Ode to the classic fairytale, Catherine Deneuve stars as princess whose father, the King

I found this to be a very entertaining movie. Blue and Red men and horses, a Donkey that poops gold and jewels, a cat throne, and the helicopter! I enjoyed this movie and all of its quirkiness.

@daphane71 As the king says in the beginning, the fairy knows the future, she travels there and brings back poetry from the XX th century as well as a phone (you can see it in the scene when she sings the daughters and fathers song. She also mention a battery at some point. She's modern : she wears high heels and short hairs, and her dress is also more modern than the rest of the costumes, which are a meddley of XVI th and XVIII th centuries. It's quite normal for her to use such artefacts.

i am a new zealander and have been brought up with stories like snow white and sleeping beauty and all the disney classics and when my french teacher showed me this fairy tail i realised that the world is missing out on some of the greatest stories that are hidden in diffferent countries. I think that we should be exposed to more of these weird and wonderfull movies/stories :)

@SomberIngenue This is the story of Donkey Skin. It is a French story written by Charles Perrault. Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics is based on fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm (kinda obvious by the name).

Lol who knows if the fairy godmother kept telling the princess to give up because she wanted to prevent incest or because she wanted the king to herself lololol. The story doesn't make much sense, because the prince could cut straight to the chase--the ring couldn't have been anyone's but donkey skin's since she baked the cake right..?

Don''t search an explanation for the helicopter.This is a fairy tale and everything is possible in fairy tales! And this tale isn't absurd at all,it is good and merry. Donkey Skin really escaped her father because he wanted to marry her and this is an incest.So if you dislike this tale go and see another movie. I am french and this tale belongs to my culture.

In a way they're doing the Cinderella thing but in this case it doesn't make sense because he already knows exactly who she is so what's the point of this charade? He just didn't have the guts to tell his parents she was a scullery maid so what is he proving by showing that the ring belongs to a scullery maid (or so he believed). What a waste of an entire day fitting the ring to all these mean spirited women who he knows isn't the one. At least with Cinderella the prince had no idea whose shoe it was so was using the shoe fitting to find the woman he loved.

Well actually they did, in the beginning of the movie : the Blue King reads poetry to his daughter, and he says the book come from the future. And the faerie talks about it later in the film too. :)

One of the farm-workers called Donkeyskin "Cinderella" when they were mocking her, so I'm guessing her story already happened at this point, kind of like how the hag (who seems to be a certain evil sister from another Perrault story) also mentioned "Little Red Riding Hood."

I like Miss Glun. She seems to have a better story and need to be a wife of a prince than anyone there especially Donkey skin cause she's a princess anyway and has the magic to have anything wants. Glum is in rags and looks poor and they said she was unemployed. There is this sassyness and coolness about her. I'm sick of making us feel sorry for these prefect blonde girls that are ugly only because of the outfit they are wearing and are sad for being too beautiful. It's so annoying.

Sorry for the reply 7 years after you wrote this but for people that could read this also : you are bummed by the situation, but you missed the point of one of the most basic fairytale storyline. The donkey skin is the outer appearence, and the beauty in the inner appearence. He fell in love for who she really is. Not for being rich or beautiful. When he sees her all dressed up in the forest, she is hidden in the woods, in a glass shelter and he can't enter. It's a metaphor for him wanting to really get to know her for who she is, despite how much her mind is hiding in a dark forest. He sees that even if she lives in a cabin like a poor girl, her mind and heart is worth loving. That is why this tale is not anymore silly than another tale !
