There are so many of these superstitions. Rarely do they conflict with each other. Little things we do, like setting out purse down never on the floor become habits we live with life long. Some of the older supersitions are common sense for hygiene as well, and serve a purpose for better health habits. There are several about sweeping and how its done as not to sweep the good luck out of a house. The ones that have nature in them such as the leaves on top of a tree falling off or the live stocl animals being fatter in November might well be proven to have some scientific backing and way back people or a person took notice of the connection and it became one of these superstitions. Nature is smart and adapts to survive meeting needs doing things a certain way. Most of these are very familiar to me and a few I never heard of. Religion does play a part in these too. The Bible is definitely a part to some of these superstitions. Religion has deep rooted belief systems in those living in these beautiful countrysides. It is a way of life devoted to studying God's word. Life with faith includes references to the Bible about nature and being mindful of "signs" of events. These tales and truths are a way of life and not considerd idle superstitions. It is a tight bind with The Lord's good ways and in communites it bonds people with each other and the land with all its gifts and wisdoms. These can be wonderful ways and cherished insights among people.

Thank you Sir I really enjoyed this. I'm an Australian with British, Welsh and Irish ancestors and I grew up hearing of most of these. Getting the shivers meant someone was walking over your grave not a rabbit, but means the same thing I think. I also know that if all the cattle are laying down it's going to rain. A pink sky at night is a farmer's delight and a pink sky in the morning is a farmer's warning, ( bad weather ) don't put new shoes on a table as it's bad luck, never open a umbrella inside as that's bad luck. There are just so many. As you do I tell my son these things too and I'm sure he'll pass them on to his kids. Take care my friend and much love to you and your family.

I laughed out loud when you said, that the persimmon seed didn’t look like a spoon, it looked like a shovel, and that was not good!, I presume you were thinking about it looking like a SNOW SHOVEL!.. lol. We have been seeing some very strange animal behavior for a couple of months now, and we are thinking it might be a bad winter ahead. About a month and a half ago, I bought my Farmers Almanac. I haven’t had a chance to read it yet, but I’m looking forward to it, and we will see what they say the weather will bring here in West Texas. Our winter was very bad last year. Some of those old superstitions make sense. That one about the snow, well, conditions are right. My grandfather always cut the tails off his fattening hogs. Said you were fattening the tail if you left it on. My father said Grandad could always fatten his hogs about 2 weeks faster than he could if they penned them the same day. The old man went by the signs too. They didn't get their corn planted because of rain. They planted it late and it did well, big crop. Dad commented on it. Grandad said, "yeah it'll brow and make but the ears won't lay down. The ends will rot." That's exactly what happened. Dad went to visit an old neighbor and they heard an owl hoot in the daytime. The old man commented, " that owl's saying it'll rain this time tomorrow." It didn't and Dad asked about it. "Huh," the man said, "young owl, didn't know what he was talkin' about."

Donnie, before people could read, they watched the SIGNS cuz that’s what they had to go by. And learned and passed it on. I think we took on the label “religious “ but truly, we’re spiritual. We honored people, places and things, and feared some others. For example FIRE will keep you warm, cook your food and lots of other things. But, it will also burn you. Again , thank you for sharing. My daughter just bought her annual Farmer’s Almanac. My husband was born in Bradley County, Tn. His folks were founders of Waynesville, NC and listening to you is almost like hearing him. He read the signs and was always close to nature. People don’t understand why I prefer the mountains to the beach.

@Jeremy 77my husband’s grandmother was a Bates who married first a Spicer, was widowed and then married a Battle. My father in law was offered the position of sheriff in Benton. This was in the 1940’s. Visited Benton several times in the late 90s. My husband always said his mom had lived on Little Frog Mtn. He remembered Reliance as one of her addresses. When we went to Reliance there was almost nothing there.

Hey Donnie it's me Bruce again just wanted to add something my girlfriend is a descendant of the Cherokee. Some of my relatives lived in the plank house's that are on top of rocks for support and I have bathe in a tin tub by a wood stove and used a outhouse. Ok I've seen cows lying on the ground by the fence closest to the road and it will rain soon seen it happen many times at least near by. Thanks again for sharing the video

I’ve never lived in the Appalachian Mountains but, I’ve heard of many of these 40 superstitions. My father-in-law, born and raised in the city, had several of his own superstitions that he very much believed in. I guess everyone has one or more, no matter where they live or come from.

One thing that isn't superstition is knowing the family that you're marrying into. Use to all the locals knew each other and your family had a reputation in the community. You didn't see many divorces in these communities. Now days people go off to college and don't know anything about the family they're getting into. I married a local girl whose parents were peaceful Christians that never divorced and my parents were peaceful Christians that never divorced. We all went to the same Baptist church. We've been together 38 years, I married up. She would probably like to leave and who could blame her... :)

I once knew a woman that had a birthmark that was identical to the outline of the sailboat. You could plainly see that it was a sailboat even at first glance of the birthmark . When her mother was pregnant with her, her and her husband were out sailing one day and something happened for her to lose her balance and she fell off the boat. It was so strange to me when she told me the story behind the birthmark. I had seen it when we were out swimming or laying in the sun or something to that nature, but I saw the birthmark and said "that looks just like a sailboat" and then she explained the story. Birthmarks of this nature truly fascinate me. But I do know this happens because I've heard of other people's stories , telling about how their birthmarks had happened from some sort of accident or trauma while they were pregnant.

