycle through the kongs to hit their respective mushrooms somehow. Edit: Yes, I know it's locked behind a timed Lanky switch, but that would've been my first impression. Either that or I'd have thought I had to hit those five gun switches in that order.

Donkey Kong was named after his stupid traits, so he's a dumb...donkey. Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong's names are the real mystery. EDIT: As far as your vivid memory of DK64, the human brain likes to take shortcuts in order to make processing information easier. As such, it prefers to take info in bite-sized chunks. The scene you remembered is probably what your brain chose to represent your whole experience with DK64. This is also why people like memes so much.
