@rorz9992 жыл бұрын
Unquantised has never been part of the 303 workflow/sound, and I'd rather use an external reverb and keep costs down, as opposed to a built-in one which probably wouldn't be very good anyway
@demonicsweaters2 жыл бұрын
Actually, the architecture is quite different, but better. You couldn't really 'play' the 303 like a keyboard, but the keys were used for programming sequences. This goes for the Behringer clone as well. Having a playable keyboard on this alone makes it much better IMO. Also, neither the original nor the Behringer have a delay built in.
@rodmorrison472 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Also, while the distortion on the Behringer is a useful addition and does sound pretty good it can be hard to balance the clean and distorted sounds. I prefer to use an old stompbox and compressor for a more balanced transition between clean and distorted. I think a delay or reverb would have been a better option - and this has got it.

Delay is one of the cornerstones of good acid, so it's great to see it built in, but it doesn't seem like a very useful implementation. It's a little hard to tell from this video but it sounds like it's not tempo-synced, which would be a tragedy. One of the main reasons to build a delay into a machine like this is it would be easy to make it tempo-synced, and there don't seem to be many inexpensive options for doing that in an external unit. Design-wise, it looks nice, but that grid of identical buttons on the right with hard-to-read labels is a poor choice for usability in a darkened room.

Cheap(er) good quality products create more musicians, and thus more revenue for everybody. And I don't think this little device would "steal" any customers from the Big Boys. Hi! This Donner Syn Bass looks interesting and if you hadn't featured it, I would never have known it existed. However, I love my Roland Cloud TB-303 vst, a lifetime key is $150, such a great sounding and productive vst instrument - instant acid. Not sure if I missed it in the review, but one of the key undocumented features of the original 303 hardware was how it would randomly populate the sequencer patterns when you replaced the battery (or so I'm told); I've discovered the random features on the Roland Cloud TB-303 are incredibly good for coming up with an acid groove and making tons of simple variations on the same groove, and you can drag the patterns into your daw as either midi clips or rendered audio; now I gotta admit someone gave me one of those behr 303 clones, but I much prefer the results I get working with the Roland Cloud TB-303.

That being said, i still do appreciate on-board effects and what they offer too, and like the idea that it has them built in so you don’t have to use them, but can if you want to without anything external.

I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on this synth, compared to the Behringer TD-3. The TD-3 is even cheaper, and seems a bit more authentic to the 303 experience (albeit with some interesting additions), but I'm too unskilled with it to understand whether or when the Donner or the Behringer shine over the other...

1:49 maybe it's because i'm not old enough and wasn't there, but to me what is weird is the way it was marketed, a replacement for peoples ? you're trying to sell musician something thatt replace them ? and on top of that i have a hard time imagining that it was the original purpose, to me you have to be into music and tech to build something like that so they probably tried to experiment and jam with it, idk

Chicago Acid House, late '80s, came before Detroit coined Techno, early '90s. The Roland TB 303 is more synonymous with Acid House, although it made a comeback with Acid Techno some years later

I love the way musicians always suggest adding more controls/sounds/features/oscillators and interface connections while still thinking all of these additions won't change the price. Thanks for the informative review. OFC it raises the question which was often asked in the 1980s - should I buy this as it might become a classic. I purchased the TR606 back when it was released but not the bass unit, I think this unit would be a good match sound wise for my 606 without paying the going price for a 303.

yeah because there's no cheap 303 clones out there....

Should I buy this cuz it might be a classic? Noone should ask that.

The T-8 adds allll of the features. At barely any extra cost. And you can actually buy it outside the states.

@@OttosTheName my PC has all the features of every synth ever made.

The argument here is that features cost money. Yes your pc has more features, but is it under 200 bucks? I kinda doubt it.

Love the sequencer editor!

Love that it's just JSON for sequence data files opens it up for integration with other software editors if someone wanted to. Weird the knobs don't do CC Though it would encourage you to get more hands on with it

Looks like the UI is MUCH better than what Behringer did. Good luck programming anything complex on the TB-3 without a laptop.

I entered a pattern manually (i.e., without the software) on my TD-3 once and I wanted to gouge my eyes out by the time I was done. It's so awful.

Genuinely love the weirdly organic sounds of the 303: when I can, I will 100% pick this puppy up.

Donner rocks, it'll be cool if they start making other synths.

Picked this up as my first hardware synth after playing with some midi controllers for months. Your video was a huge help in getting familiar with it. I am enjoying experimenting with it, but I will hit a wall soon I feel. I get a little frustrated when building shorter patterns, 4- and 8-steps for example. I think once you go past a step, there’s no way to clear out the rest of the 16 steps without inserting rests. So if I’m on an 8 step sequence and accidentally add a note to 9, whoops now you have a 9 step for the rest of that patterns life. No way to trim as far as I can tell. But no regrets. This is a very fun machine for someone who grew up listening to “techno”. “Everybody needs a 303”

There is an old saying that goes : Do not use Behringer products ever unless you really have to. But there is an even more powerful saying that says "Do not even consider looking at a Donner product ever regardless of the immediate danger you're facing".

I want to like this but it looks extremely limited. Is there no attack control? For $150+ there are some very basic things missing. I say that the korg volca keys is head and shoulders above this for less money.

Cool! I've been thinking about a 303 lately... I'm kinda old school and love that Acid House sound! This looks like a very cost-effective option!
