I feel like there’s a lot of complaining and criticism in the comments this week, so I just wanted to add a word of encouragement and give a quick and genuine “thank you” for all you are both doing. I’ve learned SO much from you over the past several years and have been taught about a personal, loving Jesus in a way that was not taught to me in my youth. I’ve learned of a Jesus who knows me and helps me through the hard things mortality calls me to go through - and these last couple of years have been a difficult period where I’ve been asked to go through some really hard things. I’ve clung to Him and will be forever grateful for my increase in relationship. I appreciate the community and camaraderie you’ve built. You have helped me feel like I have a place where I fit in a church community and know there are other like-minded people out there. David, I met you briefly at Pinners this year and was so impressed by your sincere love for people. I listened to your presentation later that day, and it has stuck with me - particularly the offhanded comment you gave when you said, “Jesus is with me wherever I go.” I love that confidence and declaration and have thought many times since that I want to emulate that example and live in a way that I am confident that Jesus is with me wherever I go. I don’t know if you’ll ever read this comment with the busyness of all you have going on, but I wanted to just say thank you for sharing your goodness, your light, your knowledge in a way that is helping others transform lives. ❤❤

"Launch out into the deep" made think of how much do we trust Christ? "Let down your nets" made me think if how much faith do I have in Him? If we trust in Him and focus our faith on Him, He can make so much more out of our lives to where they are overflowing with blessings. I love that Emily pointed out there is sacrifice in what we are asked to do, but then He changes us. He changes our direction, our focus, our convictions. We will each be asked to leave something behind. Part of our old selves. Sometimes the biggest part of who we thought we were will be abandoned, so that we can become one with Christ. A true disciple and witness of Him, because we have lived it. Without the sacrifice, there is no growth. I love this lesson. Thank you David and Emily.

Just loving everything this year! Somehow the lessons keep getting better (and we've been with you from the beginning - so I'm not sure how that's possible because they've been amazing from the start!). The board is awesome (we have no issues reading it) and we LOVE the journal. All of your tools are perfection this year! David and Emily, thank you for all you do to help our scripture study be more meaningful. So grateful that you share your many talents with all of us!

Love the fact that you didn’t panic about your child not wanting to go to school that day. I always told my kids if they ever had a day like that to let me know. I would question them some, and one can usually tell if something was due and they didn’t have it ready or if they were really not feeling school that morning. I’d let them stay home and we’d definitely plan something, not just waste the day. Good memories. Ok, now let’s continue with the podcast, which I absolutely love,

I love your podcast. Thank you so much! I tend to listen to it several times a week while I’m working until some thing hits me. I’m not sure if that makes sense but this time, for some reason when you mentioned the lion King, and relating it to Jesus being shown his kingdom, I was thinking how Mufasa said it was everywhere that the light touches. And that is true, right? He is the light so everywhere he touches brings light and is his kingdom. I love that!!

My feedback on the hard copy of “A Companion Journal”- First- I love learning this way and appreciate the information greatly. Feedback on Journal- 1. The different and light tones of the ink are difficult to read. For ease of reading the lettering (type) would be much better if it were black in color on white background. 2. The heading for each week with the gray background and white lettering is OK but the scripture reference is difficult to see. 3. You may want to look at accessibility standards for print materials.

OK, one more thought as I am listening to the podcast again, when Emily was talking about, wanting to serve when she was younger and praying that her challenges would be taken away so she could serve, I think she and all of us that have the same hope and prayer, are answered because we are given those challenges, so like Christ, we can succor those and serve those that have similar issues, he was answering your prayer by letting you know how they feel so you can serve them.

This last segment made me think of our little missionaries- probably because my daughter is doing home MTC right now. They leave everything behind- at a time in life when there is so much opportunity to do anything! I’ve always known it’s a sacrifice but it is hitting a different way today. I hope that I can be strong enough one to day to be as committed and faithful as these 18 and 19 year old disciples of God. ❤

19:07 - 22:29 - " Make it easy for me. Especially if He's the one that asked me to do it! " 🥺💔 God asked me to do something that I absolutely did not want to do! I begged that it wouldn't be His will that I do this. The answer was still, " Beth, I need you to do this." 🙏🏼🤍 This was a good thing, however, I knew if I did what He wanted me to do then I would be faced with an extremely difficult temptation. It was one that I felt I was not strong enough to handle. Sure enough, this is what happened. I was bitter at times, but it was the right decision & I do not regret it! I learned so much from this temptation. Not only that, but I witnessed MIRACLES because of it. And the best part of this awful trial is that I am less judgmental & more compassionate.💗 I wouldn't want to go through it again, but I would never take it back. The Savior was with me the entire time. Even when I failed... & I failed multiple times.🌸 2 Nephi 2 : 11 "For it must needs be, that there is an opposition in all things." 💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚 " I learned who God was in those moments!" -- Emily Belle Freeman🤍

Thank you for these videos each week. My family and I are living in Chennai, India and going to church hasn't been a place where we've been able to feel the Spirit as strongly because of the language barrier. I very much appreciate being able to use this as my own Sunday School study. On another note- I am the same as Emily when it comes to "Happily ever after." What came to me during that comment though is that it's hard to have a happily ever after without first going through the conflict. Just like reading a book, there wouldn't be much of a resolution without the conflict. This reminds me of how important God's plan was for us: good vs. evil, health vs. sickness, etc. It's harder to appreciate the good without experiencing the bad as well. We just have to keep in mind that there is a guarantee of a happily ever after at the end of the Plan of Salvation. What are we willing to do to get there?

