From the new series of re-recordings commemorating the 30th anniversary of the release of Don Ross' first CD, BEARING STRAIGHT. "Catherine" was originally composed in 1986, and dedicated to Don's aunt, who got to hear some of the piece a few days before passing away. The original version on Bearing Straight featured guest musicians Hugh Marsh on violin and David Piltch on upright bass. Don has re-recorded "Catherine" on a few previous occasions: Once with full band on his CD, THIS DRAGON WON'T SLEEP, a solo baritone guitar version on his HURON STREET recording, and a solo live version on his LIVE IN YOUR HEAD CD. This is the first solo studio recording of the tune on regular-pitched guitar, and played the way the piece has morphed over the 33 years since Don composed it.
Don recorded this version in his studio in Nova Scotia, Canada, using a Røde NT4 stereo microphone. He also recorded his K&K transducer and rolled off the high EQ and boosted the bottom end slightly to give an even punchier low end.
Don plays BENETEAU guitars, ERNIE BALL Strings, and uses K&K pickups.

Don’t know if you’ll ever see this Don but your music along with Antoine Dufour was the soundtrack to the best years of my life, and this song in particular brings me back to such a special place. Quite simply one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written and should have millions of views and streams. I was taking a drive a couple days ago and I came to the conclusion...Don Ross is my favorite musician. No one has inspired me more. I can listen to his music idly. I can listen to it actively for inspiration. I can pick up my guitar and play along if I'm feeling good. I can listen to it when I'm down. There's just so many layers for me when I hear it. It's technically impressive all while being easy to listen to, which isn't a common blend for these techy guitar piece players. I'm not sure how finely tuned his pieces are or if it's just where his natural talent takes him, but it just works on a lot of levels for me.

Don Ross is the best Don of the acoustic guitar....how crucial it is to have these music companies which record and distribute/sell recordings of these great musicians...came across Don Ross from a cassette tape when I visited some Naga tribal college boys rented room in Hyderabad back in 1999..the music from Narada's Masters of the Acoustic Guitar was playing from that tiny cassette player on that messy floor. I knew at that moment this was the kind of music my soul has been longing for...then went straight and bought from Planetwaves music store....lost it...then bought again as I moved across India working in Indian Railways. Then thanks to the internet....O those precious 30 second audio clips on candyrat website etc etc as I didn't have the dollars to buy from india those years...into the world of alternate tunings...came to know Don Ross was coming to Bangalore November 2009..Me and friends booked those expensive (for our standards)Rs 1500 tickets and came up from Mysore to see the don Don Ross of acoustic steel guitar...and had a picture taken with him ...and thank heavens for youtube for all these videos..and thank you most of all Don Ross for sharing your music to the world. I have never been to Chile. I played a festival in Hungary before Covid and one of the other performers was Andres Godoy. We talked about me coming to Chile one day. Who knows? Maybe it can still happen sometime.
