For those who did not understand why she takes 9C5 or 9C4, think of it like this: As she explains, the shortest path should consist of 5 Right and 4 Up steps. So one of the simplest shortest path will be: R R R R R U U U U. Then based on her previous explanations, we need to identify in how many ways can we order these ( similar to ANAGRAMS problem). So we have 9 items with 5 Rs and 4Us. That gives us, 9!/(5!*4!). This in turn is equal to 9C5 as well as 9C4. Hope this helps. For the presenter - THANK YOU VERY MUCH! These will be really useful for my students :)

I solved it in another way. She reaches her destination either from the left or from below. This mean that there is 1 possibility only from each one of these points. We can write a 1 at each of them. When we add them we get 2 in the corner opposite to the end-destination. There are 2 possible ways she can take from here. From the right-most, down-most corner there is only 1 possible way. Thus, this applies for the squares above as well, since turning left would be a longer path. We write 1:s at these points. The same applies from the upper-most, left-most corner. Now we just add the rest of them: 1+2=3, 1+3=4, 3+3=6 etc. The numbers are the total number of possible ways from each particular point. We get the units, the natural numbers, the triangular numbers etc. known from Pascal's triangle. In the left-most, down-most corner we get the sum 126, which is the correct answer. This sum can be calculated with the formula (n+m-1)!/((m!(n-1)!), where m is the number row in Pascal's triangle and n stands for the n:th number in the series. (5+5-1)!/((5!)(5-1)!)=126

It may be useful for someone to understand.. For the shortest path as we calculated we need to travel 9 steps and out of these 9 , 5 Should be right and 4 should be up. So using formula we can use it in 2 ways. (i) First no of ways we can select right and than no of ways we can select up. 9C5 X 4C4 => 9C5 (as 4C4 is anyway 1.) ==> first no of ways from 9 steps select 5 right and after that as only 4 steps are renaming and we need to select 4 up so 4C4. (ii) First no of ways we can select up and than no of ways we can select right. Explanation same as (i) 9C4 X 5C5 as 5C5 is 1 so total = 9C4

Why we don't multiply 9C5 with 9C4? To reach destination, it has to travel both UP & Right, but why are suggesting to take either UP or Right?
@sanskaraswani91555 жыл бұрын
Same doubt
@seselis15 жыл бұрын
If you go "Up" and arrange 4 ways out of 9 to do so, you already consider the 5 left options of going "Right". It means that whenever you seek a different path of going up, you automatically have to go "Right". Generally, you would need to multiply those two, but not in case of 9C4*9C5, because here the number 9 means 4 "Ups" and 5 "Rights" in the shortest path ITSELF, and not all the possible "Ups" and "Rights" across the WHOLE MAP. It would be hard to count all the possible "Ups" and "Rights" because of certain circumstances. For example, if you instantly went 5 blocks right, there would be 4 "Ups" left (that would imply 1 option), whereas if you firstly went 1 block right you'd still have 4 "Ups" left to cover (but you'd have more options to do so). Thus, the 'C' formula would be different (tbh it wouldn't even be the 'C' formula)

In the last video, if I take the first approach and as per the common English, the girl has to travel 5 steps - RIGHT and 4 steps UP to get those candies, which is for me 9C5 * 9C4 right? I have a question, you see while solving using combinations, shouldn't we multiply 9C5 and 9C4, since we shall be using both the paths.
@kajalesanjay41197 жыл бұрын
Karuna Meena same doubt
@MinHanhLee6 жыл бұрын
I think it's already accounted for. Since if there are 5 units to go right out of 9 units, and we can only go right or up for the shortest paths, there should be 9-5=4 units to go up within 9C5 already. Same with 9C4.
@raji_fairy6 жыл бұрын
I'm also having the same doubt
@sabiqsabry6 жыл бұрын
hey i might be late here but anyways... ; since there are 9 units as the shortest route we use this value and take the combination of 4 units (width) or 5 units (length) and take either value and get the amount of the shortest route that can be taken to reach the gift shop..
@Agent58Rex4 жыл бұрын
Think of it like this way, there are nine units so total combination is 9!. But only five of them are in the right. So the 4 units, that are upwards, are not filled in the empty space of right so we divide it by 4!. Also, the order of the 5 units in the right doesn't matter so we divide by 5!. So it becomes computation as 9C5 =9! / (5!.4!)=9! / { 5!.(9-5)! } Even after this, if you didn't get it then use the logical method explained afterwards in the video to solve it.
