When you're dealing with an abuser they intentionally make everything an issue because they want to create a feeling a helplessness for you so that it's easier to control you. It wouldn't have mattered what he said to her- she was going to make it a problem, because the point is to make you feel like you are the problem. Like nothing you can do is right or good enough, except for those moments that become rarer the longer the relationship goes on where they are the person you fell for that they use as a "reward" for your good behavior. Which motivates you to tolerate the abuse and view everything as your fault, because if you'd just done the thing exactly as they wanted they would be the person you always loved. Except that's not true, because the person you fell in love with never existed.

Donna really needs to get help. She was in an abusive relationship with Maxwell just to turn around and abuse Alex. She’s a classic case of the abused becoming the abuser.