Love the overall idea that the weakness led the ways for the miracles to happen. Like the story of Daniel. The king wanted to undo the law he signed, not because he wanted to undo the law, but because it was the only way he could see it possible to save Daniel. However he was stuck, his weakness in being decided to sign it had terrible unforseen consequences. I feel like our weaknesses sometimes get us stuck too. Like the king, sometimes we only see one way out, or can't see how what we want can be possible any other way. But there in lies the chance for the miracle. Because the king was bound to the law and couldn't change, Divine intervention came and saved Daniel's life, giving the king exactly what he hoped for and wanted in a way he couldn't fathom happening. While Christ was in the wilderness, Lucifer tried to play on the weakness, attempting to cause Christ to feel his suffering was in vain. His path for food, glory, power were the only ways, but when humble ourselves, submit to the struggle and go through it, the miracles can then come. All these things showing how phenomenal situations can turn out when Heavenly Father is a part of the process. Even when the end result are worse case scenarios like the death of a loved one, or the death of our Savior, or a life full of struggles or physical suffering, it is always worth going through it with Heavenly Father than at it without Him. I think the Saviors time in the wilderness showed this. Thank you for your enlightenment in these teachings, they are a highlight every week 💗

I loved the sequence David described launching out a little, then more and casting down the next, and then forsaking all. I had thought I hadn't heard or considered before as I listened to Emily and David describe the calling of Peter in Luke 5: Was Christ still in the boat?!? He was in the boat when they launched out a little. It doesn't say they came back to shore and let Christ get out before they launched out to the deep. We'll never actually know if he was there, but I liked the possibility that He was in the boat when the nets began to break and the boats began to sink. And I think He would have been there next to Peter, pulling up the nets and helping. He is in my boat with me when he asks me to do hard things!

Peter, launch out now to the deep. Committed, be all in, what I want to help you to become can’t happen In shallow relationships with partial commitment. Next let down your nets! I love the imagery you taught this Story with, David. Christ was already beginning to teach Simón Peter to have enough trust or faith to fish differently. Later Peter will eat and fish for disciples of Christ in a more inclusive, higher, more holy manner. Well done you two!

I have never thought of it that way before. In The Chosen series, after Peter is called by Jesus, Peter tells his wife that he doesn't know how he'll continue to provide. This is brilliantly juxtaposed with Nicodemus who has a very comfortable life that he doesn't want to leave. Their examples have made me ask myself: "could I just drop everything like that?" But truly, in one way or another, the Lord makes sure that everything we need is "added unto" us when we "seek first the kingdom of God." Perhaps for Peter, that meant a big financial blessing for His family. Thank you for sharing this.

As I listened to the Don’t Miss This podcast today about the temptations of Christ I saw a connection I hadn’t seen or heard of before. During the temptations, Satan tries to convince Jesus to cast Himself down from the temple to prove He is the Son of God when the angels miraculously save him, but Jesus refuses: Matthew 4:6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. 7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. But then shortly after when he is in Nazareth, the people try to cast Him down from the brow of the hill outside of Nazareth to harm Him: Luke 4: 28 And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, 29 And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong. 30 But he passing through the midst of them went his way, We don’t know what happened that He was able to pass through in the midst of them. Emily said a synagogue could hold maybe 80 people. Even if there are just a half dozen men who wanted to harm him and he was alone (and no others are mentioned), it remarkable that He could pass through their midst without some type of heavenly help...seen or unseen. How ever He was able to escape a group of people who were “filled with wrath,” it didn’t touch them that He escaped. They weren’t impressed that perhaps angels had born him up or helped Him. Christ being saved from the angry mob didn’t cause them to believe. It probably just frustrated them and made them more angry. During the temptations, all the podcasters talked about how it would have been a miracle that would have brought others to Christ, but it didn't when He actually received help to escape them.

