Chris Stapleton pays tribute to Prince. This was unexpected by Chris Stapleton and his first time performing this song live.

No, it wouldn't be nearly as good. One of the strengths of this cover version is its raw, gritty and imperfect nature. It's totally heartfelt, sincere, and 100% genuine. The studio version would likely be too polished, clean and so-called perfect. What I wish, instead, was that they would either somehow have already had this version serendipitously recorded, or that he would do another live version of it that would be recorded and released. Live is definitely the way to go, with Chris and this cover. Chris's biggest strength is his live performances. That's where he shines the most. And that's the mark of a truly great singer and musician.

Laura Heath I would say that is correct there's so many genres wrapped up and Chris Stapleton so just say and label him country would be inaccurate but having known the history of music country music gets its roots from Blues but Chris Stapleton is a mix of a lot of things and he can play and sing almost any genre but as you said they do like to label people in stick them in a certain box I guess for marketing reasons but he is a true definition of a musician and singer

I sooo wish Prince had been able to hear/see this rendition when he was alive. I think he would have reeeeeally LOVED it. One of the best covers, ever. I honestly think this version is good enough that it can accurately be said to rival the first rendition done by Sinead O'Connor. And that is coming from someone who absolutely loves what Sinead did with this song. This cover is simply amazing. Bravisimo!!!

I learned this song last year around the time Prince died and was reminded of it yesterday... for some reason it struck me that it's really a country song, or maybe just how close black gospel, older R&B, blues, and country all are to each other. Lo and behold, Chris Stapleton saw that too, last year!

there was this time I walked into a random bar. Maybe 4, 5 people in there. After a while, I took out my cell and sent "Tennesse Whiskey" to the house jukebox, just so I could chill and enjoy my beer. This couple came out of nowhere (apparently, to me) and started slow-dancing, getting into the groove. I'm hard-pressed to find a moment in my life when I was happier than that to see that happen.
