Hi Donn, congratulations on the project. I would add one more thing: a small switch on the log transport cart, so you can only activate the saw start button when the cart is back. To prevent the saw from inadvertently hitting it when it is running.
@markhopes49244 жыл бұрын
@Nicola Prisco. it’s hard to criticise something as well built as this being home made with mostly hand tools. But when I was watching the first run video and was thinking if Don got out of sinc with the saw it would eventually hit the travel bed. Simple limit switch would do the trick.
@romiolover68524 жыл бұрын

Switch would be great! Human errors are so simple to occur (tired, mind in another direction, problems at home etc)! My buddy was working in the woods on chainsawing. He had a worker (had 10-15 years of experience) who said "i don't need no safety pants", buddy of mine then said: "then don't come back here". Literally the next day, he appeared with safety pants on and sawed into the leg, pants saved him with no scratch on the leg! Safety, safety, safety!!!!

I am seriously impressed. Now that I can see it all working together, everything makes sense. I think I imagined you would pull this out into the woods where you were felling the trees, but I see now that's unnecessary. The oiler is great by the way. Perfection in design is to make something only as complex as it needs to be and no more. This is pretty much that!

Super awesome build, from conception to start and finish. Now you just need to park your wood hauler just below the wood dropout area so its loaded for you automatically. Or make the next series a fold down / telescoping conveyor to take the processed wood into a wood hauler that lays out the wood in straight stacked rows. Very impressive ideas you have and execution of the builds.

I had to save this video series. Great job. Lots of great ideas. Like all the other armchair engineers I can come up with several upgrades/mods to what I plan on building. I will be replacing the sled with a chain system, like you would find at a car wash to move the log forwards. Then like others have suggested a limit switch to stop the log at the correct position, before the chain saw can be activated. I like the way you are bringing the logs up, would have liked to see it under the load of those big logs.
@DonnDIY4 жыл бұрын
Not gonna use it for lifting those big logs, it's not meant for it - I rarely get such logs for firewood, I might not even use these big logs shown in the video for firewood, rip'em up to planks maybe.

and also i don't know if ppl get how relevant your fabrication projects are, i'm sure many do... but to me now living out in the woods, basically in the bush at this point, this is bushcraft at its finest. utilization of whats at hand, incorporation of simple precision machining when necessary, basically every rural homestead should eventually have or develop the tools and skills you're using in your fabrication projects. i'm surprised i don't see more of this kind of video in america honestly.

I've seen professional models made that dump into pallet sized bins similar to the wire cages on IBC 400 gallon tanks. Wire allows wood to continue drying. I used to use 30 gallon drums as they could be rolled into smaller areas and kept the wood waste dust and bark from being as messy in the house.
@sheldonbrooksugarhouse76124 жыл бұрын
Donn, I like your creativity especially how you utilized the single motion of the splitter to handle three functions, genius. One thing I don’t think you will be happy with is the chain bar oiling arrangement. When I initially built my firewood processor I used the same gravity feed arrangement. The problem I kept having is the oil port would get plugged with sawdust and the oil feed didn’t have enough pressure to clear it so I would have to disassemble the chainsaw to clean the port. I solved it by adding a cheap electric fuel pump that actuated with the chainsaw. I control the flow volume with a needle valve. I love watching your videos, wish I had your skills.

Looks great - I had an engineering workshop and this was really down my street. But one thing needed is a limit/micro-switch to disable the saw till the bed has passed. I notice it starts up when the bed is still moving back and you had to hesitate to bring the blade down manually. One slip of the mind and your chain will become a metal saw!! But I'm sure you know this as well.