My wife and I watch this frequently and love most of what comes from this podcast. I wouldn’t usually comment on here because we usually watch on our Roku, but I felt like this one warranted my thoughts. so I’m doing this on another device. When Emily mentioned needing to have someone tell her what to study for the day and both (?) mentioned the idea that it’s not the end of the world if you miss a day because you really feel like you need an extra hour to sleep in because “we believe in eternity”, so we have time. Among Latter-Day Saints, we know that looking for reasons to slack off with critical gospel habits or doing it just “because we are told to” are spiritually deadly attitudes. I would know. I know you’re speaking to a global audience here and are trying to make it palatable to the public but diluting what the attitude of a true disciple of Christ is supposed to be about scripture study is only doing every listener a disservice. No, it’s not the end of the world if you miss one day of course, and needing to be told what to read to stay on track is certainly a good step in the right direction and is definitely better than not studying the scriptures at all (waaaay too many people not doing that), but there are also too many people asking themselves how little they can do and still feel good about their discipleship and goodness as a person. This is an extremely destructive and limiting, even damning attitude to have about Christ and His gospel. Satan isn’t resting, Satan NEVER takes a day off of trying to destroy us, so what excuse could we possibly have to slack even a little bit in our scripture studies? I will say though, thank you for all the good you do, and helping those who are still in the process of learning to love the scriptures and personal study

I am a bit confused. Emily said that those who would read from the Torah were in line to read and what were the odds that when it was time for Jesus to read he would read from the book of Esaias which is found in Luke v. 18 and 19. It says in v.17 that Jesus took the book of Esaias and opened it then HE FOUND THE PLACE where it was written... it wasn't just a chance thing. Jesus found the scriptures. Yes, he has just come from 40 days of fasting and was in tune to KNOW and FIND these scriptures in the Torah for those present to hear it was HE.

Sorry if this has been asked, but you mention that all 4 of Gospel writers write about the story (Jesus in wilderness). I am not a scholar, but does John write about this? Thanks so much, I teach adult SS, and watching/listening to you always helps bring the lesson together for me. Keep it up.

They have actually mentioned this in a previous video! They said “we keep getting comments that we jump on each other‘s sentences, but we don’t mind at all! That’s just how our relationship and teaching style works” It was actually David who said it, so, if it doesn’t bother, David, it shouldn’t bother us!

Btw, John doesn’t include the temptations in the wilderness... You said they all include it. However, John's gospel does include people asking Him to do those same three things (or echoes of these things): bread John 6:26, 31; saving himself John 2:18; kingdoms John 6:15.

You mentioned that Christ reads from the Torah which is the first five books of Moses. But, isn’t the verse Jesus read (Luke 4:17) in Isaiah 61, which is not in the Torah but the Nevi’im? I guess Im just confused if they read from the whole TNK back then or if that verse is found somewhere in the Torah.

A reading from the Pentateuch would have occurred first , then a reading from a scroll of one of the prophets. This is the one He was handed. See Cambridge College commentary for a better explanation. This was also possibly done on the Day of Atonement, which gives the event added significance. 😊

Does anyone else have any other suggestions, please!?

My understanding is that there was no specific reference to a MALE God's voice in the original writing. Considering that the dove is also a symbol for Divine Feminine, what if the voice was actually Heavenly Mother? That the patriarchal mindset did its work over the years and decided it was Heavenly Father, no questions asked? She shows up in scripture a ton more than anyone seems to want to acknowledge. Hope that changes soon.

Maybe this is just too obvious. Peters invite to follow Christ and his experience of leaving his nets behind is similar to our apostles today, and leaving their business/practices behind (lawyers, doctors, teachers, pilots etc.).

I love your lessons but this is the 1st time a lesson rubbed me the wrong way. I feel like your characterization of Peter’s experience with Jesus when he let down his net was treated a bit flippant. No where is Peters business as a fisherman inferred. It seems more to me that as you said, Christ first begins teaching which I am sure Peter was listening to. It would seem more probable that after that at Christ’s request to go out deeper, Peter was inclined to do so based on what he had just heard. Then it says even after reflecting on the reasons why not to, Peter says, nevertheless, and let’s down the net. I’m sure he was in fact astonished but not at the thought of riches or business building but at the miracle he just witnessed. It says he forsook ALL and Straightway! So immediately Peter followed. I don’t think there was ever a moment when he was thinking of the dollars. Just my opinion. Thanks

Reading the scriptures should be fun as well as instructive and spiritual. I had a coworker say to me once that he wished the scriptures read like a Clive Cussler novel. I thought a lot about that and tried to read the scriptures to my children with lots of inflection and expression. No one likes some one droning on. The enthusiasm for the scriptures that comes from calling the scriptures fun or sweet is not only okay but something to strive for. I listened to a New Testament scholar who also spoke of Peter’s initial reticence when asked to lower his nets and that he did question the Savior briefly. It’s okay to ask questions. This dispensation started because a young boy had questions about his standing with God and about which Church to join and aren’t we all glad he did. Peter’s faith most likely grew faster because he did have questions and asked. It’s ok to put ourselves into the scriptures and try to feel what they were feeling and experiencing. It helps us understand and grow to love these characters and liken the scriptures unto ourselves.
@maryellennagel1534
@maryellennagel1534 Жыл бұрын
I think you have all missed my point. I wasn’t complaining on the ‘fun’ aspect of these lessons, as this is why I listen in the first place. I was merely pointing out that attach any business motive on the part of Peter does him a great disservice. His humility and faith are immediate. I just don’t think any part of his story leans to the temporal side as was alluded to in the lesson presented.
