Thank you for the video.. just acquired a 1993 model with a probably not original 12.5 hp L head briggs. Did the basics already, carburetor clean ans reassemble, fuel system clean fluid change and plug to the small engine, she needed a coil, fires up and runs great. Next, clutch cable, new friction disc and grease and maintenance. Already added flat frees to the front and a new ignition switch. So we’re on the way… thank you again!

This was excellent. I just bought an old one and you have shown me very much on how to get it back to service. It's completely missing the boots on the axle, BUT, still shifts, so I found it at the right time.

Thanks for posting!! Hit the Like and subscribe if ya want! I do have other vids on this or these machines! I just got my older one working, I do have the boots but not enough time for the installation this season! Stay Tuned for that. Although I hate running it without the boots, I'm keeping it clean for now and actually using the machine every few weeks as I have other machines to use.

Thanks for this video. This is exactly whats happened to my Snapper. It had damaged boots when I bought it. I accidently snapped the shift lever today trying too hard to push it into gear. Looks like I will need to follow all the steps in your video and fit some new boots

Thank you for the education Arch! Being now retired, and looking for "projects" to do, and record for my little KZbin channel, I'm pulling out my old Snapper to go through it. It has been under the house for pushing 30 years now. I think it must be an 80-something model, not sure. 8hp, HiVac with rear mounted grass catcher. My (now ex) wife traded my 67 C10 stepside pickup to her sister who lives in Kentucky for it back in the late 80's, and we used it for a few years. New house we moved to had much bigger house, much less yard, so a rider wasn't as useful any more. However, it should be a fun project, and spending time working on it will keep me from hanging out in bars and chasing loose wimmens now.

The friction wheel was preventing it from shifting. If yours can shift while engine is not running then you may need to lower the friction plate/pully.

It's in the Operators manual, the Mower frame serial plate is on the mower frames, different places per the model, that model number will aid in getting the Operators Manual & parts manual, DON'T treat ALL Snapper Rear Engine Riders the same, they look similar from year to year but there ARE differences, parts should NOT be interchanged from Model to model UNLESS the part numbers are the same

I just purchased one of these a month ago. Mowed with it three times now . The problem im having is 1st gear barely moves the machine, the other gears work fine as far as i can tell. I replaced the clutch wheel but didn't help. I moved the clutch spring so it has more tension, still nothing. Im guessing i will maybe have to adjust the drive disc but seems to work fine in all other gears. Dont know. Could this be a transmission issue???
@TheNovaJohn
@TheNovaJohn Ай бұрын
Well I cant see what ya have so its a guess but If the disc is cleaned like I show in this one and another video a released recently then my guess is its an adjustment. People bang into stuff and also mess around. I find sooo many issues due to this. It may also be that the rubber wheel isn't properly hitting or rubbing the drive disc in that position. Pull the plug so you can spin things easier and get it on its back with a good flashlight and run it through all positions. Look close, be picky. Put ya glasses on lol! Good luck and have some fun doing it! Ya got a great deal for a nice machine, your already ahead!

Nice job Arch we have as our personal self propelled mower a commercial Snapper similar drive system but exposed from the top. Great minds think alike! From the moment I realized there was no belly pan like a snowblower I kept thinking throughout the entire video how to fabricate the belly pan that should have been on it from the factory. Even though there’s all these boots and access plugs it’s still an entire area that should have been double protected by a good cover, especially since it’s not like a snowblower that operates in a clean environment. I’m thinking an old curb find washer or dryer or an old tower computer would have larger sheet metal sections ready to cut up. Just don’t forget small drain holes at the lowest points with rubber grommets. That’s my two cents! 😉👍🔧

With the wheel that has the rubber on it, for the drive. Is the rubber belt bit, Meant to spin independently from the wheel? I have a snapper mower, and got barely any drive. @@TheNovaJohn how did you move the clutch to move the unit over? I thought the ‘gears’ were kind of always in mesh with the friction wheel - ie., that was the “clutch” (sorry to be a bit thick here - haven’t tipped it up yet)
@TheNovaJohn
@TheNovaJohn Жыл бұрын
I don't remember the shots in the video,,when the clutch is thrown, it lifts the rubber wheel up and off enough to allow the traversing of the rubber wheel over the metal disc. The rest of the system is in mesh like ya said. That was stuck initially! at one point I had to stand up on the table to reach the control pedal. One of the BIGGEST MISCONCEPTIONS about these mowers is that ALL the Rear Engine Riders are the same, I worked at the factory 40+ years & I see so much BAD INCORRECT advice in these YT clips, FIRST BEFORE you begin working on these take the Model info off of the Serial Decal that is on the mower frame, that Model number will help to get a Owners & Operators manual & parts manual, get familiar with the parts & their names & adjustments
