I had a girlfriend around this time (1967) that had long beautiful auburn hair and when we would hung out in her room, she was always crocheting something. She was very fast, and her stitches were perfectly formed & spaced. So, one day I asked her, how do you do that? "Come here and I'll show you". Long story short...I was all thumbs, I couldn't get it right at all and I remember her looking at me, saying, "you've got to pickup every stitch" otherwise it gets to be a mess. I think Donovan must have had a similar experience and just started rhyming lines that went with this statement.

We all still have it. :) I really lucked out. I was born in 1960. With six olders siblings and parents who all liked music, I was already paying attention to what they listened to by the time I was three (fall of 63). Then The Beatles came along, the British invasion happened, folk rock, psychedelic, hard rock,... Back then I had no idea how lucky I was, it was just the way things were. Then as the 70's went on things started changing for the worse (for my tastes, not for everyones). But for me those first 10 years or so were just incredible. The industry is so different now and times have changed, so we'll never see anything quite like that again. But I sure enjoyed the ride, and still listen to all that stuff.

This track oozes so much atmosphere. As important as the chords are, the slinkily arhythmic guitar and bass lines are what give this song its paranoid swagger. The way the downbeat gets subsumed by backbeat and syncopation in the verses is awesome and adds a lot to the track’s uneasy groove. “Sure is strange” indeed

In which I reveal my age: I vividly remember when this was released. I bought the album it is on immediately. It was 1966. I have always loved it. Dripping with atmosphere and suggested, hinted at meanings. And such a great sound. I still have the LP I bought at the time, but I haven’t played it in years. This is the first time I have listened to it on KZbin, and I have to say it amazes me! It must have been remastered or remixed at some point because I’m hearing all kinds of things in it, various instruments that jump out at me, that I never noticed before, or at least never paid much attention to. Now they slap me in the face! It is almost like hearing a new song, but with the comfortable familiarity of one you’ve known and loved for decades. I’ve just listened to it three times in a row, and I’m about to go for a fourth. Thank you!

For me, it IS a new song. I can't believe it took me 50 years to finally listen to it! Right now is my first time, and I'm glad to hear this. I had a friend in jr. high whose dad was a Seattle Police Officer and he would work the concerts so things didn't get out of control. The first concert I went to was Donovan. He came out in a long white robe and there were flowers covering with entire stage. I've never forgotten how cool he was. Amazing guy!

@@markevan1__ You have to remember the greedy, grasping music industry was filled with, ah, "promoters" seeking to get get rich quick off these highly talented young musicians of the 60's. The problem with Donovan was he couldn't be pegged into one genre to be marketed. He was a talented unicorn, so the industry that LOVED the Beatles, didn't embrace him.