I grew up and still live in middle TN, and we have the same saying and superstitions here as well. My Mom wouldn't let me even pick vegetables to can when I was on my monthly cycle. Sometimes I used that excuse to get out of picking vegetables! The wart and string one I had never heard of, wished I had. When I was small I had a big wart on my finger, and my Daddy went and caught a big grasshopper and it " chewed and spit brown stuff on it". Of course I screamed my head off, but the wart went away. My father in Law has coon hounds. It never fails and is common now in The community that if one of his hounds begins to moan a distinct eerie moan, someone we know will die. I can say that seems to be true. One of those hounds will continue to moan ever night, that same eerie moan until someone passes away, it is something that gives ya shivers to hear.

I loved your 40th rare mountain superstition! But even though these superstitions may have been handed down from generation to generation. And some people may believe just because they don't want to take a chance not to believe in case it is true, something had to have happened coincidence or not that created the superstitions in the first place. And it could have been enough coincidence or repeated patterns that they saw that caused most people to believe the superstition to have some kind of fact basis. Just like urban legends, something had to have happened to start the urban legend in the first place whatever that may have been. Now granted there's that thing called the grapevine where one person hears something until something different. But still something had to have happened at some point whether big or small that created those superstitions in the first place. And that may be why generation after generation they still believe. But thank you so much again for bringing back so many memories of my childhood growing up and all the superstitions I remember hearing. And yes they were God fearing Bible carrying Christians and still believed in these old times superstitions. Thanks again and God bless!

A very good friend of mind that lived in Unicoi County or Erwrin or Irwin all his life talked exactly like you. He passed away a few yrs ago, only in his early forties and I miss him. He could do anything from logging to sawmilling, welding to mechanics. You sound exactly like him. Love your videos

I am IN LOVE with the Appalachia mountains. I live in Mississippi, but have never felt like I belong here.!! When I go to the mountains I am so happy I can't contain myself.!!!!! I FEEL LIKE I HAVE FINALLY COME HOME. I HAD TO HAVE LIVED THERE IN THE PAST. The mountains are the only place I'm happy. I didn't grow up in Appalachia. I grew up SW of Atlanta about an hour drive to Alabama, but I remember seeing horseshoes hung up occasionally. Sometimes over a door, on the side of a barn, on a fence post, or even on a post in the middle of a field. I never knew there was a superstition behind it.

I've heard of the turtle letting go when it thunders, and about 2 more I've already forgotten, lol. I never believed in these superstitions, I do believe in God. It was fun hearing those old wives' tales growing up, though! Keep up the good work Mr. Laws!

Another great one, Donnie. I've heard of many these, and others I hadn't. For those who like 70's soft pop music, they may remember a song, "Wildfire", (1975), by Michael Martin Murphy. Murphy must know a lot these same superstitions undoubtedly; he talks about planting by the dark of the Moon. at one point. It's a ghost story, really, the narrator lost his lady, and her horse (Wildfire). He sings about the hoot owl by his window though he says six nights in a row. But he knows he's going to be passing soon, and joining his lady. I think many of these can be found, as you noted, all over the world, really. A variation of the snapping turtle is that a pinching "crawldaddy" won'y turn loose til it thunders.

I grew up with superstitions because my whole family was superstitious. Every time we moved, while I was growing up, my mom would always leave the room behind when we were moving. My Grandmama and my Mama believed the superstition of "N ever take the broom that you used in your last home. You must leave it at that home and buy a new one for the new home. The superstition of cooking Black Eyed Peas and Turnip Greens or Collard Greens was mandatory for every Christmas. The Black Eyed peas represent loose change and the Turnip or Collard Greens represent money. (Paper Money) Thank you so much Mr Donnie for taking the time to make your videos with all of the time that you put into every single video, like Proof Reading, Editing, etc. etc.etc. I know it takes a lot of work you have to put in for just one video. Before I start watching it, I just wanted to say thanks again Mr. Laws, yours are a people myself and others have always had an interest in but didn't know how to go about the anthropology without poking our noses around like tourists, and me especially because I have recently become handicap, and cannot visit just yet, perhaps in another 10 years but by then these things may be too watered down - it's best what you do, remembering and recording etc. for us and future times - though maybe all this recent interest will catch on as it kind of is little by little and become understood again the little pieces which were forgotten. All I know is folk medicine and traditions from the mountain people in your area must be addressed and preserved sought out and recorded at all cost. 🔥your friends in Chicago🔥
