Donna Lee
x1.5speed is Jaco’s tempo.

Dude well done! Love this solo. First time I heard it it back in 1991 it went straight over my head. Later that year I played the chords under it and it blew me away the way it was so harmonically the absolute shizznizz.

This is brilliant thanks so much for this, I learned this years ago for an exam and could play it at full speed, I used to practice this one piece for like 4-6 hours a day trying to get this perfect, after the exam I just stopped playing it cause I got tired of it. Now I can play around 30% of the song with about 50% accuracy and I've really been wanting to learn it off again over lockdown but I don't want to look through all the tab again and have to play along with jaco's very confusing back beat, so this is just perfect, thank you so much, it's exactly what I've been looking for :)))

Quite a few of the expressions you play here are not really part of the written song, but rather improvs played out of an abundance of enthusiasm in the performance you chose to transcribe. Your transcription is also written in half tempo. Interesting to hear, though.

Nice work and great tone, but it’s way more swung in the original. You’re playing it very straight there, sir. I don’t think the beat helps, as it’s also quite straight. Hope you don’t mind the criticism, because otherwise it’s solid af.
@erikahoppers2525
@erikahoppers2525 3 жыл бұрын
Jaco technically plays it straight too on his first record, at least to my ear. I mean no disrespect, but i disagree because i don't think Jaco was trying to play a bebop feel on this recording. it is expressive and has non metronomic phrasing like swing, but there is still a strong downbeat emphasis to keep with that afro-cuban feel. seems like splitting hairs, but I feel two styles have some key stylistic differences. I feel Jaco's deep understanding of latin and central american folk music can really be heard here. There is something so amazing about how authentically Jaco plays that type of music. To me, the original recording did not sound the same as Jaco playing bebop, but im always up for a civil discussion of different musical ideas, there is a lot of subjectivity to what we do and disagreements can help us all have a better understanding of this thing we all love. while this guys technique isn't there yet, he still seems to understand the feel jaco had on that recording, better than a lot of guys out there with 4x his technical facility. Shit ton of nuance to Jaco's playing, and Kudos to this person for attention to detail. Jaco didn't achieve his status in the Jazz world because of his speed. I think you are right about the beat not helping though, something unquantized would make the phrasing make more sense.
@vooveks
@vooveks 3 жыл бұрын
@@erikahoppers2525 Yeah, it’s not quite swung as much as traditional jazz, but there’s lots of jazzy triplets there. I still think this guy is playing it a lot more straight either way. Hard piece to get right - I couldn’t play it, I’ll admit 🙂.
@erikahoppers2525
@erikahoppers2525 3 жыл бұрын
@@vooveks Yea man, tell me about it. I learned Donna Lee years ago on guitar, but i'm coming back to it now on bass and it is quite humbling. not only was i playing the head wrong for years, I also thought of Jaco's approach to this recording wrong. I always just thought of the congas as somewhat incidental since, to my ear at the time, it sounded like Jaco was imitating Parker. Since then I have taken a closer look at the folk music that influenced Astor Piazzolla, Leo Brouer etc. The music is improvised, driving and articulate in the same way bebop is, and has similar roots to the music that ultimately influenced swing, but the two incarnations have unique qualities about them that Jaco seemed to address and even, in his own way, made a joke about throughout the recording. It wasn't until I slowed it down that I realized that everything before the solo break seems to emphasize the downbeat, and there is a moment of swing before the drums come back in. After that he seems to use the two feels as if he knew two dialects of the same language. The man had an intimate relationship with music, while most of us (myself included) are merely peeping toms. Sorry for the crass analogy, but in my head its fitting.
