I feel in love with Donna when I listened to I FEEL LOVE back in 1977. I was in sixth grade... and my love only grows stronger. Donna. there will always be a YOU! Love you endlessly!

Pam Grier, Gloria Gaynor, Minnie Ripperton, the list goes on and on. Iconic Brunettes honestly opens you up to a wider range of people than blondes.
I love how you pointed out how homophobic and racist the "disco sucks" movement was. It wasn't until I was watching a Todd in the Shadows video about Cameo and how the public was reluctant to trust another black artist that I realized what the real issue with disco was because I personally love disco and didn't understand the hate. It's not that it sucked. Sure, there were bad song i.e disco duck, but that's true of every genre. They just didn't like the main audience for disco.
@rosechardonnay5351 Жыл бұрын
It was a very homophobic and racist movement because they felt that gays and minorities were the primary demographic of Disco music even though lots of different people listened to it. Also at that time there was a bit of a stigma against Disco music amongst some people because they viewed Disco as inferior or lower than other forms of music because it was created electronically using synthesizers, drum machines, and mix tapes rather than actual musical instruments. It was commonly referred to as "canned music." It's funny how people's perceptions change because now here we are 40 years later and most music is created electronically nowadays 🤷♀️

I never saw the Disco Sucks movement being discussed through this lens. So this video and your comment are super insightful!!
@beevonerd Жыл бұрын
Its still happening tbh. House music etc, the whole dance genre is only awarded to white producers at the Grammys for the most part. But never the artists who influenced them. Very sad to see. For every Diplo and Skrillex, there's a poc they learned from who gets no recognition. 🤷🏿♂️

My first visit to the Disco was in 1978. Coming from a very small town, it was like stepping into Oz. Black and chrome decor, mirror balls and smoke machine and strobe lights. People dressed to the nines...guys in tuxedos, gals in slinky shiny polyester dresses...the height of glamour at the time. Disco never died in the gay clubs... Good times...
@hollyreilly2035 Жыл бұрын
I never clicked so fast! I have Donna Summer’s music on my running playlist. I love to hear your history lessons as you style wigs! I remember watching the episode from RPDR in season 13 about the disco challenge and I was screaming at the screen when the queens didn’t know any disco artists! I didn’t live through that era so it’s really interesting to hear about things like the “Disco Sucks” movement and that awful radio DJ who started it.

I begged my mom to buy me Donna Summer's Once Upon A Time and Live and More when they first came out. She is so beautiful in the pictures on those albums! I would listen to them for hours. Brian Eno tells the story that David Bowie called him on the phone one day, gushing that he had heard the future of music, and then played him I Feel Love. Damn right!

Donna Summer is my favorite music artist of all time so thanks for a wonderful video. For being so young, it’s very impressive how much you know about some of the greatest eras of all time, 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. It’s so much fun watching your videos and your commentaries really make them pop. Some of the things you say really crack me up which makes them even better as humor is so important in these times. Keep up the great work!! PS. You have come so far from Season 9 and seriously speaking, you should have won AS8 😌😌

The world is a better place because Donna Summer once lived here. She is . . . THE Q U E E N of DISCO and beyond reproach who is arguably one of the most important women in history - just ask any Dj, club owner, dancer, Drag Queen, club goer or dance enthusiast. I cannot imagine a world where Donna Summer with Giorgio Moroder behind her and the Bee Gees didn't exist. Between the both of them, the Disco sound was refined, ushering in that particular dance era of which they wrote just about every other song playing on the radio at the time. Nobody has ever held a candle to the Legendary Disco Diva Superstar that she was and nobody ever will. You look really good with the Donna inspired wig recreation, Jaymes. You're just a sexy, swinging brunette that's hot to trot and loves to Disco because she's a party girl extraordinaire. CHEERS!💋

While I don't dispute that a big part of the whole "disco sucks" thing was about racism and homophobia, an even bigger part was that it was just played OUT by 1980. It was EVERYWHERE from '76 on, it was in EVERYTHING, and the MOST ridiculous people/groups/things hopped on that bandwagon until the wheels busted off. YES, people still wanted to dance, that's what FUNK and NEW WAVE were for!

I remember reading that Donna Summer was anti-gay and I had to stop listening to her. I LOVE Donna. There's Barbara, Donna, Gaga. When I finally heard HER say she didn't say that hateful nonsense and showed how she performed with gaysv and drag queens, I immediately put Gratest Hits II on!
